    Playing in the rain?

What's the general consenus? We've got an outdoor gig this afternoon, weather is forecasted for rain. Venue/location is NOT covered, so the band and gear (PA, amps, drums) would be exposed, maybe draped with tarps.. Guitarist still wants to do it even if it's light rain.. my inclination is...

Cover shell for '51 P pickup?

I know it's not likely, but does anyone make a shell for a 51p pickup... ? The naked fragility of this thing, combined with my thumb fishing for an anchor, and generally aggressive right-hand technique, makes me want it covered in plastic (or wood?) Calling it a shell to avoid confusion...

Labellas in the SF Bay Area?

Just realized I have no backups of my beloved 760FM's and will be recording this weekend. Does any shop carry the Labella line in the Bay Area?

Rack Bags, who uses them? And an almost disaster story.

I use a rack bag with Aggie DB750. No problems and I can one-hand carry it (at least for short distances.. lol)

Any badass pickup that can fit under the Pickupcover of a 51 P!

What was the outcome of discussions with Lindy Fralin? I just installed the lindy 10% overwound dual coil 51p in a jazz neck position. A very "rounded" dynamic - focused fat thumpy compared to previous jazz neck pickups (including nj4, bartolini dual coil, aggie 70's wind). Chrome flatwounds...

Any badass pickup that can fit under the Pickupcover of a 51 P!

I just acquired a fralin dual coil '51p 10% overwound, which might do want you're looking for. It's not yet installed, so I can't give any feedback yet. Kinda pricey at $140.

    Beck at Treasure Island

Just wanted to say thanks for the great show last night! Before I could even spout off to her about who you were, my wife asked me who the rockin' bass player was. Love your enthusiasm and tasty playing. And the M83 record has really grown on me (I was cynical out the gates about that project).

    A J pickup that sounds like a P?

I've got a P body routed for jazz pups that I'd like make sound like a P as much as possible. Is there a brand/model of Jazz neck pickup that sounds more like a P than others of its kind? Or is it the split config of a P pickup what gives it that P sound? Before I get inundated with suggestions...

    High priced power cords, koolaid?

This is why the first thing I do after deciding where the stereo goes in my home is to install multiple 20 amp dedicated circuits with fresh, 10 gauge Romex and 20 amp hospital-grade receptacles. I don't know if physics backs me up or not, but I can sleep at night believing that clean(er) power...

    Aguilar DB751 - worth it?

In a loud rock band, with a DB 750 and a fEarful 15/6(tube), I haven't yet had an excuse to also bring along my 12/6/1 to our regular small club shows. Unless we do something outdoor, it would be purely for the visual image of having a big stack behind me (I've actually considered doing this...

    Aguilar DB751 - worth it?

True about way less coin, but I have a DB750, as well as a tonehammer pre + crown xls2500... and they don't sound very related.. the TH/Crown combo is anemic in comparison, and the tone controls don't sound the same (With its mid-sweep knob and overdrive circuit, the TH pre is far more...

Advice on inexpensive passive PA speakers?

Thanks for the informative the responses! Tempted to get the Yamaha club series, but too $$. The Mackies look like the best value on Amazon for my purposes, so I'm going for them. I intend to eventually use them in my band's rehearsal studio as vocal monitors.

Advice on inexpensive passive PA speakers?

So my family is having a reunion gathering and I've been tasked with providing the sound system. As we have amateur musicians in the family, the request is for mics + pa for vocals, guitars, keyboard. This will also will be the playback system for karaoke/itunes/DJ/party music. I currently...

    Aguilar DB750?

I love my DB750, but the fan noise is annoying when using it for low volume practice at home. You'd think they would have put a thermal sensor in them so fans only engage / speed up when the amp is pushed, not whirring away at full speed while idle. Was this corrected on the 751?

the best bass overdrive/distorsion?!!-darkglass electronics b3k

I use Labella's, cuz they, um, sound like flats are supposed to sound. I have Chromes on my 5 string jazz, but it stays home as it doesn't fit the feel of my current project. Chromes are nicely balanced between roundwound twang and flatwound thud. I'd definitely recommend using them with a B3K.

I play heavy flats, but I like the sound of them overdriven. I can go from motown thump on steroids to dark & grindy or bright & clanky depending on OD box & settings. What flats + OD don't do for me is that clean & twangy modern jazz / funk / versatile cover band sound. I don't mind.

    The Official fEARful Club!

Hard on the ears doesn't mean intolerable for functional use. Heck, I find many studio monitors and home hifi speakers to be hard on my ears. Maybe I should put it this way: I wouldn't want to sit down and listen to a Mahler symphony with them. (Although adding a couple of powered 15subs to my...

    The Official fEARful Club!

Although I haven't heard a Thunderchild, I'm familiar with Duke's home hifi designs and accept KJung's comparisons. There's really no need to get all controversial about this. Despite being relatively loud & low, uncompressed, and flat off/on axis compared to any commercial bass cab, does...

If you were gonna build a fEARFUL

15/6tube. You can always add another one, or do what I did and add a standard 12/6/1 (it's a width match to the 15/6 tube when stacked sideways on top). The extra cost of cab and xover components is worth the modular transport flexibility and convenience of having 2 fully functional cabs.

Metal bassist looking to upgrade gear, plz advise

+1 on Crown XLS or Peavey IPR. Pair it with a preamp effect pedal such as Tonehammer, Rusty Box, VT Deluxe or Darkglass. (buy used). Sure, there are more "cool" bass amps there, but hard to beat the price for this much power and tone. Ditch the 2x10, get another 15" cab. Even better, if you...

Rusty Box as OD effect.. I'll try it as a pre with a Crown XLS 2500 (currently performing duty as a home practice amp lol) Getting a bit off-topic, but is your Rusty Box kinda noisy?

Just received my B3K the other day and rushed over to the rehearsal space to make some noise. It's effing glorious. I wish I had this pedal back when I was playing metal / thrash. Fortunately I do have a few opportunities to use this tone in my current project. In fact, I love it so much that it...

Your Best Jazz Bass Pickup Set

It's all so very subjective because it also involves synergy with your preamp(s), type of strings, pickup position, etc. Heck, even a different tone cap value on a passive setup will alter the character. For your goals of reducing leading-edge clank I'd consider the Aguilar 60's wind or...

400+, SVT, New Mesa, Power rating vs. spl output.

Already been said, but you've got too many other variables going on to justify pointing the finger at amp wattage ratings. Using an SPL meter and the same cab would help. The SPL meter apps in my smart phone have come in handy for casual testing like this. Even with same cab, perceived loudness...
