The first active made in the U.S. Jazz Bass Deluxe models from Fender back in
96 get my vote. Horrible big slug four pole piece pickups wired in a less than stellar split pickup
humbucker arrangement all crammed into a J-bass single coil housing. Add in the
mediocre sounding preamp, the poorly cut nut,and other no attention to detail that
Fender displayed with the one I bought; I think it was a crime for them to post a
$1295 price tag in 96 dollars for that awful attempt at updating the Jazz Bass.

I sold that bass after a few years and bought a Geddy Lee J-Bass. Yes the Geddy
as a passive clone of a 72 J-Bass is superior to that wretched U.S. Jazz Bass
Deluxe I once owned.

OUCH! That Smarts!! :bawl:

My Warwick Corvette Standard 4 string passive bubinga bass. Man I got ripped off! I really liked this bass when I first got it but since I've grown in bass knowledge I realize how hard it is to play it compared to my other basses and how limited it is in a live setting.

Wait! there are basses out there over $800?

People all like things for different reasons, and I think price plays less a role as "feel" and sound of the bass (although I am sure some one has probably already said that).

I always wanted to love a Ric 4003, tried to play one an couldn't. It did not fit my playing ability, but I still love the sound, and it is obvious that many other like the sound and feel.

I used to own a Guild Starfire Reissue bass. Compared to the Korean DeArmond line, it sounded and played worse. The DeArmond ate it alive.

The Guild looked nicer and sounded better acoustically. But so what.

Guild: 1500.00 US.
DeArmond: 400.00 US.

I read a study that was done on wine... more expensive wine tasted better. As long as the subject knew the wine was expensive before drinking it. I have two favorite basses. One cost me about 1,500 and the other one cost me 230.00. You just never know...

For The user DEAN T yes we know you have an SG bass damn thats all you ever talk about is your SG supreme bass, they are over priced and the supreme bass's look like sh*t and you can get them just as cheap if not cheaper then the standard sg because no one likes the colour so instead of disagreeing with everyone when they have something to say about the sg stop telling us that you own ,instead explain why you disagree with the comment

I must be fair and say that Fender later refined and fixed
a lot of the problems with the MIA Jazz Bass Deluxes later on.
I wasn't too impressed with my 96 which was being touted
as a new best of the breed version back then.

I can't tell what the brand says on the headstock (my monitor's a bit dark, and needs replacing). What is it?

EDIT: I checked MF and found out it's a Laguna Ocean. Never heard of it, but there's no reason it shouldn't be able to sound fine. It's just a 5-piece neck-thru with the same pups that come in the Lakland 55-01. Maybe it's the "soft" maple wings, I don't know.

Perhaps its the preamp...but I have gotten a recent distaste for active stuff. Just, sounds bland to me...idk, just my opinion and how my ears hear stuff =/

I don't know that Nordstrand Dual Coils are a gamble at all. .

I'd never heard them and I still had to choose whether I was going for "wound for parallel" or "wound for series". Put down your money and no backs!

I chose the "wound for parallel" because I figured they'd be hotter and I'm ultimately going to be passive with the bass. For switching, it's going to be "single/parallel/single with bass boost" ala G&L L-1000. "Single with bass boost" runs series with a cap over one of the coils so the low end is series (with all that bass), but the high end is single coil. Should be fun. I've got the schems, I've just got to order the parts.

True story- I had a set of Roscoe Beck V pups that I bought off eBay with the intent of getting a 55-01 and routing for them. Never got the bass, and sold the pups. That would have been the coolest fiver ever.

I'm hoping to have essentially what you're describing. A few more coil switching options and passive treble and bass roll-offs (again, ala G&L L-1000), but we're in the same ballpark.

KO

For the most part it seems that the market demands a preamp in a bass unless you're going for a retro vibe. It's bad for me because, like you, I generally don't want a preamp in a bass.

If I _DID_ want a preamp, it would have zero gain and no EQ shaping, just buffer it for impedence matching (longer cable lengths) and get out of the way. I've got all the EQing I need on my amp, thanks.

Oh, and I think it was EBS that put phantom power in their amps: Use a TRS cable and the battery isn't powering the preamp any more. Genius! Really - what a great idea!

For those people hating on gibson. I wouldnt say thyere bad bass's thyere different. Gibson are for people who want a unique bass, In my opinion ive played alot of fenders and i own one to me theyre pretty basic and and even a little boring, there is nothing unique about fenders, with Ricks you got the twang sound , Gibson is a more deeper sound, the ernie musicman have a great sound but, fenders they great all around bass' but very basic and plain

ive got a lot of votes here..

definately the bongo and the tbird are a given..

another huge ripoff is warwick. granted once in a while youll find one thatll sound killer, but gennerally they sound like an active fender with the battery starting to go dead..(i was convinced all the warwicks in guitar center had battery issues..tested them all..they were fine =/)

gibson makes great guitars but..those 4 string guitars theyre trying to pass off as basses really arent so nice..

billy sheehan attitude, not so hott either..

carvin basses are built really well but their electronics..hmm..need some work, lets say.

but, my number one vote has to be zon..every one ive tried or heard has sounded like some kind of piezo pickup gone wrong.

all of the above my $400 '06 MIM jazz will take out any day..

I'm sorry, but the MTD Z series don't FEEL nor sound better then a Squire modified jazz.

Sure they're nice basses, but not $800 nice. Maybe $400 nice, but definitely not $800 nice. I'm pretty positive that $500 of that price is just for the name "MTD". Not to mention 80% of the owners drop even more money in modding them, while a Quire modified jazz with the stock pre will BLOW them away even after a pre-amp swap.

I understand about Z-series. Too much mid range sound for me when I heard them. I heard the Kingston Artist and they sound much better in my opinion. Got a old Kingston 5 w/ passive electronic and I like this more than other MTD.

My Bongos eat MIM Jazz basses as snacks.

You know, you're pretty new here to be going negative so early.

I'm just sayin'.
