apparently the epiphone birdies are now made with alder bodies with removable maple necks. i like the body design and headstock shape. might get one as a project. toss out the crappy electronics, get busy with wood fillers and a router, and get some good electronics in there. t-bird pups are unbarable

Every Gibson Bass I have owned (Ripper, Grabber) and played (T-Bird and SG) have been quite lackluster. The Ripper had a horrible honk, the Grabber's pickup was downright stupid.
The T-Bird while being a great bass is just way too overpriced to warrant a $1700 price tag. For that much I could get a used Sadowsky Metro.
The SG was just very cheap feeling and sounding.

Rant over

I have to disagree with you here. I have an SG Supreme Reissue and it's a killer bass. I have the flame maple top one, which adds a bit of brightness to the sound over the regular one. But the sound is killer.

I agree with you that they are way overpriced though.

+1 Just came back from a recording session with the SG Supreme - everyone agreed it was an awesome-sounding bass and I didn't get to touch any other basses the rest of the session.

I 'spose one could make a case for the mahogany SG reissue being overrated - but this Maple top SG ... its the s#$t.

800$ being a price that I consider that all basses should be at least decent. But, we all know that this isn't the case really.

Post the bass you think is the worst you played in that price range and please do not flame others for their opinions being different than yours.

My vote goes for the Gibson thunderbird

I haven't tried the tbird but as i read from (a late issue of a magazine) the bassist of the band darkness (i don't remember his name), said that he haven't heared a tbird that doesn't sound terrible. I can't confirm but since you said this may be there is some truth to it.
