Question for my 6 string buds, now that you've all been outed.

Do any of you play chord melodies on your six? You know when you listen to solo jazz guitar like Wes Montgomery or Joe Pass, and they play the whole damn thing, chords, with the melody over the top?

I'm trying to do this, but I could really use some help, wondering if any of you ever did this, made some charts/excercises, etc. I'm still working on chord progressions.

I remember starting it and thinking it couldn’t be anything I’d be interested in, but it just keeps turning up the intensity until you can’t turn away.
Speaking of things I can't turn away from, whenever I'm listening to any of my tracks on Soundcloud, your excellent "Fretless Echos" always plays, right after, for some reason. Another form of stalking, perhaps?

okay. the longer answer.

it’s not something i am interested in doing.

i do like playing broken chords with passing notes, etc., through standards. but not the pass chord melody thing.

the guy who i know of who was really good at that was dave carpenter. i think he did a lot of that sort of thing in a trio with peter erskine and bob sheppard. he also did a lot of crazy walking bass with chords stuff.

2 things... Dave Carpenter a six string bassist?

Okay, so to differentiate between, to use your terms, pass chord melody and broken chords with passing notes... are you just alluding to the melody, as opposed to playing it, outright? Got any good resources, maybe an old chart you made?

yeah. he was playing a white fodera aj6 when i saw them.

i just choose a tune i like and play through it a lot. no charts except in my head. i’m looking at it more as a comping exercise. conceptually, i stole a lot from sparser bill evans and a cellist named ernst reijseger.

Hey there! Hope y’all are well. Been away for a bit. Totally got obsessed over mountain biking for some reason. Great excuse to get outdoors when weather allows.
Also, Hulu has a series called Devs, which is kinda sorta in Black Mirror territory. The sound design and music is really great, I think. Some of you might like it, I’m thinking :)

So, I'm still somewhat new to comping. Do you just go through the chords, and play the juicy parts, and try to allude to the melody?

Yeah, that's what I need to do. Does he actually do that in his performances, too?

as i recall he did some stuff like that. i only saw them once and it was a long time ago.

in terms of voicings, yeah, i go for what i consider the color notes: 3rds, 7ths, -/+5s. i also play melodically with those (but not the *melody*)

chord extensions can be cool.

pedaled roots with passing 3rds, 4ths, 5ths can be nice. you can also dispense with the root and do pedaled 5th, with passing 6th, 7th, octave. that sort of thing.

i also break up the rhythm a lot.

btw, i think @emjazz has a book he’s been working from on this stuff.

I'll have cross country skied over 30 miles by the time this week's over. There's some white up here, now.
That’s a tad crazy.. I never really took to skiing but used to be a mad snowboarder (got too expensive cos had to travel, pay for accomodation and food and it’s always about double on the mountains where I went!) but hated the flats... lose any momentum and just easier to unstrap and walk! That said, last time I went being totally unfit and when I got back to accomodation I think I was in the floor in the drying room for a while. Forgot snowboarding you pretty much doing 100’s of sit-ups a day :)

On another note managed to fix my sy1 loop properly - now works with pedal both on and off as intended. And my analogue octave up came in... time to do more wiring soon!
