Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Thanks for that. The Balkengs looks awesome - I'm all about interesting, unusual pedals!

But don't tell me I missed the boat on granular delay! Crap!!! just kidding, of course I did! Actually, the thing that got me into it was a really long reverb tail on a track from the first post-Edgar Froese Tangerine Dream album. That's partly why I got the Maneco Drone Grone, because it has Clouds built in. But it's not easy to use - and the Mood might allow for a more plug & play interface.

Realizing also that I don't have access to a lot of stuff because I don't have a contemporary DAW - my ProTools is from 2012 at the latest lol.

You can always use a trial of Reaper and buy it if you end up having use for it. It's very reasonably priced but you can use in trial mode as long as you like to decide. I think it even has a ProTools skin. Most of my friends have switched over to it.

I have no experience with the Core but Boss pedals work great. It's just if you are ok with the programming interface, etc. You could definitely do ambient with it.

Yeah know they've had issues and its a rocky road ahead, that being said it's still a very cool unit with a very passionate community. It appeals to the geeky side, possibly even dabbling with writing some modules for it. Even if they went under and stopped production now its a pretty remarkable unit with a pretty endless potential. It's definitely a concern though.

The GT1000core is a great bit of kit, I'm actually one of the few people who really liked the onboard interface for it. Found it way faster to edit than the touch screen alternatives out there.

My only issue with the Core is that a lot of the effects felt a little more safe, dare I say dad rock oriented. That being said the parallel processing opens a lot of doors to creating interesting stuff, just not quite on the level of the Dwarf.

Has anyone here ever used two distortion pedals in parallel for stereo distortion? For re-amping stereo tracks mostly.
I was thinking maybe a cheap pair of Mosky Rat clones or something.
Or two different ones in mid/side mode?

I have, with 2 Dr Scientist Element pedals. Used with the stereo out on my sampler.
I you want to achieve this, you need to be sure the dirt pedal used can run at Line level or Mic level depending on the output of the tool you are using. Some outs on sound cards are line level and some are Mic, most are line, so look it up before you buy anything. Or buy a reamp box, well stereo reamp box I guess….

I have a reamp box but rarely use it unless the pedal is mad picky
I use reainsert in Reaper and can adjust the send and return volume that way.

What were the results like?
Would it be good enough for recording or too noisy?

Too many variables and unknowns about your project to venture a guess be it positive or negative.
Especially if you ask about “noise”
Noise floor desired before and after said process??
Hiss??
Hum???
60 cycle hum??
Electrical/radio interference??
Impedance mismatches??
Line/mic/instrument level issues??
Noise floor of source track??
Hardware noise?
Cross talk inside hardware??
Phase issues between L and R channels?
Does the hardware flip the phase (dirt pedals sometimes do this)
Bad cables and wiring?
etc……

just try it mono with your reamp and pedal of choice, should be a good first experiment

I’ve got a stereo distortion box (it is also a comp/gate/filter). I haven’t tried running two pedals on a stereo signal.

I've tried it with a few dirt boxes I have here at hand and the best, unsurprisingly enough, is a Barbershop OD. Also it’s a DIY one I built which I don’t fancy building again.
Though a very close second was this little beaut which can be had for €20 give or take. A Timmy knock off. Rubber banding the levels will be impossible with that layout though!

I will try mid/side process it with the Barbershop and Mosky.

I might just order another one of these and wait it out. It’s obviously a transparent OD I’m after anyway.

Nobel OD, Darkglass Vintage, and a Triple Wreck clone didn’t do it for me.

EDIT:

Tried the two in Mid/Side roughly through the master bus. I actually like it as a full on thing. I can automate the levels blend within the DAW too. I'd like it for sporadically inserting it on a drum bus etc. It would need compression.

It's coming in and out on the full mix here. Starts without

A couple shots from tonight’s 2-set gig with the dad band. The new board is much smaller and simpler with the h90 which sounds great. And that’s a good thing because the stage was tiny for a 6 personal band. Just to the right of the photo was a whole keyboard rig and another pedalboard and mic. It’s also my first multi-set performance where it was all pick playing. I wouldn’t have been able to pull that off in December.

Hey, so I'm not the only one on TB who has a Flite Sound cab!

Good eye! I got mine from the original owner in a custom dark blue in the 1990s after messing up my back hauling Peavey gear. The speakers have been replaced and the tweeter is permanently off. It offgassed for a long time after I got it and it still sort of remember the smell. Oddly the Barefaced is still lighter.

2008 I think, with a 1.5” nut, so truly “a jazz bass for people who like P basses,” and on the light side for a L2K. I bought it around 2013 here in the classifieds. Hated the colour until I loved it (because others loved it). It has a few more marks from use now than when I bought it. They don’t show though because of the colour.

Does it have the “split in half then glued back together” neck?
I forget what year they stopped doing that, mine is like that and the neck could be used as a tire aid.
