First, worrying about running an amp at 2 ohms when it is rated for it is ridiculous. If it couldn't be safely done, the manufacturer wouldn't rate their equipment for it. They always have a little safety factor built in to the specs. They don't need lawsuits due to everyone's amps catching...

If it were me, I'd get some fluorescent or glow-in-the-dark paint (any good hobby shop should have these) and paint the side markers with it. That should make the markers stand out enough.

Can you use guitar pedals with a bass? Sure. Will it do any harm? Not at all. However, with many guitar pedals you will lose some of the lower frequencies from your signal, as guitar pedals are optimized for guitar and not for the lower range of the bass.

If you want darker sounding strings than standard nickel rounds while staying with something that has a similar sound and tension, then you should try some groundwounds. I've tried the D'Addario (halfwounds) and GHS versions (brite flats) and they're both good strings.

What kind of strings are you currently using? Amp settings can only do so much, and if you're starting off with the wrong sound at the instrument, you're just not going to get where you want to be. For instance, stainless steel strings will give you more of a midrange punch than nickels.

On the bright side, you wouldn't have to worry about fret buzz... :D
