Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

I just had a discussion with my ambient project collaborator, and I’m stepping away from the gig for a while. She found another musician and wants to push for a touring schedule and up the promotion efforts. I’m just not ready for that right now, at any level. I just want to make weird noises in my home studio and my personal enjoyment.

Overall, the call went well and nobody was really shocked by anything said, and the door is still open for me to come back to active duty.

We had a personal blow-up last summer, and it sucked the fun out of the project. It’s started to heal, but it’s changed our friendship.

On top of that, it has been almost 4 years of gigs, so maybe it was time for a change. My physical pain and injury issues from last year also took the wind out of my sails. Layer on that I also started a new job last year, and I’m hiring and training a new employee for that job this year...
My tank is just empty. I think you’d be hard pressed to find another middle-aged recovering quadriplegic who would see things differently ;)

wow, you really made that pedal sound great. I didn't get along with it and threw it back shortly after getting it. I don't know what I was expecting, but I wanted more expression control.

Preliminary Terminal test.

Bass into DA120 as a preamp into Terminal 1 input. Terminal 1 output patched to Terminal 2 input. Terminal 2 output to mixer. Terminal 2 FX loop is now open for business. I can insert loopers and or delay and modulation effects.

Terminal 1 FX Out (copies input signal from 1) is patched to my Wizard fuzz and cab sim, which then patch to Terminal Input 4. Terminal Out 4 goes to the mixer, and the Terminal 4 FX loop is open for business.

So my bass now has a clean (DA120) signal and a fuzz (Wizard) signal going to their own mixer channels. The clean and fuzz channels can each have effects patched in they own independently FX loops.

The biggest “weakness” is that the clean and fuzz signals can’t both go through the Cab Sim at the same time, because I’ve split the signal into two channels. I suppose I could get a Wizard with a clean blend built in...
Actually, I like the sound I’m getting.

It isn’t super obvious here, but I’m attaching a pic to help visualize this routing.

Same here, gonna start noise experimental project alone. Different reasons, scene here is dead, collaborators for such a thing are pretty much nonexistent here. So....off I go.

Soundcloud big time here I come, face tats and all.

I pulled my tc electronics Ditto pedal out for the first time since a trio performance a month ago, and this was still captured in its memory:

I have no recollection of what the musical context was, nor how I generated those sounds (other than to note that this was accomplished with my Modulus 6-string bass running through both the large and small pedalboards). Happy Accident indeed.

Wanted to make a quick post - I've been following this thread for a while (at least a year?) but never posted. Thank you for turning me on to Squarepusher - watched the interview from the BBC posted several pages back, randomly grabbed a CD (Budakhan Mindphone) and became obsessed with Iambic 5 Poetry. Also got turned on to Carbon Based Lifeforms.

Most of my music is bass, drums & analog synths. I got into Moog stuff about 18 years ago, never really got beyond monophonic Moog. Would love to be able to do something combining just bass & electronics so that I wouldn't need a drummer, but still haven't made it happen - partly why I keep an eye out here! I was trying to think of any recordings I have to share here that fit the topic, and this is the only thing I came up with - I did a remix for a French noise band called .cut - never heard the original, just the individual tracks they provided for the remix. The Soundcloud page has a link to the remix album on Bandcamp if you want to listen to some of the other reimaginings:

Throwing more stuff out there... this is probably not your cup of tea if you're into the dissonant/noise stuff, but I am soooo into Alpha Wave Movement. More in the classic ambient/psybient realm. I love most of his releases, in particularly this one:


And, back to pedalboards, I'm assuming you all know about Stratosphere....

If you're into texture, these two are absolutely amazing. Make sure you check out Stratosphere's Rise album, if nothing else. He uses guitar and bass. Great music for thinking, if you're into thinking.

Chop up that thing and put it through your Euro Rack , I think finding such surprises little gifts for creating more!!!!

I think it”s freakin dope.
