Your Opinion on 8x10's

I played a 1540 18-20 years ago, and I'm thinkin' it was a pretty decent cab. I was pushing it with an SVT 2 PRO, and I can almost remember the great punch of the 10's and the lows of the 15... Then again, I've had a whole lot to drink in those 18-20 years as well.... Take care,

Alan

I would imagine it would work well if you biamped it maybe or used a crossover internal in the cab.. I am seriously thinking about buying it. Worst case i could cut it in half and have a 410 he and a 15 for $200.

You guys keep it going. It can't keep away from this thread. It is better than Facebook. Ha ha. We can call it bassface!

In terms of sonics, the flatback and the NV were almost totally indistinguishable from each other. No one would tell them apart in a blind test. The 3rd cabinet in that test was one of the "dark ages" 810s and was really outshined by both the flatback and the NV. I preferred the NV based on its more compact and lighter form factor. All of the newer 810s sound a lot better than the dark ages ones, but still not quite up to the flatback's level, though I haven't tried the heritage one yet, I don't think.

I'm plenty familiar with the science behind how speakers work and I'm sure that the fearful boxes perform admirably, but personally, I'm not interested in my cab being a big studio monitor. I'm also not sure that a wide-dispersion cabinet with massive low end extension is desirable in a lot of cases as that can often get in the way in terms of the overall mix.

You really need to wail on a Heritage 810 and tell us how you feel about it... Please?????? The "Dark" OSB's were real POS's...

Thanks,

Alan

If I could find one for $200, I'd buy 3...... What are you waiting on? That's $400 worth of drivers for $200....

Yeah. I dont really care if it beams. I imagine the 412 our guitar player uses beams too. Plus I'm about 24" from our drummer, my 810 pretty much right in his face and there's another 810 on the other side of the stage. Hopefully i can hear that one but it doesnt really matter when i cant because we all play to the main drummer and my bass.

We played a basement in DC and i let the other band use my cab and svt. It sounded pretty good about 40' back. I could feel it in my chest but i was mostly payin attention to some old dc hardcore/punkrock people that were there. Thought it was amazing they still come put to basement shows even though they are in their 50s and gave a good record label.

this is funny. So jaded and one sided of a view. Old school guys are closed minded, new school simply want to address technology changing. People who dig Ampeg 810s get agitated by fearful fans claiming that 810s are pointless, overkill, and easily dominated by a single 15. Fearful fans get pissed because not everyone wants one, or buys into their worldwide dominance. Round and round they go. I dig any piece of gear that gets the job done and done well. I too think that too many people here are pontificating, hypothetical, vacuum world living, bedroom playing, self proclaimed gear masters who have very little stage time- and when they do their playing is for shite, their band is for shite, and their focus is on their "gear" so they don't have to focus on the music and how bad things really are in their musical world. I've seen videos of guys playing a fearful that can barely play, but if you listened to their posts you would be ready to sign up for lessons. Kind of like a dating site where you can pose as anything you want- fat 300lb hairy dude claiming to be a 110lb sexy blond female. Take everything in stride- even what I spout- never know who I am ;) Point being- the most vocal guys here may have their pants wired tight, maybe not. One member here posts all kinds of vids and I think his playing and tone are mediocre at best while others kiss his arse. Strokes for folks......
Sorry, my post was dripping with more sarcasm than even I am used to. It was directed more at a common "Amps Section" behavior than an individual.

I guess I was venting my frustration in general with the persistent behavior in these sorts of threads to downplay or dismiss known issues simply because the vast majority uses rig configurations that employ them. I was thinking that since this is the case over, and over, and over again a vast amount of time, emotion and keystrokes could be saved by keeping it out of the discussion arena to begin with.

These threads all turn out the same way:

OP: What cab should I get?
Old School: Play what most people play... because that's what I use and most people do too
New School: Try some designs that are less than 40 years old, lots of improvements have been made.
Old School: Shut your pie hole, nobody wants your snake oil!
New School: But what about E=mc2??
Old School: None of those fancy science facts really matter and all my zillion gigs of experience prove it
New School: But what about PV=nRt?
Old School: <insert butt-hurt personal attack>
New School <insert retort and additional butt-hurt personal attack>
....Popcorn, get your popcorn here.
And where does that get us? Nowhere.

There is an incredible amount of knowledge and experience here that is being diluted by camp wars. It's just sad.

Also, getting event organizers to pony up for an outdoor PA is often out of the question if they haven't thought about it already. In our area it has become harder and harder for full bands to find gigs (lot's of DJ and acoustic stuff going on), let alone get a gig and start playing hardball with the event contact.

Often times we are stuck dealing with whatever is there when we show up.

I play 2 410's now, only for portabiliy BUT I miss my SWR Megolaith. That thing was AWESOME! Find a used one and enjoy....just a thought.

Geez, that's too bad dude. Ya had a point there....then ya lost it....too bad....

worxforme. just a word in defence of the "old dudes". while you were still filling your nappie(diaper) with mustard the old dudes were laying the foundation stones for modern rock against a background of hostility from the MAN and the church who were dead set on getting rid of the devils music, ie electric rock. we had little choice in our gear compaired to todays stuff but we were successful otherwise you would be playing a flute in a chamber music group.the "old dudes" generaly impart what is know as WISDOM and this is hopefully to be used by you younguns to not make the same mistakes as we did, for sure there are a few grumpy old guys who are stuck in their ways but i dont see much of it here on TB. i myself was lucky enough to retire in the mid 80s and buy my own cottage in the sun. i still have my teeth and hair and have not seen a doctor for decades. i play the music i grew up with when i want, whith who i want and where i want. i use graphite necked hot passive fenders and modern hybrid amps and heavy cabs ( keeps me fit) . now run on home to mummy and ask her what RESPECT means. cant comment on big 8x 10s as i have not used them for ages but they did the trick for me in the day.
we have a saying here for the younguns
I WAS IN BAGHDAD WHEN YOU WERE IN DADS BAG
old dude rant over
ps if i could i would put a smiley here but i cant do it from my last century star trek communicator.

At 41 years of age I don't really consider myself being old but some people do especially my kids. Anyway I really appreciate the wisdom and knowledge the older generation provides us. I don't understand many people and their disrespect for the "older dudes". Many of them are playing the "older dudes" music in cover bands or whatever. If they are trying to play their songs from that time frame why would they not want the tone from that time. I really like the sound from the 70's 80's and it seems to me with all of the new equipment coming out they like it too. Seems like everyone is trying to incorporate a tube in their preamp stage now for a somewhat old school sound. I have found it beneficial to go back and learn from some of the older players like Duck Dunn.

So I guess I am trying to say thanks older dudes. I have much respect for you guys.

Even though my view is distorted, I would like to point out that I was referring to old school and new school not old dudes and young dudes.

There are plenty of young guys who fly the vintage flag and equally as many seasoned players who have embraced new designs etc.

Also, just because something is new doesn't mean it's good - but sometimes it is really good... and just because something is old doesn't mean it's bad - but sometimes it really is in comparison.

Well said, neighbor.

I guess maybe I'm old at 63, but I don't like to think so. BUT, I do have degenerative arthritis, diabetes, a bad back and knee, and heart palpitations. Old age ain't for sissies, I'm tellin' ya. Anyway, the lighter my equipment the better. But I love the old sound and try best I can to emulate it on whatever I have. An 810 is great, but I just can't handle one. I still have my eye on something from Barefaced when I can afford it. Hopefully that will happen before I can't get around anymore.

Only opinion I have on 8x10 cabinets is that they are too big and heavy. I used a pair of Ampeg 4x10 cabs years ago and those became too much to haul around as well.

There's so much goodness in smaller packages nowadays that personally I don't see the allure of fridge sized gear. There's really no need to go big to get a big sound. But to each their own, of course.

Also, just because something is new doesn't mean it's good - but sometimes it is really good... and just because something is old doesn't mean it's bad - but sometimes it really is in comparison.

"Good" is completely subjective. I've tried new hi-fi designs, so-called "good" ones (i.e. properly designed), but I'll take an array of tens every time. And like Jimmy, I don't want too much high frequency response... even though I use bright tones. I want low treble aggressiveness, but not hi-frequency 'ping' that rarely works well when tube overdrive is dialed in. And yes, I like tube overdrive... even though it's "wrong" from an audiophile standpoint. :p

In another thread, Andy from Acme asked why a five string bassist would not want response down to 30Hz, and I answered him. Jimmy explained it earlier: sure, it's fun when the low frequencies make your pants flap, but IME that's usually not what the sound engineer wants onstage, or your bandmates for that matter. My 6x10 is typically just a stage monitor, but even when it has to fill the room, it works plenty well enough.

I've wondered about that - maybe too much off axis response might not work so great in some stage situations, since a player *should* be able to hear themselves best at their mic position, IMO... I'm guessing that wide dispersion might make it more difficult for other band members to hear themselves...

I always play and sing, and always have full PA support... I'll move around quite a bit when not singing, and definitely can't hear myself as well when switching stage sides with the guitarist, but it works out just fine... I'm thinking that some beaming is probably a good thing with a PA supported gig...

- georgestrings

Kinda what I was trying to get at.

There are situations, especially when PA is carrying the house, when having all backline sound going all directions is NOT the best way to do things.

Exactly what I'm getting at. I'll also go as far as to say that there are also times when a lot of low end extension isn't desirable on stage, especially with good PA support. I often eq out a good bit of low end on stage when I'm working with a big PA rig, which kinda sucks when the PA is off but all that low end gets filled back in when the house comes up. It might not be perfectly in phase but it's better for me hearing myself (i.e. the actual notes I'm playing) than having a bunch of low end rolling around on stage as well. This is also the reason why when setting up monitors for the band I get the soundman to roll out a good bit of bottom end (low mids for vocals) and leave in bit more upper midrange than I would if I was eqing the house. It sounds thin when the house is down but the low end comes back in when the house is up. I see too many guys checking monitors with the house out and trying to eq them like the house, then flailing when they bring the house up and the whole band is unhappy with the monitors. ;)

:D Hardly! But thanks...

Anyway, Heritage 810e...hope Mark gets to play one. I have a flatback and the only difference I can tell between them is the H810e is taller and I can hear more highs when I'm up close to it.

I'm heading to Orlando for week end of September, I'm sure they'll have one at BC that I can try. I've heard a lot of good things about them for sure. But even the newer CL and AV cabs are far superior to the dark ages ones.

Jimmy, are you going to be around/playing anywhere in the Orlando area then or will you be on the road (21st-28th)?
