if you rest your thumb on the pickup while playing the 4 then just imagine the B string is the pickup when on the 5. you only need to be aware of the B string when playing the lower 5 notes...

Mainly a tension issue. if the tension is low compared to the other strings it tends to flop around and cause some buzzing.... learning to play it softly helps to decrease the S***iness of it

+1 you should wear your bass high enough that your wrist is straight when fretting on the E string and you naturally tend to use your thumb and not your palm as the resistance/pivot to your fretting fingers.
