Back in the early 90s I had a buddy who used the dial-up modem software on his PC to auto-dial anyone who pissed him off, and keep re-dialing every 15 seconds. After setting it in motion he'd get up and go out to Pizza Hut for an hour. No caller ID back then so no way to trace it back. Fully automatic prank call machine.

Back when you could fax someone a long series of pages taped together into a loop and just let it send until you filled their machine.

Nearly 2 decades ago, I had an epic chain of technology failures that resulted in my loss of contacts (backup after backup after backup after backup on about 6 different mediums sequentially failed in such a short time-frame I could not make a hard-copy — Twas like a virtual Titanic Rolodex sinking, "it's okay, I've got another backup — it's unsinkable". It happened long ago, but scarred ... "MAYDAY MAYDAY..."

Latest techno-fiasco? Yesterday I discovered the new phone gifted to me has wiped out my computer's calendar, and I no longer have my repeating events (birthdays, anniversaries etc), the calendar has been wiped clean and won't let me make new events. I looked online for WTFUDGSICLE happened and a solution and I'm not alone. The only way to get them back is to accept the iNumbness Zerostatus...

It is a company's way of saying nee forcing enforcing and reinforcing "conform, use all of and only Ahpful technologies" Well guess what Money-Apple, not to get into too much detail, but...

@Feral Feline right there with you. At times bad software and telecoms companies have made me angrier than the Big C.

I am also nostalgic for the golden era of prank calling. I had a particular friend who was exceptionally good at it. We'd be up at 3am and he'd phone people and be extremely friendly. Like "so, what are some of your hobbies?" One time, someone prank called me while he was there (perhaps not calculating that I was already up in the middle of the night), and I put it on speaker and let my friend take over. By the end of it the prank caller hung up. That friend was a virtuoso.

Yep, some people are vistuoso of conversation.
Had a good buddy from Belgium, he was soooooo good. He could slap back insults to stupid\ignorant\impolite people right to their face without them realizing it.
It was pure magic.
Miss that dude, he moved back to Europe to see his dying father and never came back.

Once when I was in college I used to get calls from telemarketers when I was alone in my apartment. One day a guy called me trying to talk me into a magazine subscription, and I was folding laundry and had some time to kill so I decided to have some fun. I had this guy going for almost a half hour, he was telling me about the weather, his family, his dog, really convinced he had me on a hook and that I'd hand over my payment info any minute. Then I finished folding laundry and said to the guy, "Well, it was nice catching up, gotta go now, see ya!" and hung up the phone. I can still feel the anger waves he transmitted telepathically in that moment. I almost feel bad for him; unlike today's telemarketers, he might not have been scamming me, just trying to sell magazines.

Just got the GHS strings that I ordered to tune my 6 string E to F. It's like a completely different instrument. I am so crazy excited about learning this tuning, and composing with it. Also, I had forgotten that I went with GHS Boomers because I like the strings, but mostly because they have a WOUND .20 for the high F string. Man...what a HUGE difference from the unwound steel string that I had tried many years ago. I also went with the unltra light set (.40 - .95), with a .30 C and the .20 F. Really, really happy with that choice. Gives me the lower tension that I was looking for.....Also...this is REALLY making me want a 30" scale 6 string to keep strung like this. Oh boy.....

Yeah. My 6 string endeavor if gonna be short.
Flashback to 20 years ago. I have a really hard time reaching the low C - Dd and D.
Makes my wrist warp at a weird angle.
My thumb doesn't bend at the first articulation since the tendon isn't cut.

It makes zero changes in life except playing a bass low (on a strap) is impossible and the low notes on a 6er hurt my wirst to play.

That's why you guys are manly men that play huge coffee tables.

So you went from flats to rounds? I've got a Music Man Silhouette Six (almost 30" scale) that I loved but I've got Kaliums on it which are pretty painful to play for me now. I would tune it E-E or E-F depending. I have a set of flats coming for it -- and tapes for some other basses -- as I recently discovered very smooth strings are MUCH less painful for me.

Scorching hot tip for extended range: one thing I learned about plain steels from touch guitar: you actually want much lower tension than you think you do. For instance the G string in the GHS piccolo set is WAY too big for good expressive playing. The lower D string on the touch guitar (same note as the 7th fret on the G string of a 4-string bass), is .016" and 34" scale and very sweet sounding tuned to pitch, especially as you get up the neck.

I couldn't find a flatwound string for this scale length for a high F tuning. Went with rounds. Sounds GREAT.
