May I join this epic contest?

After 14 years on gut strings, existential boredom and the financial pressures of multiple lock-downs led to the installation of a full set of mittel Spirocore Red Mitchells on my bass a few months ago...

Half-expecting some loss of sense of self, I've been pleasantly surprised to discover a more audible fundamental with great sustain and volume.

Ha!

Mr. Fitzgerald, for, approximately, how long was your stint with the Starks?

P.S. Love "From The Hip"!
P.P.S. Ladies & Gentlemen, as of present I cannot justify purchasing a set of Starks, but am more than willing to continue the journey with a set of Mittels.

It was maybe 2 years? Not sure, but that's definitely the Starks on "From The Hip", which would have been about 2005.

I’m curious what specifically was rough?

I may have a bad G string and it may be falsing. I thought that before about this set, but made some adjustments and got over it. It sounded really wolf-y and I couldn't hear the pitch very cleanly on that string, even though I futzed with making sure it was in tune all night. It might be correctable with a soundpost adjustment, but it's unique to these strings.

If it was the E, I would replace it with a fresh one, but I don't think I could put a new G on there with a well burned in E-D. It would stand out too much.

Definitely a trip to the luthier. If Jake was within reach for me right now, it would have happened already, but there are other great options for a checkup and soundpost adjustment.

I hate the idea of a brand new set of Spirocores, but probably if I were going to a luthier, I should have them install a fresh set while they're at it.

Quartet gig in a decent sized venue tonight, so we'll see how I feel afterwards.

I really don't like this, but I think that if I'm going to give this a fair chance I'm going to need a fresh set of Spirocores. I love how dark the old set I'm using is, but they're missing some of the goods.

If you put in a fresh set you’ll have to bow them for six months to just break them in. That’ll take you halfway through the challenge…

I think it's really ugly only in the living room with fresh set. In the mix all that twang comes out more as clarity IME, but I really don't know how it is with a piezo and an amp. I still have a Lifeline hanging from the bridge, but only use it once a year or so.
