Worship Bassists Unite

Hi all,

im so happy to see so many of us using this forum as a place for prayer and encouragement!

Its awesome!

Please pray for me as tonight is the first meeting of a new band im setting up in Carlisle - Uk - near scotland!

We are from one church and we all have/are worship leaders - which is crazy - we are planning to write a crunchiy/rock/grunge worship set over the next few months and also serve our church as one of the worship teams

there are 4 of us (keyboard/cello, drums, guitar and of course Bass!

Im well excited and id appreciate prayer for unity with each other and growth in our Love to worship jesus!

I cant wait!

Think we are going for "The Rising Banner" as a name but its still early days in taht department

love you all, keep it low for the king of kings - :bassist:

Ok we had the first practice last night and it was amazing

we already have the basics for 6 songs laid down and we have a sound like

muse/hillsong/black rebel motorcycle club/starfield/planetshakers

beware world cause we are gonna bring a fusion of grunge and worship to Cumbria!

we will record an ep in december foryou all to hear!

keep praying cause our city needs Jesus!

Hey everyone, I'd like to ask for some prayer and support. Tomorrow is our church's "Ignite" service, a monthly worship event geared toward college students (similar to 7:22 at North Point Church). I've been battling a mild case of tendonitis in my left index finger over the last week and a half, but it's getting better. I feel about 80% right now. I made it through Sunday morning okay, but the band is hoping that I'll be ready for tomorrow night. I want to play my very best, but I know my limits and will not hurt myself. Thanks for the support, guys! I'll be sure to give you all a report of how the night went.

A very interesting thread, and I'm genuinely amazed at the strength of the worship / music movement in the USA.

There simply is no equivalent in UK. Yes, of course there are guys who play in churches but it's a very minor affair compared to what happens across the pond. :D

Perhaps the slant is that there is much less emphasis placed on religious matters here (though not speaking for every religion of course). I think it's probably true to say that younger people just dont get involved in worship / church.

Fantastic news. At 47 I am getting my share of "hand pains" lately my self, probably exacerbated from working on the computer all day... Advil and keeping well hydrated is key.

I do find the wider neck of my P basses less promoting to sometime discomfort that I expereince with my thinner J neck though.

As an aside, we are playing "Not To Us" this Friday in our singles ministry. Love that Song, but most importantly its message...

I've been playing with the church's alternate service for a year and a half. We recently decided to go on hiatus while we build up the other parts of the ministry. Our leader went on to school and college ministry, so the burden of planning the service was taking away from building the community and planning outreach events. When the new pastor is hired (probably January) we will be able to do more.

A talented musician joined our church recently, and the head pastor is looking to restart the alternative service. I have yet to meet the new guy, but I've heard he was part of some big productions and will be able to design and direct our new service. I'm a little concerned since I haven't met him, and we had planned to wait for the new pastor to restart this aspect of our ministry. However, I'm excited to play my bass for worship again.

My favorite song to play is 'Marvelous Light.' Our group tends to sound like a rock concert, with feedback and solos. It really sets the mood for excitement and joy.

Goodness, what a thread! And I'm late again. :D I've been blessed to be able to praise Him with my bass for five years now. This summer something new developed. I know it sounds odd, but I am now involved with a Christian blues band. Blues music that proclaims the word of God and his love for us. We played a festival called "United We Sing" on the south lawn of the capitol. We only had four songs ready, but next year we'll have more. It would have been much more enjoyable if I hadn't been suffering through pneumonia at the time. I didn't have the energy after we got off stage to stay long enough to check out ApologetiX. A couple of their members did compliment my playing when we were done. That was nice to hear. I learned that Missouri and Alaska are the only two states in the union that allow Christian assembly on the capitol grounds. We're more blessed than I knew! Just wanted to share this with my brothers.

Exaltbass - THANK YOU for the heads-up on the "Grooving for Heaven" DVD series. This sounds like just the workout I need!

Equipment? I usually take a five string into the sanctuary (Kinal or Dingwall) and a four-string to play those blues (LeCompte CB-SC or Lakland hollowbody). I rely on Thunderfunk and Accugroove for amplification.

Funny... the drummer and guitarist in my newly formedband are just coming off of a U2 project at a church (which is why we have only been rehearsing every couple weeks, along with my finishing my Masters--- DONE THIS SUNDAY!)... I really only know u2's "pop"ier stuff... did not know about the more spiritual stuff...

While our band is doing some classic covers (Summertime Blues, Brown Eyed Girl, Message in a Bottle, etc...), and some CHristian covers, we are also working on original stuff, which has thus far been all Christian oriented... My first original (kinda proud of it) is based on parts of the 103rd Psalm and is a real "praise n worship" style hand clapper... I never woulda saw me writing a praise chorus thing, but that one couldn'ta been anything else... I got some other stuff bouncing in my skull, but I gotta wait til after I finish the last Master's course this Sunday... the drummer came up with a kinda rock thing that is really growing on me...

I can't wait to start gigging...

WoW ! I can't believe I missed this thread , I'm retired from professional Southern Gospel music of 25 years, for the last 10 years I've been playing for praise & worship at my church which is Believers Full Gospel just South of Huntsville Alabama, my favorites are too many to list , My rig is a Fender P and a Fender Jaz , a Pevey TNT 160 and a Harke 140.

Looks like I'm late too. I play at my church, Sagemont Church. We've got a bunch of bass players, but gladly I'm on the 'B' team so I play quite often. I was playing a lot of the contempory services, but they moved it into another worship hall and the worship leader for that service is using his own band now. I now play in the "blended" services, which is contempory stuff and modern arrangements of hymns with a big chior and orchestra. I play LeComptes for the most part. On occassion I like to "test" customers basses so pretty much I every time I play it's something different. :hiding: Not every bass I build makes it though. Mostly I play inventory stuff until I sell it. For some reason the trombone players are really into my basses as well as the precussionists.

Well just a little update.....
I've been rehearsing with the praise team for about 2 1/2 months now.
Things have been really good,it's been more good times than bad ones.
I've been learning some of these songs and finally this Sun. would be the first time
i'll be playing"onstage".So i would aprecciate if guys keep me on your prayers so everything goes good this Sun.Thx.

I play at 2 churches actually. I play at my church on Sunday morning and then I head over to a larger church and play at their Spanish service at 3 o'clock.

As far as my favorite song, I like Lord of the Harvest by Fred Hammond, I think, because of the funky slap lines I put put in there. Great song to get the congregation moving.

I play 2 basses at church. I use my Lakland for some of the faster, funkier songs and then switch to my modded Tobias for the slower stuff because of the Bartolini low end growl I can get with the quad coil pups in there. I plug into a GK 700 rbII that pushes an Avatar B212 and a Tubeworks 410. My rack also includes a BBE Sonic Maximizer and an Alesis compressor with a Sabian tuner.

I think that being a worship bassist has alowed me to grow spiritually stronger than being the guitarist I was before I became the bassist. Being a bassist is not a show boat instrument, especially in church. It's a very necessary instrument but to be honest, no one notices the bassist until he's gone. When you're there no one knows you are but when you're not, everyone notices. That's kind of how I see the Lord moving me. He wants me to make an impact in the church but not to be noticed. He's the one that gets the glory and I'm the one that's allowing that to happen by being faithful to my ministry. I am very necessary to my church as long as I'm fitting in my role.
