2014-2015 NHL Regular Season Thread

Look at the Predators, off to a fast start behind James Neal. :)

Game time tonight, finally. Flyers and Penguins in Pittsburgh. We'll see how many guys get their hair pulled and wrists hacked.

Well, how many is that now for Philly in Pittsburgh? 10 out of the last 12 I believe. It was a bummer to see Pittsburgh lose, but they played better than they have recently against the Flyers, and I was glad to see Ray Emery get the win.

James Neal with the hat trick, Nashville wins again to stay hot.

I wouldn't call myself a big fan of Chara, but it's a bummer when a key member of a good team goes down like that. But hey, the Bruins called up former Pen's first round pick (2011 entry draft) and Portland Winterhawk Joe Morrow. Time for him to shine. I have to say though, I disagree with Julien when he said there was no disappointment in the locker room when news spread about Chara.

Then we have the Pens, the disappointing Pens. Up by two with about three minutes left. Apparently the players must have assumed they had the game won. At least it looked that way by how they were playing. Detroit had other ideas, and kudo's to the Red Wings for putting the pressure on to tie it, then keep the momentum into OT and win the game.

People have this image that Boston is some invincible team. They can be beaten and the Isles showed us that.

They're gonna suffer without chara.

Absolutely and it is worse with Kevan Miller out with a dislocated shoulder. But as Claude says, if the team tanks when one guy goes down, that doesn't say much for your team. We'll find out if Bartkowski can raise his game and if the latest crop of rookie D-men (Morrow and Trotman) is as good as the last crop (Hamilton and Krug) and we'll find out if Hamilton, Krug and McQuade can pick up the slack (I have no doubt that Seidenberg will rise to the occasion).

Not many people around here thought that the B's would be invincible. The Bruins came into this season with better health (McQuaid and Seidenberg back and Bergeron healed up) but with less talent (no Boychuk or Iginla) than last years edition. The consensus was that they may still be the best team in the East, but they were not as good as the top teams in the West. The plan was to just get in the playoffs with a healthy team and hope for a hot streak. That's still the plan, but they are not a candidate for best in the East anymore and they will have a tougher time making the playoffs.

The Islanders played the Bruins tough last year and they improved themselves with adding Boychuk. I don't think they will win the Metropolitan but I do think they make the playoffs this year. They need to continue to improve to build up the buzz for next year when they move to the new arena in Brooklyn (which is still on Long Island so the name still works.)

It kills me to say this but if anyone wants to learn how to beat the Bruins, look at a Montreal game. They have speed, stout goaltending, and a knack for getting under the skin of the Bruins which leads to stupid penalties and embarrassing behavior on the part of the B's.

I believe Montreal has had Boston's number since the rivalry started. The overall W/L/T record between the Habs and Bruins is in favour of the Habs

True, except for 2010-11 when the Habs, for once, misplaced the number. :smug:

But lets not bicker and argue about who has who's number - this is a thread for this season and with Montreal on top of the Atlantic and with Calgary and Vancouver off to good starts - this could be the year that the Cup returns to hockey's ancestral home.

Montreal has the best chance out of any Canadian team to bring the Cup home right now. If Benning and Linden pull the right moves in the next few years and Willie proves to be an effective NHL coach and if the team is able to excel under his system, Vancouver comes a close second in bringing the Cup back home.

I was on the Toronto bandwagon for a couple of years and really felt they were heading in the right direction. Montreal fans who have seen that movie many, many times before have since convinced me of the folly of my ways. It is good to hear that Vancouver is trending up - my cousin moved there a few years ago and is a big fan. I visited him and his family this summer - the city lives up to the hype, we had a great time and the city and region are beautiful.

I wouldn't call 4-1 a blowout..that's almost normal. IDK. What do YOU guys think? What defines a blowout win/loss? 7-0? 8-2? 10-5? 4-0?

If you go by score alone, I'd say a 5 goal differential should do it - there is no way to put a happy face on 5 goals, even if the losing team hit a bunch of crossbars, got a bunch of bad calls and fluke goals against them. However, I watched most of the Toronto-Boston game and I would agree that the Leafs were worse than the score suggests. Especially with the Bruins not having Chara, the Leafs were probably figuring it was going to be a much easier game. Bruins scored a shorthanded goal, Toronto changed goaltenders, Bruins won faceoffs 41-27; Leafs scored their goal in the 3rd after the B's were up 4-0. I couldn't find stats on scoring chances or time of possession but it seemed like those were tilted to Boston. It wasn't like Rask had to stand on his head or the Bruins were getting a lot of goals on deflections, or the Leafs were ringing the posts all night, the Leafs lost one-on-one battles and made some bad decisions and the Bruins were way better at finishing than they have been so far.

Thanks to the Pens, there are now no teams undefeated in regulation. Crosby wasn't about to let James Neal beat them. Good defense all night from the Pens, but the Predators failed to take away space, adds up to a Pens victory.
