    I built a bass wall.

I have thought about covering it up, but that's a return vent. So while there is 'some' airflow over the headstock, it's ambient room air as opposed to heated (or cooled) air. I also plan to leave that space empty most of the time, I just staged everything for the photo op.

    I built a bass wall.

So I finally got mine done and full, although one or two of them look a little funny... One more coming in the next few months, then I move on to collecting amps... I pretty much copied the OP, although I made the block bigger and used 4 screws each.

I am the A-hole, but how bad?

Wow, did this blow up! I had to step away from the thread for a while, since I was starting to really hammer myself hard over it (again). I promise to read all the responses, but that's gonna take me some time now. And I thank you all for taking the time to post, no matter where you stood on...

I am the A-hole, but how bad?

Thank you all. Lots of great (and opposing) points here. I appreciate all of them. Yes, I have (non music) things that I need to work on: asserting myself without being a jerk is a crucial social skill that I am bad at. For me the crux of it was his use of the word 'let'. That was made it a...

I am the A-hole, but how bad?

Thank you guys so very much. As I said, I'm not good at standing up for myself, so this has been very helpful (to put it mildly)

I am the A-hole, but how bad?

Good points, all of it. This guy is bad, makes my inexperienced ass look like the second coming of Jaco, so I was ready to let it go... until his comment about presumed permission. E: I'm thinking that I am in the wrong band, but in BFE Missouri, there aren't many options. But you are certainly...

I am the A-hole, but how bad?

This is one of those instances where the drummer has shepherded a noob bassist and done a very good job of it. He has taught me a tremendous amount about rhythm, and has tried to teach me even more that I am just not yet able to grasp

I am the A-hole, but how bad?

So, we're at a gig (private bbq party), we're on break, I'm off to the side chatting with Mrs. Iggy and I look over to see our lead singer hanging out by my bass. Uh oh, oh no, please don't... Yep, he did it, sets his plate of BBQ on my amp, picks up my bass and started trying to figure out...

    Gibson... again...

I think that this could have been a great PR move: "Gibson excises the demon of bad design decisions with a backhoe". But they just forgot to be the ones to release the video... oops

operator's manual - do you read it?

Good Grief! I've been looking for recommendations for an electric razor... I didn't expect to get them here, but I followed this thread to that thread and now I know what I'm going to get. Unexpected TB bonus feature!

Does seeing/hearing great bass players make you wanna "quit"?

Nope. I see at as inspiration, although I'm old enough to have to 'triage' my inspiration - my list of things to improve is already pretty long :laugh:

Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

Thanks for the ideas, I'm soaking them all up (and loving this place for it's helpfulness). I'll have to look into those sets, since both D'Addario and GHS flats have produced sound that I really like, and I'd been told before that the ability to 'dial up' with rounds, whether for a solo or...

My worst soundguy experience (by now)

    A) I have nothing useful to say about your issue, so I should shut up... but... B) I'm watching all your videos and enjoying them all a lot, so I thought I should post to say so! So.. thanks to that sound guy for creating problems so that I get to learn about you and enjoy your music that I...

Is there a Yamaha BB club? There is now!

Thank you, I really like the color also! I'm rather new an inexperienced, so this may sound dumb, but here goes: I'm playing in a Country band, 60's-70's era, so I am trying for that older style, 'thumpy' sound that I think is the same as that 'P tone' you're asking about. I just got the bb435...

The futility of comparing yourself to other musicians

Just getting better - at whatever speed I can - is all I can do (or any of us really), and that's more than enough to make me happy. It's a never-ending ladder, which means we get to keep climbing as long as we want to and are (physically) able. I don't worry about others who climb faster, I'm...

    It's backyard gig season!!

Don't forget the tractor taking hayrides around you - it's louder than the band even before it got picked up by the mics  We've got two on the books - we need to charge more..

Gig report : first time ever; no rehearsal (long post)

Great report! Thanks for sharing the fun. I like the comment about appreciating the songs more now that you are playing them. I'm finding the same thing for myself - playing them gives me a new appreciation for songs I didn't care for previously.

Got new strings... Wrong string in the pack?

I just had this exact thing happen to me - same string and manufacturer (not through amazon though). I came here to see if it was common, doesn't seem to be, just that GHS had a bad day that day.

The opposite of the typical Band Management horror stories. Who's in a good band???

I'm also in the 'pinching myself to see if I'm dreaming' camp, although not as good as your delusion. I got pulled out of 'retirement' about a year ago to play with the neighbor's country band. He'd been hosting people as a hootenanny/open rehearsal/neighborhood potluck every Friday for decades...

    Story of a bass player

Necessity. Friend played guitar and wanted to start a band. I wanted to play keys, but all the decent synths at the store were too expensive for a 15-year-old. There was a nice cheap bass hanging there and I had played viola for years, so it made sense (sort of?). Don't regret it for a minute!

I'm one more whose first stringed instrument was fretless and orchestra-related and I'll add to to the "do it!" pile. It was a viola - cue the jokes...

    Unexpected NAD!

... And all I find on mu local CL is people trying to get $350 for a bass that retails for $200 new.:confused:o_O Maybe I should try pawnshops.

    Meanwhile in Finland

The first concert I ever went to was Ozzy shortly after Randy died... he looked almost as bad as this... but I agree that we owe Sharon for preventing a worse disaster.

Pleasently surprised by CL drummer search.

I prefer this piece from that same event: Yes, it's a tangent, sue me, idc, that link is truly sublime.

BassCliff w/ANB at Cowboy Country, 03/8-9/19(video added)

Oh my goodness. I've only been to your part of the USA maybe 3 times ever in 50+ years ... but on one of those occasions (circa 1990) I went to the 'Silver Bullet' as part of a friends bachelor party. There was a fair amount of drinking that night, so the memory is a bit foggy - but that...

    What happens to old basses?

That's nasty.... but my first bass spent 30 years under a bed in the guest room while I pretended I never played the thing... But to answer the question: they're 'aging in'

Did my first set-up. Went great. Thank you Talkbass!

Thanks all. I used the numbers and measurements from the John Carruthers videos. I have flats on the bass, so I was a little concerned that those numbers might not be ideal for flats, but I didn't plan to do anything drastic or irreversible (had the action at the first fret been off, I'd have...

Did my first set-up. Went great. Thank you Talkbass!

Thank you Talkbass, you guys are the best! After reading all the 'do your own set-ups, it's not that hard' comments here, I finally pulled on my big-boy pants and did it. I watched the vids in the sticky above (more than a few times, lol), bought some tools, and went for it. Turning...
