I just found this thread and figured I should weigh in.

2000 55-94 Deluxe
Maroon quilt
Fretless with rosewood fretboard and fretlines.
Bartolini pickups
I have never touched the dipswitch, so whatever the factory default is.
I always play active, and adjust the pickups and EQ for the sound I need. I don't ever touch the tone on my head.
I actually use the regular Lakland roundwound strings and like them just fine. I may order a set of flatwounds next time around just to see what they sound like.

I bought this bass from Bass Central in 2001, and absolutely love it. If I ever buy another bass in my lifetime it will be another 55-94 deluxe fretless as a backup.

(My first post) I got my 55-01 from a guy on bassworld.co.uk who had bought it of another guy who had it off another guy. My bass had changed hands a good few times before it found its permanent home with me.

I haven't got any close-up shots of it at the moment but it's a CAR 55-01 with maple fingerboard and NTMB pre-amp.

My other basses are a 2001 US Fender Jazz Deluxe FMT with Badass II (roundwound Sadowsky) and a CIJ Fender Aerodyne Jazz with a Fralin P/J set (Flatwound D'addario).

When I turned up for rehearsal with my 55-01, the drummer wouldn't shut up about it. He said that for the first time in 30 years of drumming he's finally got the bass sound he wanted to hear. Sometimes I take the Jazz with Fralins and he instantly comes back with, "Hey, we're not in the 1960s. Where's that red thing?".

This is my first Lakland and also my first 5-string. If I ever buy another I know it'll be a Lakland. I wonder if they'll do a double MM config one day?? They could call them 44-03 and 55-03. There you go Dan Lakin, get busy fella!!! ;-) Get in touch and I'll give you an order.

I used to have one identical to that one, but since I wasn't playing 5 string anymore it didn't get played. I traded it for a Skyline JO4, which is my main bass. It is also CAR/maple.

In my tonequest I was researching the Danelectro-lipstick p/u sound. I came across some sound files and heard the Lakland Jerry Scheff. I was always interested in the Lakland rep, and then one magically appeared on ebay. Brand new Skyline Scheff in Shoreline Gold. I love everything about it from the look, to the comfort, to the tones. The p/u's are spaced farther apart, closer to neck and bridge (like a Dan-o) and just moving the right hand gives a lot of variationsin tone. I'm using Ken Smith Steel Slicks on this now, the Lakland rounds sounded great but the whole thing started with the need for the right thump. These are discontinued in the Skyline series, poor sales due to fear of those little chrome p/u's. I personally love 'em, even active they don't have a hint of 'Hi-Fi'. they're real organic sounding.

Long story short, I drove down to Chicago to have some fretwork done and their sales rep asked me if I would be interestsed in Dan Lakins' personal instrument, a USA fretless deluxe Scheff JS#10. The right place at the right time...The neck is incredibly slim and responsive, this bass is LIVE. TI Flats on this one for sure.

Disclaimer- I am not a schill for Lakland infiltrating TalkBass. I am an endorser now, but wasn't at the time. Please don't send the bass police after me, I just saw the thread, ok?

Isn't Lakland's CAR just stunning? It's the best looking CAR I've ever seen on any bass, period.

Boomer is my 2003 55-01 Skyline in Cherryburst with rosewood fretboard. I bought it from Clubbass in Toronto.

It has the standard MIK P-ups and preamp. I've corresponded with Lakland and while they indicate that the NTMB is a fine upgrade, they don't recommend upgrading the MIK Barts, saying that they're pretty good.

Too bad the Cherryburst is discontinued, it's what attracted me to this one right away. There was a Cherryburst maple fretboard which I played in the store, but the rosewood had that rounder, more balanced across the strings tone that made me walk out with it under my arm. Not likely to part with it unless I pick up a 55-94 one day.

Hey, how do the Nordy's sound in passive mode?? I have a new 55-01 I took the preamp out of and went passive all the way with the stock Bartolini Mk-1, sounds pretty good. Much better then it did with the crappy Korean preamp it came with. Anyway, just thinking of upgrading possibly to some good passive pup's.

My 55-02: strung with DA XL170 nickel rounds...it's still "a little darker" than you'd expect, and I may upgrade to the new Lakkie pups and pre...it covers a lot of sonic ground!
Hollowbody: strung with LaBella 760FL flats. It sounds huge, woody, old school. Put stainless rounds on it and it changes completely! With the switchable humbuckers in there it too has quite a few great usable tones.

Hey Bill; how deep is that neck pup solo'd?
I really like the pup placement on this bass: bridge pup not too close to the bridge as to make it "Jaco only-ish," neck pup nicely on towards the neck to help thicken that up too.
