    mild saturation pedal recommendations

Sansamp para driver v2. Very useful pedal for shaping your tone ( subtle or otherwise). And a full featured DI.

    Pedals and Tapewounds?

No problem w tapes and pedals. My main working bass wore tapes for years and was used regularly w pedals. Comps, OD, fuzz, octave, delays etc all fine.

    can anyone ID this bass....

Paul Bryan (amazing musician) is playing this lovely white offset bass on Amee Manns Tiny Desk and I wonder if any resident experts here can ID it for me? you'l need to skip to the 4:00 mark. thanks!

What has been the most interesting pedal for you so far in 2023

Was the hologram microcosm but lately has been the Fairfield shallow water. Honorable mention to the ever weird DOD rubberneck.

Nice small synth for live performance

. I love the grandmother its one if my fav moogs ( that spring reverb ❤️) but I rarely gig w it. On stage in a band I really prefer stable DCOs and patch memory. As far as “magic moog filter mojo” maybe in studio ok sure, but onstage w a band nah. whatever difference exists between...

Nice small synth for live performance

The modular/ eurorack money hole is worse than owning a sailboat. I’m in too deep to get out but I honestly tell friends to be careful with that stuff lol.
  9. eliascalles

Nice small synth for live performance

yeah it’s 8 AA and so far I’ve not gotten more than 2.5 hrs max. I prob wouldn’t gig it on batts unless I had too

Nice small synth for live performance

the newest firmware update adds a paraphonic mode ( 2 notes). Along w many other nice features ( sub osc can operate independently being a major one).
  11. eliascalles

Nice small synth for live performance

I have all of the synths on your list ( I also work as a keyboard player). As long as 2 octaves work for you , the bass station would be my first choice by a mile esp with the 2.5 firmware update. That said there are so many variables and you’ll need to decide what matters most to you...

    Hey Drummer (A Rant)

LOL Hey bass player. You’re not Vic Wooten, stop trying to play every song like it’s an extended solo. Just hit the damn root on the damn one. Please stay below the 12th fret at all times, oh and nice quiver, I’m sure that $5k exotic wood 6 string fretless will be handy when muddling...

Experiences with large age gap between rest of band?

I am in a few bands w big age gaps. In one band, everyone could be my father, and in another band, I could be everyone’s father. I find occasional moments of disconnect that I think relate to the age differential, but in general, I think it’s pretty low down the list of regular issues

2008-2009 MIM jazz opinions on that era?

Hey y’all. I’ve had MIM jazz basses before one my of favs was a 98. Anyway I have a chance to get a 2008-2009 jazz in a trade but I won’t get to play it first so….. any general feedback on that era of MIM fender ? Thanks!

Please recommend a new head for us...

As mentioned endless choices. I’ll toss the quilter bass block in the mix.

The whole band got fired on the gig tonight!

“Country” is pretty amorphous term at this point. I do a classic country act sometimes (hank Johnny patsy merle George jones etc) and almost always get some kinda noise for various reasons. they howl if we go too bluegrass or they howl when we don’t lol. They howl if we don’t play last...

First Amp Head: Darkglass, Mesa, Aguilar, others

Not on your list but I was really happy w the quilter bb800 and now happier w the 802.

Just curious - do you all use covers for your PA gear ?

All my equipment is stored and transported in hard cases except for the subs which have padded soft covers. Mixers, processing and power in roto racks. Instruments in skb cases ( bases guitars drums synths). Back line and PA tops in traditional plywood road cases. Most of the lighting is...

Groupie Accidentally Sleeps With Bass Player

lol. Truth be told I see way more action as a drummer than a bass player.

Poll: Who's played New Year's Eve in the last 5 years, and was it for more pay than a regular gig?

I play nye every year. It’s always considerably more than typical pay.
  23. eliascalles

When during your day do you play bass?

I gig 4-6 nights a week and rehearse most days. Almost never play the bass otherwise.
  24. eliascalles

Have you ever tried/bought something just because of the artist(s) that use it?

I’ve never bought any signature bass stuff but plenty of drum and synth stuff. Most of my cymbals are somebody or others signature line. That said I’m a sucker for blackout p basses and there is a tony Franklin fretless I wouldn’t mind having.
  25. eliascalles

What happens to drummers AFTER they’re fired?

We refashion ourselves as bass players since bass is easier to play and it’s less gear to haul.

Has anyone tried going direct into Soundcraft ui24r?

yeah i'm down to 3-4 mic setup for my kit. i typically leave the high z inputs open just in case i need them. never ceases to amaze how often guitar players show up with pedal boards and amps that don't work lol.
  28. eliascalles

Has anyone tried going direct into Soundcraft ui24r?

I second the recommend for the UI24 FB group. great resource. Saved me a lot of time and money w connectivity and touch screen issues. in the past I rarely had enough channels to run 8 or more drum mics, and now that I have the open inputs, I've moved to using far fewer drum mics live (I work...

Has anyone tried going direct into Soundcraft ui24r?

I have that mixer and also run sound from stage. Have run bass direct many times and has sounded great. Usually I run a bass amp because I like what it does for the stage sound, and even when running no amp and direct I usually have a preamp on the pedal board just for more tactile...

Recommendations for a 'weird sounds only' board

Meris ottobit jr hologram microcosm. both super fun and full of weirdness. DOD rubberneck analog delay capable of endless crazy with the rubberneck feature, one button regen, modulation and drive and being able to put other pedals in its own fx loop ( comp in the loop super cool). ehx...

You’re favorite reverb/delay dual threat pedal?

Sometimes I pair a dod rubberneck Delay w a blue sky verb for ambient/ synth gigs and loop bass stuff through that, but I got a hologram microcosm a couple months ago and it’s the ultimate ambient spacey pedal w delays and verb and a lot more. has a cool looper in it as well.
  32. eliascalles

    Thoughts on delay for bass

DOD rubberneck. Great sounding analog delay w modulation and tone/drive on the repeats, tap tempo, a couple of quirky but fun features ( pitch up or down the repeats, sell oscillation/ auto feedback) and an fx loop onboard for the repeats.
  33. eliascalles

    Egotistical guitar players

Weird. I’ve been doing this professionally for 35 years and I’ve never had any issues w musicians and their personality defects lol.

    Over drive pedal recommendation

EHX crayon is another cheap pedal that’s great on bass.
  35. eliascalles

    Overdrive pedal suggestions (again)

EHX crayon ticks all your boxes and it’s cheap.

    Bass weight?

4 hour gigs ouch! around here a typical restaurant/bar gig is 3 sets (45min per with 15 break) at most. my main working band now we rarely play more than 2 hours.
  37. eliascalles

    Bass weight?

Yeah I never cared about weight. Balance yes.
  38. eliascalles

Basses you wanted to love, but couldn't.

G&L Asat. Loved all the tonal range and the neck felt good, just could never get comfortable with it.
