Do you guys ever get GAS to buy a guitar?

    Of course ... I was a guitarist ('59 - '66) before was a bassist ('66 - '15); so I have natural affinity for guitars. In fact, I just bought 3 over the last 2 days. What can I say ... I'm nearly 71, so I do because I can!

WHICH PUP MANUFACTURER MOST CLOSELY DUPLICATES VELVET HAMMER PUPS

Thanks, Snaxter ... now I'll gather up Senior Panza and go looking for a troublesome windmill to best!

WHICH PUP MANUFACTURER MOST CLOSELY DUPLICATES VELVET HAMMER PUPS

Snaxter ... you hit the nail on the head ... APPROXIMATES is a more accurate word. If you don't mind, what did they finally go for? $175-200? The reason I asked about a "close to Velvet Hammer pickup" from a current supplier was mostly based on the extreme unlikelihood of finding a set for...

WHICH PUP MANUFACTURER MOST CLOSELY DUPLICATES VELVET HAMMER PUPS

I have need for a set of Red Rhodes VELVET HAMMER pups for a P Bass build I'm looking into. Now, my first choice would be to find a set, NOS or used ... PERFECT!!! Failing that, which if any of the currently available manufacturers makes a pup that most closely duplicates Red's beauties?

Are You A Natural Or A Neophyte?

Started playing guitar in '59 (a big Airline arch top). Played rhythm guitar in a band from '61 to '66 and then switched to bass and have been there ever since! I enjoyed playing guitar ... but LOVE playing bass. It came so naturally it was as though I had been born to play bass.

You're right ... I got confused ... salt for pastas ... clear water for strings.

    Cleaning and reusing strings?

Many years ago, while visiting Gruhn Guitars in Nashville, I got to talking with one of the guys there and he put me on to boiling. That was probably 30+ years ago and it's worked for me. Just ask you wife if it's OK to use her big chili pot BEFORE you fill it up with water, a dash of salt...

paying rent to rehearse at a band member's home

OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!! Absolutely NO! I created a "band room" in the basement of our new home when we built it. My bandmates only had to bring their guitars (and only because they wanted to), since I had everything set up and ready to go ... all the time.

    Is an 18 better than a 15?

I've used 15" JBL 140F's in a pair of "Joe's Sound & Salami" bins for decades and have no complaints. Nicely portable too ... except they're heavy as hell!

Why is the bass inherently more rhythmic?

I've played for 50 years, but feel a little intimidated posting my thoughts here since I've had ZERO formal musical training ... so here goes. Baja Clarkko and Ulf Buck hit on something that I feel as well. When I'm playing and I'm in the groove with my drummer, we mutually reinforce each...

Real difference between MIM and MIA

Well, I had a MIA original 1972 Jazz, Natural Ash / Maple w/Pearl Bloxs and a 1973 Precision Natural Ash / Maple, but I did 90% of my playing with my MIJ reissue '62 P Bass for 28 years ... by choice! I also owned a MIM Fiesta P Bass that I used for our "The Shadows" set. I've even played a...

    Fired from a band because........

Your story reminds me of a line from the movie, "Jersey Boys", when Nicki keeps saying: "Maybe this is a good time for me to start my own group." Seriously ... maybe you need to find about 3 or 4 other musicians and go for it. For my part ... having to deal with this kind of "unprofessional...

Falling out of love with your bass

Brother, you said a mouthful! I made a similar kind of mistake and I could just kick myself to death every time I think about it. I unloaded a '72 Jazz Bass, Nat/Ash Maple Pearl Blox, that I had owned for THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS ... and it was still DEAD MINT, covers, case candy ... the whole 9...

I FOOLISHLY sold a '72 Natural/Ash Maple/Pearl Blox Jazz Bass that I had owned for 38 years!!! I also sold a beautiful '73 Natural/Ash Maple P Bass that I had owned for over 20 years. I sold an 80's Fiesta Red Rosewood P Bass that I owned for 20 years. WHAT AN IDIOT!

What fretboard do you prefer for Precision basses?

Either ... but they must have frets!!!! Seriously, much depends on the finish/color. Heck, they're like women ... they all look good to me!

Should I Let Go of My First Bass? Vacation, and Other Band Purchases.

OK ... here's my take. 1. How much do you expect to net from selling this bass? 2. Will that amount be of any REAL consequence to your budget? The reason I ask is that ONCE YOU'VE SOLD IT ... IT'S GONE FOREVER. You sound like a young man (I'm 70) so I would like to share my personal experience...

Are you still using cassettes to listen to the music?

SAVE THEM ALL. When you die ... someone can throw them away. I'm 70 years old; been playing in bands since 1961-62. I have a ton of cassettes from the last two bands I played with (Bass). The first was 1972 to 1982. The second was 1982 to 2008! I also have CDs and DVDs ... but the cassettes...

As a Bass player, my oh-so-sweet '72 Jazz Bass (Nat Ash/ Maple FB) through a Fender Bassman head and a pair of Dual Showman 15 bottoms back in 1972! Our Rhythm player had a matching Ash Strat and Lead player had a '64 Blue Ventures Mosrite.

    Just commited TB heresy...

Thanks Greg C and Hopkins. Gosh, I have Fender 950's on my 3TSB/TORT, but rounds on my Fiesta/Maple so I guess I'm OK. I certainly wouldn't want to commit some grievous social error and have others throw fruits and veggies at me when I walked by.

What was your first bass guitar?

Framus "STAR" double pickup, single cut away @1966. Prior to that I had played on a '58 P Bass and a '63 Jazz Bass. (They had belonged to my college roommate Freshman and Sophomore year who was the Bass player in my first band ('62-'66). That Framus was a ROYAL POS!!! Feedback was almost...

Is The P-Bass Thing Altering Your Brain?

I played a '72 Jazz Bass until 1982 when I picked up a MIJ P Bass (came via a friend with a Japanese wife, bootleg, if you will as it was a non-importable model). I played that P Bass for the next 25 years! I still have it. It's a GREAT BASS. I also had a '73 Natural Ash, Maple neck (profile...

    Fender Precision Bass thread

I had 50 years of playing, 6 years playing rhythm guitar and 44 years playing bass. Best sounding 15" cab

I gotta' go with my pair of Joe's Sound & Salami 1 X15s with JBL 140s. I bought them from Corrine back in maybe 1980/81 (I could pull a speaker for a better dating). I used them constantly until I had to hang up playing in 2005 (progressive nerve damage to my hands), but I sure loved them.

HELP! I lost all motivation to be a better bass player

Fear not. I started playing bass in 1967 (after starting out as a rhythm guitarist in a band for 7 years previous). I continued playing with my younger brother's band from 1972 to 1980 and then joined my "last band" and played with them for the next 25 years. Then progressive nerve damage...
