Wow

The woman I spoke with was actually pretty rude. I won't be doing business with them in the future.

I've a feeling lots of people are arguing with them and giving them a lot of crap about this. I know I gave my best shot at having them honor the $16 price. I'm sure there are others who did the same without being as nice about it as I was.

I've spent over $10,000 at American Musical and I continue to use them because of all the online companies they've actually treated me with the most respect, and alsways took care of things immediately. Can't tell you how many times I've ordered something and receiived it the next day. When I order from musiciansfriend my order sometimes doesn't go out until 2 days later. :/ I've also never had any problems whatsoever, and their easy pay plan actually helped me build some credit.

Ya might be making a bad choice just based on one persons difficult day, and ya know what... if they offer something for $20 less than another place, you'll order again from them anyhow. :)

I had a lady too...but i must have talked to them when they were playing nice. One of the best people service I've had was with sweetwater. They call you personally to see if you got your item and call when there are coupons and stuff like that. Well, they did with me. I haven't ordered from them in a while. AMS does always ship out pretty quick and so does music123. MF takes a little bit. But they are all still the same evil music companies who take our money for our GAS!

It's dark, the phone is ringing, which wakes me out of my sleep. A no-glasses glance at the clock reads 4:30 AM. I jump up and go for the phone with the "good" battery; a call at this hour must mean an emergeny...

Hello

"Hi! This is American Musical Supply calling..." she says.

At 4:30 in the morning! (I cut her off)

"Oh," she says, "I forgot about the time zone difference."

We stay on the phone just long enough to cancel the order. On the way back to bed, I realize the clock actually reads 6:30, not 4:30.

Still too early!

So here's my dilemma now. There's an (un)ethical component to this, so just know that I'm aware of that, and am already weighing that in my decision.

The speakers are scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Paypal still has not moved the transaction past "pending", for the original $40 amount. No money at all has been deducted from my Paypal or bank accounts. The page on the Paypal website that shows their phone number is mysteriously missing :), so I can't call them; I emailed though, and insisted that the original $40 amount I authorized is the only amount they should pay out.

So the morally right thing to do is refuse the shipment of speakers when they arrive, and then wait for AMS and Paypal to sort things out, hoping that no money gets frozen or deducted in the process.

The wrong (yet very tempting) thing to do would be to accept the delivery, and then ride Paypal like they were a bucking bronco, insisting that I am only paying the originally-authorized amount, and then hoping that AMS decides it would be more expensive to pursue the matter than to just write off the loss. :)

The thing that makes me willing to consider the unethical option is that this all came about due to their own mistake. Not a solid argument, to be sure, but there it is.

Whattaya think?

When I tried that with a Woodwind&Brasswind super-cheap Stargazer sold through Amazon, they sent me a case. Up until it was shipped, their emails and order status showed it as a bass, but once shipped it magically changed into a case. I called, and once I got through the rep was great about intercepting the shipment at the depot and rerouting it back to them. It took 4 months to get my money back, and I had harass them regularly about it.

i think it's not worth the hassle. i'd just refuse the package.

The only thing AMS has going for them is that they actually ship stuff in a timely manner. They're a dead loss in every other way.

They lie about price matching (you may remember my experience there) they ship damaged goods as A-stock and their "sale" prices are rarely -- as in almost never -- any good compared to those of MF or even SamAsh.Com.

Their ungracious handling of this screw-up -- which was 100% their own fault and nobody else's -- is just the final nail in the coffin for me. Every dealing I've had with them has been unpleasant and unsatisfactory, and on sketchy goods I wish I hadn't bought. :hmm:

Really a shame, too, as their warehouse is about eighty miles from me and I receive orders from them the next day. I've tried to like AMS and do business with them, but it just hasn't worked out.

btw... I bought a guitar case from ams two months ago w/pp and in pp status it showed pending for a whole month after I got the case. They didn't remove money from my bank for a whole month after I had case and thats because it took a week UPS shipping time to get it. So basically one month and one week after initial purchase.

Bong, I say you hold speakers and keep em boxed til matters are resolved. If they don't pursue matter, then game on for you, and if they do, then you can ship back. Either way, they can't take money from you, just "politely" ask for payment. I'm wondering what price your invoice is gonna show.

Having owned a mail order business, refusing the shipment will eventualy get it sent to the return goods counter and will really confuse the issue.
My advice would be to accept the shipment, and if you have moral issues, don't open it until the matter is resolved.
One could make a case that while they did make the offer, many here did make the purchase under the assumption that they were taking advantage of a vendor's mistake.
Not illegal but also not the most rightous thing to do.
It will be interesting to see how their legal department resolves this.

I don't think it is unethical to keep the speakers. In this day and age there are all kinds of deals to be had....who is to say that this wasn't another one? It isn't your fault that they listed it wrong, shipped them to you without further authorization of additional payment.

Your order might be the only order that slipped through the cracks.

The fact is that they CANNOT take more money out of your paypal account. If you have an email confirming purchase and it shows the $16.95 on there, that is all you have to have with paypal.

It is the right thing to do? Depends on which side of the transaction you are on...I can see their point, but I can see your point. Fact is that if you are selling something, it is YOUR responsibility to ensure all the prices/details/etc are correct before pushing the LIST button.

Good luck!! Let us know what you decide to do.

actually i just got an email saying mines is on its way to me... i paid w/credit card and the total is something like $23(16.95+4.95shipping)

i expect ams would feel fine taking unfair advantage of me. i, however, would not feel fine taking unfair advantage of ams.

that is the difference between ams and me.

i admit that after this experience they are on my 'i choose not to deal with these people' list. later, ron

I decided that this was the best advice and course of action. I accepted the delivery of the speakers, but I will not open the boxes, and I will not attempt to re-sell them until the matter is clearly decided between all parties. Worst case scenario, AMS demands full price--in which case I just say "send me a UPS call tag and the speakers will go back to you." I'm not out a penny, and they get their speakers back. :)

Oh, and Paypal CS emailed me back to say that they will only deduct the amount I authorized.
