Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

There are some people who talk about how they just hang on niche threads, such as this one. I think to myself it is kinda extreme, but sometimes there are nonsense posts that make me want to do the same:

the other thing is to find someone who can let the drum machine do its thing and be more of an embellisher. if someone is into being more of an orchestral force in the groove, it could really work out.

That’s the tricky part! I tried to start a project a few years back with drum machine being at the forefront, two drummers, two bass players, one guitarist. It was at least as big a mess as you might be imagining :) Sounded great in my head...

that’s dense!

i’d go half on that cause i want everyone to have space.

that was the problem...no one would leave any space. I thought it would/could be cool to have all those different colors and intentions, but I stressed the importance of being very minimal and leaving space. They just couldn’t do it.

yep. all those colors just become brown.

i’ve trios where people can’t shut up. ugh.
+110101i3`029384 to that. Worst was school jazz ensembles where people would noodle when the teacher was talking. Once just unplugged the Big Band guitarist.

“Now you can pratice the parts you screwed up last take” (he had to play complimentary top voicings to the brass section. )

Yes....we had recorded practice sessions sometimes.....instant humble button on!!!!

OUCH!!!!!!!

That second part is a screenshot of an example of nonsense that makes me want to give up talkbass except for niche threads (I just edited the post, cutting a larger part of the page to make it easier to see it was a screenshot)
Choose threads wisely! I spend most of my TB time here, the fretless page, the big pedal page, and love to check in with the daily trending post written by an amateur about some soap opera or bar band stuff I dealt with 30 years ago, then all the pros chime in, then the amateurs... etc. It gets entertaining, happens every day.

Yep. Pop corn cab time!!

(Inside joke from another one of "those" threads)

Funny you mentioned the fretless pages, been thinking about to dive back into the fretless deep end again.....wow those are hard to get around on.
I had an “easier” time on upright....please exclude high thumb position and arco.....

Jeezzzz....i can barely get by on a regular 4 string.....

Edit: I also find the “pedalboard” thread a gas, as in entertaining not G.A.S.... huge monster boards squeaky clean, can’t see one cable or power supply no dust.......never gigged. Pure awesome. And the Broughton dudes who get up a 4 am to smash the refresh button to get stuff online.....MORE POP CORN PLEASE!!!

To each there own I guess. Who am I to say.....that’s right,,,,,,Ima nobody.

:)

I always remain gobsmacked at the boards on that thread, yet very seldom do I hear any music being made on them. I've got well over 3k into my 10 pedal board, some of those must be upwards of 20k.

I EFFING LOVE FRETLESS. Have for a long time, and much to my surprise, my intonation doesn't suck. I know this because several musicians I trust and respect told me so (plus, of course, my own damn ears). I recently joined a trio, a singer songwriter thing (not folk, though). Not usually my cup of tea, but I switched from the 6 string to the fretless, and took on a more melodic approach than usual, and I'm loving it. Here's my baby...Alder body, dalmatian ebony fb, grafted walnut top (click on the photo to see better detail). Really sings.

Ya...my ultimate ball buster was sight reading on fretless......i dunno about you but......it was almost impossible for me.

Awesome piece of wood right there. Im looking at some of my bass' with some plyers right now ready to be the horror movie bass dentist.

And yes...20k pedalboard....no music.....hmmmmmm.....i rest my case.
