Ampeg Rocket Bass Combos

Turn ms out there’s no Ampeg authorized service people within hours of me. Unfortunately I can’t afford to ship it so I guess I’m just stuck with a lemon and we’ll have learned nothing from my experience :(

That's disappointing to hear. I'll see if I can drop mine off as soon as I'm not going to be playing it much for a week or so.

More or less I feel comfortable. I have a friend that can walk me through not killing myself on a high voltage capacitor.

I wouldn’t go through all this trouble for a DI. I don’t know if I mentioned this but the amp cabinet itself is putting off a high amount of EMI that microphones pick up on like crazy, making it nearly impossible to record from the amp. I hovered the mic back and forth over an outlet and the amp and the frequency of the interference from the amp matches the frequency of the AC outlet.

I’m guessing (with super limited knowledge) therefore that it’s a shielding issue of sorts. We’ll see if I can find the cause..

Did you try the amp on a different AC circuit?

This thread along with one I created a while back helped me make the choice to order an RB-110. I posted my impressions of the amp in that thread but wanted to share them here in case it might be helpful or interesting for some.

I use this amp when I perform in a classic rock duo. We have no drummer and instead use a drum machine (low stage volume). I have used it as a monitor (not running bass through my main monitor) and DI going to the board at rehearsals and 2 outdoor performances so far. I am impressed by the tones I am getting and have found that with the volume at about 10:30 I can hear the bass well in rehearsals and performances. Also, this gives me plenty of signal going to the board (DI is post volume/tone as many of you know) and is dead quiet. I am able to get a lot of great sounds by adjusting the tone knobs and using the SGT, though I have mostly run the amp with the tone knobs at 12:00 and the SGT off. It sounds great to these ears at these settings. I am using a Mustang PJ, almost always on the neck pickup, tone open, with well broken-in Chromes, playing mostly but not exclusively with a pick.

At home, I run the volume between 9:00 and 10:00. To give you a sense of how loud this is, I can sing at these volumes and still hear the bass clearly.

Which one should I get? RB110, RB112 or RB115?

I bought the RB110 - I like it. Tone is a tad boxy. Ampeg's site has audio samples and the RB115 sounds better to my ears. My plan was to replace the speaker (since much of the amp's tone is in the speaker) but that puts me at the cost of the RB112. And then there's the 115.

So, from purely a sound perspective, which do you prefer? I can't try them locally. If I'm going to make any swaps I need to decide soon while the RB110 is still returnable.

I just bought a demo RB112 from Sweetwater, which arrived quickly and was in flawless condition. Got it for $380ish?. A few things sold me on the 12,
1) it has an Eminence speaker.
2) you’re getting 100 watts with either the RB112 or the RB115, unless you add an extension cab to the RB115 for the full 200 watts. For the price of an extension cab I can buy another RB112 and run two. Oh, and the RB112 is lighter and cheaper. Just my $0.02

If you liked the 115 sound and lower frequency bass, I would get the 115. I have the 112 and wish I had the 115 but the return window has closed. But I have my Rumble 115 cab and it does get low. I can get close with the 112 if I push the bass through an SCR-DI.

Dropped the 210 off to get the DI noise looked at. Will update as I hear more!

Well that was fast. No sooner had I finished posting that comment than the shop called, they had said they thought it would be 3 weeks when I dropped it off...

Anyway, apparently they can't replicate the problem. So maybe the DI noise is user error?

Can someone tell me if I'm doing something that shouldn't be done?
  1. Amp volume ~12 o'clock, comfortable for the room
  2. DI out into interface (Presonus AudioBox USB 96)
  3. Input gain to just below clipping, usually ~10 o'clock
I had hoped to go by today and see if I could get it sorted, but I couldn't leave work early and wanted to have some time to chat with the tech about it.

I just got back from GC - took a look at the RB115 compared to the RB110 - I don't like the size. I'll use this as a home practice amp and the smaller RB110 fits my small room much better. Decided not not do any swap. RB110 it is.

Are you able to lift the ground on the DI?

You really should check out the 112. I’m very satisfied with how well it covers large rooms and outdoor gigs.

What Input Gain control? You’re using SGT?
