If Minneapolis is not too far away:

Hi folks, I am participating in the 2026 Southwest Collaborative Music Conference led by my friend Thollem McDonas and the folks at Interference Series . I think there will be at least 3 of us from NM ( incl Thollem who is based here if he is not touring ). As of the current roster, I am the other bassist , I will be playing my upright mostly but may bring an EB as well. Will also be playing sax, Would be happy to meet TB'ers if anybody is going. or live around f-the area, Sedona , Prescott or even Phoenix/Tucson. There are 2 free show and a performance on Saturday as well as well as a panel on Sunday. This is the 3rd year I believe.

I've been playing one for a couple months now and it's now my default for wine bar gigs, ie packed in tight and sometimes having to dodge staff and guests. I recommend having it set up properly- the intonation was way out until I adjusted the neck, bridge and filed down the nut slots. I picked it up used from a big box retailer and aside from putting on flats, I'm guessing the previous owner didn't do anything to it because the plastic was still on the pick guard and under the tone knobs.

It sounds good on its own, but a little compression helps focus the tone, imo (I'm using a MXR 282 in the spirit of keeping things small). For about $400 plus some labor, I'm very happy with it. It's also nice that the pickups and tone controls are the same size as a standard 4-string if I decide to mod it down the road. It's not replacing my 34" 5-strings, but I'm taking it out more than the elastomer-stringed ubasses I've got.

Photo attached from a recent gig- the bassist I was subbing for said it sounded a lot bigger than it had any business to. I really like the stealth look- even other musicians often don't register that it's not a regular JB. (I'm 175cm/5'9", not a giant).

Yes. You might even the two (pre vs pre + power amp) out a bit more by rolling in a bit of the Sensitivity. Just an idea. Difficult to be sure. Too much fog in Santa Cruz. .

If you’re not carving/building more than one body, or if you don’t have some really specific detailed intricate design details, it may be much faster and much cheaper just to do a one-off handcarved body for your needs.

Also, I have no idea what skills, tools, and capabilities you have, but I see questions and requests about CNC frequently, and never sure of the *knowledge level of the person asking so here’s a quick overview of the process (there are a lot of details in each step of the process, of course, but this should give a conceptual overview of what’s going on).

Yeah I found one vendor used an effect on all of their sound clips

I play the same music as you, and similar tonal goals. The Genzler Kinetix and the NC210 did it all for me. Killer sounding rig, and easy to transport.

We had an AM station in the area during the early '70s that played an entire album side every evening, often by bands you'd never hear on the FM pop stations. They put on a lot of heavier and progressive stuff by Yes, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Blue Oyster Cult, Pink Floyd, etc., until near the end of the '70s when they were bought up by some conglomerate and converted to a country station.

My first encounter with a Yes song was in a high school mechanical drawing class where the teacher allowed students to bring in a radio or tape deck. One guy brought in the Fragile album on cassette, and when I heard the bass line on Roundabout, my thought was "I need to learn how to do that". That prompted me to start learning bass guitar.

I made a very simple stop for the fret cutting sled to make the cutting even more simple;

The Mesa D-350 and the Megellan 350 have different tone characteristics but they share one trait and that is that they both push a lot more air than you would expect. the Mesa has more character in the tone and the Magellan is more neutral. I have used both with upright bass with excellent results.

What pickup and strings are you using on the upright? What cab(s)? If you had to pick just one of these heads which would it be?

After using the Mesa D-350 with acoustic instruments for about a year I remained indifferent. Based on my love for the sound and build quality of the old Genz Benz Shuttle heads this Magellan 350 is appealing. A small head is important to my workflow.

I feel like mid scoop is one of the defining characteristics of a Jazz Bass, with both pickups on anyway. If I want punch out of mine, I roll off the bridge pickup and go with just or primarily the neck pickup. (Or vice-versa, for a different kind of punch.) Any of the usual suspect noiseless pickups will avoid buzz and hum. I have Ultra Jazz pickups in my main J-bass and don't feel the tone is unusually scooped with just one pickup, but it definitely is with both of them.

Just make 2 nuts and glue them with weak glue or not a all. That's what I did with my E-C bass so I can bring it back to B-G

But then, where/who did Page swipe them from? If indeed what you’re hearing is in any way derived from LZ in the first place…I’m hearing more Booker T./MG’s meets Hendrix, kicked way up in tempo, fusion style. I seriously doubt that Zep was on anyone’s mind during that take.

Just a note: I didn't even know that the delano setup on my Maruszczyk has DIP switches to set midrange frequency etc. The Sonar 3M/S has these switches in the electronics cavity:



These pickups and preamp are truly amazing. The bass is as loud and "wider" sounding in passive mode than the Nordstrand pups on my Spectra Pro will deliver without using most of its EQ boost.

There's short thread from last year pitting the two against eachother However, I'd say they work even better together.

Running my DCX in the Pre loop of the Capo lets me retain a raw DI signal and all the touch sensitivity of the DCX.
It's also the best I've heard the DCX OD.

What's your favorite use of the Capo's Pre loop? Your favorite pairing with a DCX?

fwiw, I haven't dealt with Kiesel but judging from other threads about Kiesel/Carvin, they're usually pretty responsive to queries, so it's worth an ask. Custom pickup placement is an off-menu option so they might not be able to tell you how a specific bass was built, but they should be able to say where the default pickup placement was for a particular model even if it's discontinued.
