Worst basss over 800$

The ones I've played had tone for days. The body style just wasn't my brand of vodka. As for worst basses, one man's Thunderbird is another man's Sadowsky. I wouldn't say that a bass is horrible because it didn't fit me. I think it's all subjective. From my personal experience, it was a new Tobias Growler, but it wasn't because of the bass per se. This was during a period where the Gibson factory in Arkansas was mailing it in, and someone at the factory who worked on the Tobias line, told me to stay away. He and about 4 other people actually quit.

Anyone that's judging a T-bird's tone on plugging in to an amp at a shop is doing the bass and themselves a disservice. They rock like hell through an SVT, and can add an interesting sound to a rock band. The old non-rev ones are absolutely killer. Listen to Mike watt and tell me they don't sound good. Like many instruments they have to be approached for what they are and can do instead of on how they compare to the current conception of what a good bass is. As to being overpriced, I agree 100%. Gibson is an infuriating company in so many ways for a bass player.

Anyway, this thread is designed to piss off as many people as possible.

Fenders MIA Jazzes (new), sorry, but all of the ones I've played have disappointed me. Also, IMHO, having to try several before finding one that's "good"... that just means its crap with some exceptions.

exactly...i went to the shop back in august, with full intentions of picking up an MIA jazz...walked out with a Squier VM Jazz because it sounds, plays, and (to me) looks better than all the MIA Jazzes they had (about 12)

Lifeless and dull tone...no matter what you do with it...bleh =p

I can't tell what the brand says on the headstock (my monitor's a bit dark, and needs replacing). What is it?

EDIT: I checked MF and found out it's a Laguna Ocean. Never heard of it, but there's no reason it shouldn't be able to sound fine. It's just a 5-piece neck-thru with the same pups that come in the Lakland 55-01. Maybe it's the "soft" maple wings, I don't know.

Tobias Renegade - lackluster sound

I had one, and while it played well and had a balanced B string, I wasn't awed by the tone. I probably should have changed out the pups and pre instead of flipping it.

I hated the Bart MK1's in my 55-01. Fortunately the Nordstrand Dual Coils pretty much drop right in. I'm still not happy with the Bart/Lakland NTMB-L (yes, the previous owner had it upgraded) that's in there, but it's much better now. $300 for the pair was an expensive gamble though. The 55-01 fits me so well that I had to take the chance.

KO

I don't know that Nordstrand Dual Coils are a gamble at all.

But I have to wonder if the guy I was quoting has tried to do anything to that Laguna. He said, "no matter what you do to it", but I just don't see how a pup upgrade wouldn't have made that bass at least decent. Maybe he has a bias against neck-thru instruments.

True story- I had a set of Roscoe Beck V pups that I bought off eBay with the intent of getting a 55-01 and routing for them. Never got the bass, and sold the pups. That would have been the coolest fiver ever.

NOT getting the Spector and MTD posts. I love that everything's subjective, but man. What do you guys play anyway?

Also, having a bad experience with a bass could be due to a million factors: strings, action, amp/cab preference... or just bad QC, but I'm not sure that's possible with either of those companies.

I'm sorry, but the MTD Z series don't FEEL nor sound better then a Squire modified jazz.

Sure they're nice basses, but not $800 nice. Maybe $400 nice, but definitely not $800 nice. I'm pretty positive that $500 of that price is just for the name "MTD". Not to mention 80% of the owners drop even more money in modding them, while a Quire modified jazz with the stock pre will BLOW them away even after a pre-amp swap.

Gibson Thunderbird. Lovely to look at though.
Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass (the one with binding). I didn't like the feel of it.
I also played an awful Stingray the other day but that was down to an awful setup at Dawsons.

My bad: I have not played a Z. Just wildly impressed with my Kingston Artist, and a few Grendels I've played.

Fodera Monarch, Victor Wooten, and Monarch 5. While The Monarch is the greatest Venture Bros. character, Fodera's Monarch is not the greatest bass.

I'm also not cool with the Gibson Thunderbird bass. I had fun, fun, fun WHEN Daddy took the T-Bird away. Interesting...

I also am not a huge Ibanez bass fan, despite the fact they're super commonplace in Madison.

What do you not like about the Monarch? I am interested as I have one and love it. Cheers.
