Would you date someone with HIV?

An active IV drug abuser makes a bad partner.

So does someone with HIV, as bad as that sounds to say. They are not physically healthy, or at least some point won't be and to get involved means to watch the person that you care about succumb to disease and possibly go along with them. So, if you're talking about a "good" or "bad" partner, just in black and white terms like that, someone with HIV would fall into the latter camp, imo. I know I wouldn't have the fortitude to willingly get involved with someone I knew had HIV.

Just curious, why would that matter? Getting it via blood transfusion is rare these days. Accidental contact with contaminated blood? Once you have it, that's it. Why, would the initial circumstances matter?

Again, I'm just curious. To me, how they got it doesn't change that they have it and the very real risk you'd be exposing yourself to. All just my opinion.

I'd want to know if it was a one night stand, a history of drug use, promiscuity, or something else.

Married here, so it's no question for me personally. . . . But I am shocked that some would even consider it. And offended that anyone with HIV would consider becoming sexually involved with/getting married to someone uninfected.

It would take an intense foundation to deal with the realities of an HIV relationship. I could understand if there were some history with the person (ie. long lost love comes back into your life), but to initiate the relationship knowingly seems like a stretch... Sadly, some circumstances remove certain kinds of companionship from one's future. But maybe they will hit the jackpot on someone that is supernaturally compassionate and selfless...

The hard part is that, if I were in the HIV shoes, I would probably not want someone to become attached in that way for both of our sakes. Selfishness, insecurity, fear, doubt, worry... not a great combo for any healthy relationship.

If you met someone really liked and would want to date, would their HIV positive status be a deal breaker for you? Man is this a tough call, I might proceed but with extreme caution.
At that stage (just met them and want to date them), no, it wouldn't be a deal breaker at all. There's no reason we couldn't go out and have some fun together.

If we really hit it off and we were starting to get serious, then I think at some point both of us should meet with a doctor and talk about the situation. How advanced is the disease? Is treatment working? What kind of sexual activity do we like, and can it be done safely?

By way of background, I had a good friend back in the 90s who was HIV+ (he was a hemophiliac and got it from contaminated clotting factor). He met a nice woman, fell in love and got married. He died a few years later, but she never got infected, and as far as I know doesn't have any regrets. So it can work. The future is uncertain, but that's true for all of us.
