New Opus user here, I was wondering a couple of things if some of you might know:
1) is there some default mic choice/placement settings per speaker set up somewhere, or are the mic placements as one switches between different cabinets always chosen based on the settings of the previous cabinet (which is kind of arbitrary)?
I am happy to experiment in general, and it's one of the great things about the unit, but at the same time I feel I am starting from scratch every time I switch to a different cabinet because the mic settings that work well with one speaker may not make much sense with another.
2) Same question regarding amp and power amp pairings, is there some reference to the "ideal" or "closer to the real thing" pairing between each preamp model and poweramp configuration (ex: tube type and wether it's push/pull)
If there is not, could be a nice feature to be able to set defaults for those two things so one doesn't have to do so much tweaking when switching cabs or preamp model, as it would be nice to have a consistent starting point at least when choosing a cabinet
Are you planning to run the Opus strictly as a DI or run into an amp or both?
If DI only, it helps to have a decent pair of headphones.
If run into an amp or active speaker cabinet, set the amp preamp to closest to flat or if it has an FX Return, you can run the Opus into that, bypassing the preamp of your amp (which is how I usually use mine).
I generally like Presets based on one of the Preamp models combined with the Custom EQ (no Power Amp, no Enhancer, no Reverb, and no Cab Sim), but I have some Presets that use Preamp, Power Amp, and Cab Sim that I really like.
If you want to use a Cab Sim, start with that by itself and try each mic to see how they affect the tone.
I generally set the Mic placement to Front, Axis to 0%, and the Distance to 2%.
Whether you play a 4 or 5 string bass guitar affects where you set the HPF in the Custom EQ section, just go by ear and you can juggle the HPF with different settings on the lowest band of the EQ.
Tweak each band or not until you like the sound you're getting.
Fork: [Note: you don't have to use anything but the EQ is you want.]
If you've got your Cab Sim sounding decent or if you want to start with Preamp model only, try each one and see how they sound set flat.
Some of the High Gain Guitar Preamps won't really sound good with bass guitar unless you're going for a lot of overdrive or distortion.
You can also try it without a Preamp model and try out the Power Amp models (with or without Cab Sim).
I don't use any of the single-ended modes (I think those are more for guitars), but the Triode mode can add some heft to the low end of the tone - sometimes desirable, sometimes not).
To me the Contour and Depth settings are highly interactive, so they take some getting used to.
I like the Fender Showman or Fender Bassman kind of tone, so I have a lot of Presets that use the Foundry or Foundry Bass Preamp models, but I also use the Aviator, Peggy, Gemini, and Foxy Preamp models.
My current overall favorite uses the Foundry Preamp and the 6L6 Power Amp with no Cab Sim.
I like to try a Preset out while playing along with a variety of music as well, sometimes you'll think it sounds great until you start playing along with something and you'll find it doesn't quite work like you thought.
My favorite Cab Sims that I've added are the Standard Powerhouse 2x12 and the Standard Powerhouse 2x15.
You are almost sure to have more questions, so don't hesitate to ask.
