My two cents as far as being in a metal band goes.

It's very easy to have a crappy metal band, and very hard to have a good one. It's no different than any other genre of music, some people hate it and others sing its praises.

There's a lot of things I don't like but I do my absolute best to try and respect all of it at some level. EDM excluded.

I guess I don't understand a "rebellion scene" If you want to be a rebel, fine. Be a rebel, play music your
parents or anyone's parents aren't likely to care for. But going full on satanic just for shock value to draw
negative attention to yourself is NOT rebellion. It's a cry of desperation and weakness.

I guess that's the problem with any music genre that labels itself as a "scene." If you see yourelf as part of a
scene you are already a poser and your credentials as a musical artist are already in question.

Just make music and let your music do the talking. You wanna wear all black? fine. You wanna look scruffy,
hairy and unkempt? Fine. You wanna wear makeup, spikey collars and chains? Who are you trying to fool?

I'll start to believe you are actually tough and rebellious when you start wearing a tutu and rocking a pink hello kitty guitar.

I stopped rebelling when bills had to get paid!

But I'd love to see these guys play a Daisy Rock guitar!!

I like it as long as it's called "Heavy Metal" & the bass is creatively played & not buried in the mix. For a while, the genre's repackaging as "Metal" involved, among other rock heresies, an odd insistence on burying the bass in the deepest bowels of the downtuned mix. Lately, though, I'm noticing a wonderful resurgence of bass guitar in Heavy Metal. Players like "Forest" LaPointe are forcing guitar-obsessed fans to appreciate the bass guitar, fretted & fretless. I love that.

Some heavy metal is extremely technical and I admire the skill and precision that it takes to play it. I enjoy the wizards and castles/ dungeons and dragons type stuff with operatic vocals,smoke filled stages,melodic solos etc. but alas, overall it is a genre of music that I associate with adolescence.

I know metal is the theme of many jokes around here(some deserved unfortunately....), but I suspect many that don't respect it have never played it! There *are* alot of terrible bands in any genre, metal seems to be an easy target!

I play metal, always have always will. It can either be the most challenging music to play or the most simple. Depends which band or what approach you take to it.

Appreciating and wanting to hear are two different things. Very easy to wrist brilliant riffs that are hard to stomach for more than a few measures, and very easy to get lost in the "culture" - at least one of these bands gets it :

Grew up on metal, love Sabbath, Zep, Metallica, Clutch... Guess I'm getting old cause all the barking stuff just gives me a headache.
But I also grew musically and like just about every genre (if the music is good )

Needs more context... the vast majority of (especially newer bands) metal bands are flat out terrible, but then there a couple of amazing bands that try to give the genre a good name, and give it the badassery associated with it.

If you ask me, the general musicianship in metal has been declining since the 90's. That's just in general, though.

Metal can be be all over the map in terms of melody, rhythm, complexity, and any other way you can place it. The bass can be super easy, technically complex, or the musical equivalent of running a marathon.

As for the costumes and all that, it's just having some fun. Live performance is a visual art, too.

Funny thing about that: Led Zeppelin and Rush both wrote songs that directly referenced Lord of the Rings. Somehow Zeppelin got away with it and was still liked by girls. Rush not so much.

The only Metal band I like is Lamb of God. Those guys and Pantera are really good and have mad respect for them. I have always respected Steve Harris of Maiden. For the most part Metal kind of gets on my nerves after a few songs.
