I know this is an old post, but I just picked up an EWS BMC2.

According to the BMC2 and Tri-Logic III manuals:

BMC2 mids: +/-12db at 160Hz to 2.5kHz

Tri-Logic III mids: +/- 10db at 250Hz to 3kHz

I am using the pedal to boost frequencies around 700 to 800Hz instead of using a general volume boost. Used it at a gig last Friday. Happy with the result. I am using the pedal in the 18v setting.

I will state that I find a separate volume knob and gain boost switch slightly redundant. I thought the gain boost switch might add grit, but that does not seem to be the case for me.

I have since removed its black footswitch topper as it interfered with the pedal engaging when stepped on.

My first electric guitar was a Kustom K200-A and it had both a metal nut and a zero fret. Pretty kool.

In theory the sadowsky preamp seems limited. In reality its one of the best out there for so long now. Lets be honest, I've never gonna cut bass on a on-board preamp (or the outboard pedal) and most active trble cuts are voiced to high to be that good for cutting, the passive tone control their is better for that. I could never stand my l-2500's until I started running them through sadowsky pre amps

I think it depends on how the finish aged. Examples both vintage and RI'd are all across the board and some look better than others.

Did anyone else see the fascinating PBS American Masters episode on Janis Ian?
She's mostly known for her song "Society's Child", which she wrote and recorded at the age of 14. Because it concerned a love affair which was doomed due to society's racial prejudice, no record label would touch it. One said they'd work with her if she changed the word "black" to something else, and she refused. She was finally signed by Verve, and the song made the charts in early 1967. Leonard Bernstein featured her on one of his TV specials, which was her big break.
At one concert, she put down her guitar and ran crying off the stage because some people in the crowd started yelling "[N-word] lover!!" The theater manager and stage hands persuaded her to go back out and continue and she did.
Bill Cosby (of all people) tried to get her blacklisted because he believed she was a lesbian. (She actually came out later, but at the time, no... she was basically still a child.)
Anyway, her courage was incredible. She also got support from Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.
She's still active in the folk world.
The documentary also gives you a look at the broader '60s NYC folk scene.

Late to this thread, but wanted to add a free option that wasn't mentioned back then.

I'm the developer of Chord Sequence (Bass Tab Player — 4-String Bass Tablature Editor) — browser-based bass tab editor for 4-string bass. No install, no account, completely free.

It does what Bass Thumper was describing:

- Enter notes on a 4-string staff (standard EADG tuning)
- Edit, move, and resize notes on a piano-roll grid
- Interactive fretboard showing fingering in real time
- Playback with Pick, Synth, or Slap sounds
- Export to WAV

Won't replace TablEdit or Guitar Pro for notation and printing, but if the goal is editing and hearing a bass line at no cost — it covers that.

Might be useful for anyone landing here from search.

I did a fair bit of work to my Goldtop. It had a dented fret when I got it. 13th and 14th fret on the D string both sounded as Eb IIRC

Reshaped the neck to 1.5" nut width, and finished with tung oil.
Cut down the headstock to a Gibson-ish shape
Plugged tuner holes and redrilled for Gotoh GB350s
Added veneers front and back of the headstock + gold foil Epi logo
Designed and 3D printed a custom mounting bracket to put the Electar pickup in a Tbird chrome cover
Added a tailpiece and locking bridge studs
Removed the impedance indicator ring and added chrome foil numbers

It's 7.5lbs with zero neck dive

Very interesting interview, worth watching whether you are an upright or electric player. I play electric, but found this useful.

Emma is a new professor at LMU in charge of the Jazz program. She played with Herbie Hancock and is quite accomplished, and has interesting thoughts about developing unique techniques, recording, mixing upright bass. Chicago jazz influenced with African overtones.

I have a Lane Poor MM pup in one of my Modulus Fleas and it's beefy. I have no experience with their other pickups though I am sure they are great as thre are so sought after. That said, I also really like the sound of Yamaha's stock pickups and electronics.

I used Blue Steels once or twice about 15 years ago. I didn't like the feel, but the tone was fine after they were broken in. Not sure where or when I bought them, but I still have at least one new set in the gear closet.

But I love the SR2000s, and have some on my G&L M-2500 now. They're a great match for the MFD humbuckers, and I have a four-string set waiting to be installed on my G&L JB--if I ever regularly play gigs on a four again. I discovered them when, to my surprise, a few sets of Dean Markley strings showed up with the M-2500 courtesy of The Bass Place in AZ. Best case candy ever. I also liked the Helix set. Those were fantastic. I used them to cut a track for one of my brother's projects, and he was very happy with the tone.

My main strings, however, are DR. Due to finger issues I don't use the stiff Lo-Riders anymore, so it's all Fat Beams, Hi-Beams, and Pure Blues.

I really like my SW115/112 cabs not that I need them for what I do. One cab I owned with a big bottom end (totally subjective of course) was a Fearful 15/6.

Folks say it’s nothing but a gimmick and you can do the same thing with Darkglass pedal and a stingray special. That may be true, but if a person didn’t own a stingray special, this bass would definitely make them happy. I didn’t even have to dial my tone in the other day. It was ready to go and sounded amazing.

Or start from the smallest gauge and multiply by the reciprocal of the ratio. In this case 1.531. Now applying that ratio to each string from smallest to largest by multiplying by 1.531 yields with rounding
F#3/.020
B2/.030
E2/.046
A1/.071
D1/.110

Obviously the exact gauge as given is not always possible for every string and one has to choose the closest gauge available in the brand and type of string desired. You can see that your 60 gauge and 85 gauge for E2 and A1 are a big departure from the ratio. A 45 sounds about right. Think of it as how E2 is on a guitar. Your .020 is common for G3 on a guitar and is a good fit for slightly downtuning without increasing the gauge in this case. Your .035 B doesn't depart from the ratio much. So prob not worth changing. So that leaves the 085 A1 string. You say you like that gauge. Nonetheless if you wanna do the ratio thing, swapping it out with an 070 is the go.
In summary. 3 of your gauges could stay in place. And replace the A and E with .070 and .045 gauges respectively.
