So, my question for those who have been able to get their hands on the new BBPH is this... Is there enough of a difference in tone between the BBPH and the BB734A to justify getting one over the other? I know Hooky's son, Jack plays (and very much likes) the BB734a, but unfortunately there aren't any music shops in my area that carry Yamaha basses, so I don't have an option of trying them out.

Yamaha Peter Hook Signature Bass

This is the $500 question! The reverse P is a subtle change in tone+changes to the preamp and the matte/satin neck and translucent red are nice, and I prefer the aesthetics of the on pickup bs PJ, but it's a big price increase, and the black BB734a looks pretty nice if we are talking aesthetics. If the BBPH was $1000 instead of $1200 it would be easier to swallow the up charge. For $1200 you are getting in to higher end territory. Could probably find a last years model American PBass for that price and it will have a hard case too.
Yamaha make a good job in every bass price point. For a Signature (limited?) is a right price considering It is a new project that recreate an old project modernized.
There is no battle in price point between Yamaha and....a famous american maker. If you look at a BBP and an American one you see that a similar one for quality and pleasure is only a Custom Shop....
If you compare an indonesian TRB and a Mexican the same....Different way and experience in bass production.This is obviously in my modest and honest experience and in european marketplace and prices.

I think that is a fair point. Fender quality certainly does fluctuate-I think my 2012 American Standard Jazz bass is better built than the American Pro IIs I have seen. Would be nice to be able to get hands on with the BBPH before ordering, or perhaps a review comparing it with the 734 directly.
I've got a 734a on the way. I'm a huge Hook fan as well, thus I bought the Eastwood Hooky Bass 6 Pro a month ago. I've seen and listened to several clips of Hooky and his son Jack playing the BB734a (Hooky had the transparent black model that Yamaha gave him to take on tour a couple of years back), and he still managed to get that signature sound of his. Like you said, unless you really want to own his signature bass, I'm not sure that the BBPH is that far removed in tone to the BB734a when using the active neck pickup. Plus the BB734a seems to be a more versatile bass with the P-J setup.

I ordered the Transparent Black model. I really dig that matte black finish.
Awesome, same here. Back before I got my BB1200 a couple months ago, I was dead set on getting one in the same color. At the time the only ones in stock where the tobacco bursts or whatever that finish is called.
My BB734A arrived today. Extremely pleased with this bass. I must admit, I really came close to ordering the BBPH (and I still may someday, if it's still available), but the BB734A nails that distinctive New Order sound. Close enough for me anyway. Haven't spent a lot of time with it yet, but I tested it at home running it through an EHX Bass Clone into my Ampeg BA115v2 combo. Damn, what a fine bass! I can see why Hooky's son, Jack loves it. It certainly makes me think twice about shelling out $1200 for Hooky's signature Yamaha. I've been a big Joy Division/New Order fan since I was a kid, so I'm really glad that Hooky's got not just one, but two signature basses. For those of you that now own the BBPH, congratulations!

Me too. I saw NO in 1989 after loving them for years and he was the one I kept eyes on almost the whole time. The one member of the band who gave a damn about putting on a show.
guitar center cancelled. i'm not surprised though. they probably only got a few.
If anyone is still looking for one there's one available on Reverb from Gerald Music Online, from Canada but I'm pretty sure they ship to the US.
