2013-14 NHL Regular Season Thread: Second Period

Yikes. Rough night for the Pens last night. Oh well haha. Feel like this team is a mystery going into the playoffs. They certainly have the potential to win the cup, but they could also exit the first round...

Where, when and band name Laz? I live in Hollidaysburg.

Band is Supervoid (deets are in my sig), show is April 19th and venue is called McGarvey's, which I believe is formerly Aldo's. I played there like 6 years ago when I was still attending Penn State. It's the place on that little main drag, with basically two separate rooms for the bar and stage.

Lol. It is McGarveys now yes. I grew up less than a mile from there. Been going to see bands there since I turned 21 ( that was 21 years ago). New owner is a great guy, pimping out the local music scene hardcore. I'll be there for sure.

Any other college hockey fans? The ECAC puts another team in the Frozen Four, Union College again. I remember watching them play Dartmouth. UC is currently the #1 team in the country. Frozen Four is next week in Philly.

madman4string.....you are obliged to consume a pint of Yuengling in my honor while attending this event. :D

Sadly, I'm not a Yuengling fan. But I will gladly consume a pint in your honor Mike.

Cool! No idea what the turnout will be like, but if we get to play in front of 10 people who have never seen us before, I don't complain :)

Who's on the bill with you?

Yeah, Big 10. Is that what it is, a conference? They were talking about it during the Minnesota games a couple of weeks ago. But it only has six schools in it. I don't know. I'm so confused. I tried looking it up & got even more confused. I always assumed winners of different conferences ultimately play in a national tournament like they do in the memorial cup, but I've never heard of a "Big ten" in hockey before. And a kewpie doll to anyone who can explain to me what an "at-large bid" is.

Like I said, I'm a complete dummy when it comes to American college athletics. But it's great hockey. I grew up watching a lot of Sioux games. There are quite a few Canadian hockey fans who don't have enough respect for American players, but I'm not one of them.

The Big 10 is an NCAA athletic conference, yes. It used to have 10 big schools, hence the name. That was awhile ago. Because football and basketball bring in the most money for the schools, the football and basketball programs more or less dictate which conferences schools are in. But, some schools are in one conference for football, and another for basketball. Some small schools have strong enough programs to compete at the high level at basketball (for example Duke, St. John's, etc) but not at the football level.

Also, as of the last 10 years or so, there has been a lot of conference changes with schools, with colleges always chasing the bigger dollar. Exclusive network television deals are a big part of this.

The Big 10 consists of teams like Penn State, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio State, etc. Not all of these teams have NCAA level hockey programs, hence there not even being 10 hockey schools in the Big 10.

For tournaments, an at-large bid is an invitation to the tournament. Some teams automatically qualify (winning your conference is a good way to automatically qualify), and then some are selected for the tournament based on their performance, strength of schedule, etc.

Hope that helps. The NCAA is confusing and bloated and needs trimmed, or axed. Money controls everything.

The Big Ten actually has 12 schools. But there was already a Big 12 conference.

The last few years it has really become a mess. The PAC 12 conference no longer has 12 teams.

At large bids also extend to independent schools. Notre Dame is an example. No conference, so in the Bowl games for football as an example, they can participate as an "at-large" school if they are not ranked for a BCS bowl.

Well the Wings beat the B's tonight 3-2, contributing to their playoff position. Why Babcock isn't a shoe in for coach of the year I have no idea. Half of the team is in the ICU. They lead the league in games lost to injuries, and they still are about to lock up another postseason spot.

It looks like Datsyuk is back in a couple of days, and Zetterburg claims he'll be ready to go if they make it to the second round of the playoff. I suspect no one wants to see them in the postseason. But this year, just getting there is quite an accomplishment. And Nyquist looks like a star in the making, 28 goals in 58 games including the game winner tonight. CBS sports is talking about him for the Hart trophy.

I'm actually amazed at Babcock's unwillingness to give up. It shows on the team. He doesn't let injuries become excuses. If nyquist can continue this craziness, I have a feeling red wings will make it to the playoffs and make it to third round. No one thought they could beat Anaheim last year let alone make it to the playoffs.

And yeah! Kings secured the playoffs again. Crazy domination of Phoenix.
