I am selling off my Super Nintendo and in return I will be able to purchase a set of Thomastik Spirocore Starks.

To not come into temptation, all other string sets will leave the house.

Currently the large 4/4 bass with a string length of approximately 111 centimeters is strung with Thomastik Spirocore Mittels.

I would NEVER EVER spend a year with starks on such a big bass!!!
You are a manly man!

Burning your ships at the shore, I respect that!

Invitations to join the challenge will stay open until the ball drops on the east coast.

If 5 people commit, I will too.

Then all 6 of you 'can BE COMMITTED'.

Sorry, but the 'Gear Junkie' could never submit to such harsh conditions (Plus, I am enjoying my Perpetuals too much).

I think it depends on your bass.

I've been going back and forth bewteen Perps and various Spirocores. I feel that 3885 Weichs are the closest to Perps in tension and for me, they bow at least as well.
I need to change my strings. I like my perps. However, I am intrigued. I know this subject is covered extensively but, weichs or mittels bow better. I may do this….

I’m out of the challenge cuz I did that with perpetuals 2 years ago and only changed cuz the stark dg were sent to me…

I WILL SAY I think part of the challenge needs to change. You CAN NOT experiment with different spiros. I think the goal is to be committed to a string/setup ie spiros. When I was doing the spiros I would tinker when I was board with different gauges. A stark E, 3/4 vs 4/4 etc.

I think you should have an idea of what your bass likes tension wise by now or what you like, and take the year and COMMIT to just that set. Only reason to take the string off all year is if one breaks or you have work done.

I’m not joining but I think that makes it a better challenge

Personally, I could live with that, but I came to 3885 weichs from S42 Mittel and Weich and even solos. There are more gauges of Spirocore than any other string and I think for picky basses (like mine) finding the right gauge is the key to really giving Spirocores a fair chance. I didn't want to box anyone in.

I need to reserve the right to replace my set with a fresh set. There's a possibility that I have a bad G string that I haven't ruled out yet. But if a soundpost adjustment fixes it, I prefer starting the year with a well-cooked set.

Just finished playing for a while and I’m leaning toward higher tension, louder (?) strings. But the arco equation perplexes.

If your bass speaks better under tension, then S42 Mittel are the easy choice. Arco issues with Spirocores are generally thought to be overstated for non-section players. I would GUESS that the right set for your bass would probably be the right set for your bass, whether arco or pizz, but it's a guess.

The s42 Mittel G-String is GLORIOUS on my bass, arco and pizz. But the full set stresses my bass out in ways that make me uncomfortable.
