Well, by calling them "con-artists," you are absolutely inferring that they do not have a right to list THEIR stuff at stupid prices. You have made a judgement that doing this is in someway illegal, I have no idea how you could get so bent out of shape over this non-issue, who cares...
TL;DR : Reverb has a bunch of overpriced crap that sits for eternity from delusional sellers...wait are you sure we aren't talking about the classifieds here as well?
I have been always fascinated by the stars and their complex influence on the human brain but these kind of super intelligent threads excite me even more than that.

I did. It was for pickups though. Fralins and EMGs for about half off.
eBay has a ratings system too.
There have even been outright frauds perpetrated here in the name of charity, totally transparently obvious yet sucked in a lot of people including some mods.
There have been sellers with 100% positive feedback and when one person posts a complaint thread many come out of the woodwork to say they were jerked around or ripped off by that person too but didn't leave negative feedback for whatever lame excuse.
There've been sellers that put knock-off parts on name-brand instruments then sell the original parts separately. Some notice too late and are too ashamed to leave negative feedback, and some never notice at all. Is your EBMM Stingray preamp legit, or did the guy who solid you the bass swap it for the preamp in his SBMM Ray34 that he still owns?
Buyer beware. The vast majority of people are trustworthy, or try their best to be. Some aren't. If you deal often enough you'll eventually get burned to some degree.
If you don't have a great BS radar, life's tough and you will eventually be taken advantage of. Proceed accordingly.

I'm with the OP on this one. If you really don't want to part with the gear you're selling then don't sell it. Posting adds to sell used gear at what is essentially new cost is just clogging up websites and making it harder for people to find sellers that actually want to sell stuff. This is exactly why I stopped paying for a paid membership to talkbass. I don't have all day to scroll through the classifieds looking for someone who actually wants to sell stuff.
Or just don't buy the item. whining about what someone charges isn't going to lower the price. 40%...this isn't guitar center. If you don't like it, buy new and move on. Seems like folks always want something for nothing. Reverb for the most part is in the right ballpark, eBay has always been a joke.
I've always found good stuff on here and at decent prices, used doesn't mean automatic mark down, you're not car shopping. I get the drift that some folks are the chronic lowballs that don't like to pay the going price for things...nothing wrong with haggling but 40%...that's just insulting.

I fail to see the difference honestly. Just like a new car, the moment you leave GC with a new piece of gear, the value of that gear drops drastically. Why should anyone pay 90% of a new price for a piece of gear second hand without warranty or any guarentee that it wasn't F'ed with in some major way that you won't find out about until way later(truss rod issues, electronics, etc). When I buy a used piece of gear I think about all factors that go into it, including what I'd be able to sell it for down the road if I wanted to. You can call that chronic "lowballing" I guess, but some of us have limited gear resources and have to anticipate what something can really fetch(remember, a lot of musicians are broke cheapskates)
I'm sorry but your "mint" MIA P bass that you got off MF 46 days ago is not worth $1200. I can't even get a bite at my EBMM stingray that I have listed in my towns local classifieds, listed at $800. A few years ago I paid almost 1400 for it. I'm not crying about the "lowballers" who offer me 500 for it. Fortunately I'm not super desperate to sell it that low, but I'm ready to take a hit on it and not get overly butthurt.
Well, if you want to get technical, your observations were that you see people listing at an absurd fee, getting a lowball offer, then meeting in the middle. Your opinion based off those observations is 'that is the way the market works.'

If buyers are too cowed to report bad deals, then I guess there isn't much point in a rating system. Perhaps I've just been lucky.
The things that bug me about the secondary market: 1) Sellers do not know the real market value of their gear and often price it too low. 2) They become impatient or desperate when it doesn't sell within 2 weeks. Properly priced gear can take time to sell.
