A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste!
My favorite song to play at church is a tossup between Blessed Be your Name and Salvation Is Here. My current setup is my OLP MusicMan 5 through the last bass players old Yamaha combo. I'm looking to fix my other OLP 5 and work as much as possible to get better gear because I want to have the best gear when I play for God.
OH... and I have been playing through my Ashdown Electric Blue 180-15" Combo for the past few months... THis week the ran me from the amps DI into the house system, and I used my amp as monitor... I put the combo on top of the big subwoofer the church has... Man, you should here me rumble now!... the sound guy likes lotsa bass...

I play every Saturday night at Sonrise Community Church in Santee, CA and sub 2-3 times per month at other churches. No band right now as the blues band I was in imploded. I'm holding off as work is busy, I'm working on another Master's, and I want more time with my family.... so something had to give. TV is already gone, leisure reading is reduced significantly......
Anyway, my wife is a great support and encourages me in music. She's bought or paid part of several of my basses and is supportive of my irregular schedule.
The fun part of subbing for me is the last minute calls - the best one was for a Saturday night service that started at 5. I was home alone with my 3 year old and got a call 26 minutes before the service started - for a church 10 minutes away! I got there, got Bobby into child care, and was on stage 2 minutes before the service started!
At my church I have to play with the combo provided - a GK 2x10 combo with the 700rb head. I use it as a monitor and most of the sound comes from the PA, which works well as the sanctuary seats 1,200. When I sub I have been using an Aguilar AG-500 with either 2 GS112's or an Accugroove Whappo Jr. I just replaced the AG-500 with a GenzBenz GBE1200 and will try it out this weekend.
Anyway - favorite song....

The Praise band is what started me playing again. "Blessed Be The Name" is fun. "Let Creation Sing is fun to, I use an octave pedal and the sound guys pump me up. The sounds like bass which is just fine with me.
I switched to a fiver several months back which has been pretty helpful. The music director is pretty open and like to experiment with different songs. Some make it to service some don't.

I used to play in a Praise & Worship Band. I actually replaced my Uncle when he moved to Tennessee. I had no idea he was playing in it [or else i would have showed up to see him play].
It was a blast. It was a nice setup-playing fun music with people that i got along well with. I was also the youngest member of the group. One of the vocalists plus the lead guitarist were the parents of a former girlfriend of mine, and then the rest of the group were about the same age minus the music director-he was in his mid 20s [i was late teens at the time].
Gear wise? They provided an Eden 2X10+head. That was niiiice. Basses-i typically played my StingRay5 except for the 1 time they had me bring in my DB.
Fav tunes? I enjoyed right about all of em, but i honestly forget what ones were my favorites. It's been 2+ years since i played with them.
I really enjoyed the setup & arrangements we had. I know this could easily be a hot button topic for this thread, but the part that i liked the most about it was despite how i wasn't a member of the church [United Methodist Church-i was/am agnostic] they treated me as if i was "one of them". I looked at it as an experience to see how what i believe compared to what they believe and to further continue my search for what i truly believe if that makes sense at all. No one ever pressured me to believe as they did, yet no one ever looked down upon the fact that at least, religiously, i considered it a learning environment vs. a worship environment.

GREAT list!!!! we do alot of those as well.....Hard to pick out favorites from a list like that!
It would be interesting to compare how we play the "same song".....I bet none of us do it "the same".....we often vary tempo and key to allow the congregation to join in (often playing a song a little slower than recorded)....also, I am sure we all have favorite "riffs" we fit into certain songs that give them that "special touch".....maybe if we could attach sound files we could do that......

Hey, great to have found this thread. Haven't read all the posts yet, but thought I'd say hi from New Zealand. I'm worship leader and sometime bass player in a small suburban Presbyterian church. Bass is my main instrument, but as we have only a small music team I mostly find myself playing keys or acoustic guitar. Especially so since we haven't had a drummer for some time, so I need to use keys or guitar to lock in the groove (Any drummers out there want to move to New Zealand?). Anybody else had similar experiences with small bands, no drummer ... ?

The church that I just came from, I played there for almost 10 years, and we only had a drummer about a year of that. Fortunately, we had a couple of really good pianists. When they were playing, it was easy for me to lock in and have freedom to go off at least a couple of times on each song.
We had another pianist who wasn't rock solid, and when I played with him, I had to keep a solid groove, or he would wander off into a totally different tempo.
My dad passed away last weekend. If you guys could lift my mom up in prayer I would greatly appreciate it. They would have been married 65 years next April.
