I was asked to audition for a nu-metal band a few years back and brought my Rob Allen. Definitely didn't sit well in that mix. I mostly did it to try that out and prove it for myself.

I think the usual tones of metal tend to remove a lot of fretlessness from fretless basses in the mix.

Worst bass for metal - I've never been able to get a decent sound out of a hollow body and I'm sure an upright wouldn't make the Top 10 Best Metal Basses list.

This is kind of a non-topic. If you know what you are doing you can make just about anything work in any situation. I saw a metal band once where the guy was playing an upright and he seriously rocked it all the way around, even tone wise. No one ever became a ground breaker without breaking some rules.

I dunno. I think it's just having a sense of humor.

I play in a black metal band and a doom metal band. Both have sometimes speculated about getting the Hello Kitty guitar, getting better parts put on it, and rocking the crap out of it. Because it would be hilarious.

A true kindred spirit! Just imagine going out on stage looking like Abbath and rocking one of those things!

BTW did your name come from a Clive Barker novel?

I read all this topic's posts up to now. I knew what would happen when I read the first post. A few people list some instruments which they believe would not work, and others post evidence to the contrary, supporting the said instruments. Just an observation.

even Paul himself thought they sucked. he just got one from Stuart and ran with it, and it became a part of his look so he played the thing live, but recorded with a ric from about Paperback writer and on.
