Zon basses - is everything OK ?

Hey everyone,

Thought I’d do a quick update on my situation. I did end up getting my bass at the end of July. It is everything I thought it would be and more, however I got it a year late and it was honestly a trying experience. InNoRush mentioned above how it’s always “1-2 months away” when you ask for completion date and I found that was happening to me too which was very frustrating. It was a rocky road ordering this instrument, with Martin’s hard drive failing in late 2021/early 2022, they lost a lot of build data and when they recovered it they confirmed with me a price that was much higher than originally quoted (the price I put a deposit on based off of). After this I was told not to worry about it as it was their error. Then at the last minute AFTER the bass was shipped they discovered that two invoices were created or there was some glitch and then tried to get me to pay the much higher price (a price I never agreed to or transacted upon). Beyond that Joe tried to say “I think we both know the original numbers agreed to” which I found rather insulting as I never agreed to them, in fact I immediately questioned them. Every interaction I had with Joe up to that point was very positive. Ultimately I had to dig out all my records and write a long terse email about how I was even put in this position, which ultimately got them to stick to their original commitment. I say this all because despite all this I am thoroughly enjoying my instrument and a lot of the sour feelings have melted away, which I was very worried about. Overall though I would seriously caution anyone from putting a deposit down with them, you will wait at least a year over quoted delivery time, probably longer at this point. I don’t hold anything against Joe or anyone there but I do believe there could be lots of improvement to the buying experience, communication, and customer service there.

This is sad to hear...would you at least share some pictures of the instruments so we enlight the bad experience (the Zon club thread might be a better place to do so)

Man, that sounds really frustrating— sorry you had to go through that ordeal.

Here are some pictures of my Sonus Custom. It’s a 4 string fretless with 4 hipshot xtenders, splittable dual coil pickups, active/passive circuit. Burl walnut top, with ash body.

I'm glad you finally got it and it is indeed gorgeous. Play some great music on that beauty!

Is the truss rod adjustment at the heel is something you requested?

My 2018 headless has truss rod adjustment at the heel (from what I've been told; I've never looked), but the neck has to be removed for access. Spokewheel adjustment would have been nice... but then I've never had any need to adjust neck profile, not even when tuning down a full step for one of my side projects.

Looks great!
I'm guessing you're experienced with a fretless that has the side dots in the same positions as a fretted bass. I've tried one with similar dot positions and it just did my head in . But then I've really only played unlined fretless.

Can you show us a photo of the back of the headstock please? I'd love to see how the four d-tuners look.

That is absolutely gorgeous! Also, really nice photgraphy as well

After the strange back-and-forth I had with Joe about black hardware, and after seeing yours, I know I made the right decision.

Play on!
