New Bass Day: Pretty In Pink

Nice choice. Here's mine. Upgraded with a Lindy Fralin pickup, CTS pots, and an oil-filled capacitor. Full Plek job and a perfect setup. This bass easily keeps up with my Mike Lull P4.

Am I crazy or is a used Carvin DCM1000L the perfect just-power amp?

My experience with Carvin power amps was very poor. I had a DCM1000 that I used with a Trace Elliot V-Type preamp or a BBE preamp. The DCM1000 continually went into protect mode - especially during live gigs. I was running everything within proper specs and with a flat eq. I sent the amp to...

Catastrophe at rehearsal...lesson learned: BOSS GT-6B

One reason I prefer an extremely simple bass rig. Bass > cable > amp. There is little to go wrong and my setup usually takes less than 5 minutes.

Probably. I use the CL-310-DH with a TC Electronic BQ500 head. It's not even my main rig. That cab isn't lightweight and I have another amp I prefer for easy transport.

    Guy Pratt Shows His Basses

I have one of those. It's the Ashdown CL-310-DH. I think they were discontinued a long time ago. The footprint is tiny, so it's great for stages with limited room.

Is it just me or are lightweight basses overrated?

I enjoy a good lightweight bass. My Mike Lull P4 weighs just over 7 lbs and is outstanding in every way. That said, heavier basses do have some differences in sound. Case in point is Steve Harris, who has used the same circa 1970 Fender Precision bass since the later 1970s. He says that bass...

I have the Fender American Professional Pro I (made in 2017). It is antique olive and has a rosewood fingerboard. While I did eventually swap the pickup for a Fender 62 custom, there is nothing wrong with the factory V Mod pickup. Just make sure your strings are centered between the...

Loctite purple is the correct answer. Blue is too strong for this purpose. I remove each screw and apply a tiny drop of Loctite onto the middle of the threaded area. I have a Harley Benton MV-4P. Because I wasn't satisfied with the stock electronics, I installed a spare Lindy Fralin pickup that I had in my parts bin. This bass sounds just as good as my Mike Lull basses. Also plays just about as good because I had it Plek'd.
