$67 Glarry P-Bass

Yes. In reviewing his pictures, mine is the same.

Well I’m sorry to hear that but on the other hand it IS still playable if you can handle the neck heaviness/dive

Just be sure you take extra care on the intonation and pick up adjustment

failing that just cut into the neck to form an overhang for the extra fret; redrill the neck heel; redrill the bridg and move it further back AND Consider putting the neck on eBay and buying a replacement one from there too!

This thread has really resparked my interest in my Glarry (which has been sitting on its stand in my dad's family room for almost 2 years).

Mine is super solid and a great platform in build quality. By that I mean the wood is all there, neck is straight, no off frets or wierd angles, everything is as tight and clean as could be for the price.

Once I get the new harness in my Bronco, I'm going to take the Bronco harness and swap it into the Glarry...along with the 8.2k Alnico5 pickups I've had in my parts box for a few years.

I've been waiting for the right time to change electronics because that's it's only fault, IMO.

I may change the tuners later also. I noticed they liked to bind/grind like cheap cast metal. But I'll only swap them if they give me more trouble.

Also...and I'm really not trying to sell anything here. I'll give the thing away for a song if shipping is reasonable.

But through Suntek store or Kmise on Amazon I found a pre-wired loaded pickguard in black. Mine is white on white. I thought at the time the different loaded pickguard had a different electronic setup. But it's not. So I have a black pickguard that should fit perfect if anyone wants it.

Or if you want to purchase one yourself.

TBH I’ve got a project brewing that would need a black plate for my Glarry but I’m in the UK and I’m guessing you’re not…?

First of all those tunerz are really good if they’re anything like the ones on my half-assed Glarry! What mine DID need, though, was a bit of grease (not oil!) they’re just assembled dry so they WILL grind -maybe check that first?

I’m thinking along the same lines as you with my Glarry so, FWIW, here’s My plan too:

If the seller genuinely refunds me over $30 as he’s promised (it would be good of him/her but I’m not holding my breath…!) Then I’ll take the neck off; put it on eBay for whatever I can get and use the money to buy a better Chinese one which tend to go for around $40 give or take, here on UK eBay.

I might go for a maple fretboard option?

I have many pickups knocking around -far too many- &the base ones get used the least (maybe I should have a big eBay clear out?!) I distinctly remember having a guild thin soapbar/jazz-a-like for many years that’s never been used and a similarly vintage output but quality split P set that look anything but vintage which I got brand-new last year boxed for 10 quid off eBay just because
They have the name “Newton“ printed on them and I think I got them from Wales? I’d love to know more about them but remember drawing a blank back then

Both These low output traditional things could sound good together but I’ve also got a Dimarzio J split pick up set somewhere that I’ve always wanted to use if I had the opportunity

One thing I’ve definitely wanted to do is my own blend type cotrol using resistors and this would be a perfect opportunity as I don’t have a P/J type bass

There was a local guy selling a couple of Glarry P-basses last month on CL for $100 each. Interesting side hustle. If you never researched them $100 might seem like a great deal to someone.

I bought a $50 (shipping included) unbranded Stratocaster copy just to see what you could get for that price. It was actually really decent. Flipped it to a guy for his kid for exactly what I paid. They were ecstatic about it.

I got an unbranded P-bass for around $70 that was a complete mess that got sent back for a refund. Pickups weren't even close to lining up with the strings, tuning machines were installed crooked, big gap in the neck pocket.

Quality control is a kind of a crap shoot on this stuff. Maybe it's based on what the Oompa Loompas drink or smoke on their lunch break. It ain't easy being orange.

For the price and considering Amazon and eBay's return policies it's not much of a risky gamble.

These are very tempting...almost SX Rondo Music-like, but even cheaper. Due to the parts misalignment posts in this thread, I would buy an unassembled kit so I can drill my own holes and get things positioned correctly.

That escaleta they have for sale for $20 is tempting, too.

The pick up is off-centre too
& the sturdy, well chromed machine heads, whilst comparable in quality to the bridge, are fitted so that the last one (in this case the G) overhangs enough to be visible from the front !
That's ridiculous even for $70. I can't imagine how one could call themselves a bass manufacturer and place a tuner off by that much. That is very basic stuff. I would think they would invest in simple fixturing or alignment tools to ensure proper alignment of the basic parts of the bass.

If your Glarry basses are anything like the kit I bought then the fretboard is not rosewood but very thin strips of of wood glued together. My guess is that it is dyed to look like rosewood and not strips of the real thing.

Can anyone with a Glarry have a very close look and see if their fretboard is the same.

Just checked my brace of Glarrys. Whatever wood the fingerboard is made of, on mine it is one solid piece.

All right. I admit it. I couldn’t leave well enough alone.

I modded my Glarry P-Bass.

I couldn’t live with the white pickguard. So, I went on Amazon and bought a tort pickguard for under $12.

While I was there, I saw Fender Original P-Bass pickups for $65 shipped. And I also saw a wiring kit with CTS pots, Orange Drop cap, Switchcraft jack and push-back wire for under $15. So I bought it all.

It all arrived last week. I started to work, but there were issues:
- The pickguard was cut to fit a Fender MIM. It needed to have the neck cutout trimmed. No big deal.
- The control panel route would not accommodate 24mm CTS pots. This was a big deal. I wasn’t going to route the control cavity.

So, back to Amazon, where I found 250k audio mini pots (14mm) with solid shafts by Bourns - at $10 each. They were ordered, and arrived in two shipments on Friday and today, Sunday. While waiting for the pots to arrive, I whittled the pickguard’s neck pocket and fitted it. None of the screw holes lined up,and two of the pickguard holes were over the control cavity route near the jack. Grrr! I was able to run a longer screw at an angle to secure the pickguard and jack, so a workaround was found.

Soldered up everything, located the pickup in the pickguard and body cavity pretty easily and tested. Got sound and control response - yes! Buttoned it all up, set the action a little lower and re-intonated, and sat down with my jam buddy Paul to play for awhile.

The Fender Original pickups sounded more dynamically responsive and articulate, and were somewhat more powerful overall. Was it worth it? On balance, yes... but I couldn’t stand the look of the white pickguard, so that prompted the project. If I liked the stock pickguard, I could have easily swapped the pickup, kept the stock electronics, and been happy with the improvement. But I like the look of a vintage Fender. See the pic.
