Worship Bassists Unite

While we're on the subject of Jesus and Christmas, did anyone do anything performance-wise for Christmas? At our Church we gave a half-hour performance before the 4PM Christmas Vigil Mass yesterday. We had trumpets, woodwinds, a baritone trombone (an impressive instrument!), piano, three acoustic guitars, bass (me!) and drums, singers, and a synthesizer. Pretty heavy fare for a Catholic Church! We played the standards - Silent Night, Joy To The World, etc. - and some songs I'd never heard of before. But we sounded and played great, the Spirit was definitely with us and in us. Then we did the Mass music, and I don't think we ever sounded tighter. When you're in the Lord's House, you better play your best! So all in all a wonderful, inspiring experience for me and all my fellow bandmates. :)

So with that a very Merry Christmas to all of you here at TalkBass.

We played a Family Service at 4:00p.m. yesterday that featured several childrens ensembles... pre-K, 1st-2nd graders, 10 and 12 year olds. We supported a couple of them and did several songs with just the band.

Something about CHILDEREN and CHRIST-mass that reaches to ones Soul...for in the grand scheme of things we are ALL CHILDREN of Our LORD, OUR Heavenly Father who +2000 years ago sent us The Greatest Gift of ALL, the Gift of Salvation through His SON, Our King, Jesus Christ, Lord of Lords!

Wishing all of my fellow BELIEVING TBer's a closer releationship with Jesus Christ this coming year, may you all grow in your FAITH and HIS Blessings be with you. Commit to regular study of HIS word and participation in small study groups with other fellow believers.

And to all those not in the safety of His Flock, I pray that we all pray for warming of your Hearts to HIS Holy Spirit and recongnition and acceptance of Jesus Christ as your Personal Savior and the Way to the Life Eternal.

We had 12 services over three days (2, 6 & 4)at our "main" campus, but a total of 27 at all four campsus- Reached about 32,000 people.
Almost every service was "sold out" (tickets were free, but had to be reserved ahead of time).

Christmas morning service... 10:30 am... we did the following set (with lessons and readings in between)

We did 2 Christmas Eve services had over 500 in each, which is our best attendance yet.

We did 7 songs 5 congregational carols and 2 special music. We did a Third Day cover of O Come All Ye Faithful, a couple Country type carols and rocked out on We Three Kings and Angles We Have Heard On High.

This is always a good outreach for us (we get a lot of twice a year folks) and non church goers.

I did two christmas services, one a few weeks ago. That was our christmas brunch which is a big outreach for us, more than doubles our size and we have to rent a big hall for it. It is a blast. Then we did a small christmas eve service. Nothing much special for music, just the usuals. For next year I want to put together something much more interesting, there are a few brass players and vocal soloists that don't play with us that I would like to get involved and I have some ideas for arrangements of songs. But the trouble is getting people together to practice.

For the last few years we have put on a Christmas Concert for the community. I bring in my band and we are essentially the "house band" for a number of guest vocalists. Music is a mix of traditional and secular. It is not designed as a service but just a fun time for all who wish to come. It's goals are to show the community that christians can have fun, allow
an opportunity for people to invite someone who otherwise might not go to church, and no one gets away without hearing the reason for the season.

I got the chance to be part of a 16-voice men's chorale group on Sunday night. We sang several acapella numbers and we just had a great service. Music was a bit more "high-church" than usual for our congregation, but it was a meaningful service with communion after the music.

Be a while before I can hope to play in a service like that, but I got to make a joyful noise while singing bass anyway.
