Ampeg SGT-DI

If you like a straight ahead SVT sound and you want to play live, sending cabsim to FOH and run an on stage amp, I’d go with the origin. The amp eq is a really nice feature. Origin is less pedalboard real estate also.

If you want the B15 tones also and you will use it primarily for practice then the aux in and headphone out I think makes the SGT the winner. I am a bit concerned about robustness of some of the switches under rough use, especially the cabsim volume, which is you are using to FOH you may have to adjust.

some video reviews seem to sound like the switch from SVT to B15 is upping the bass and lowering the treble. Is that accurate? Like a strong hpf being added?

So these are preloaded in the user slot? Which is in which slot?

I have a HPF on my iAmp Classic...it's subtle - so much so that it's always on. Not sure if it's the subtle rolloff or perhaps the frequency it's at.

The HPF on the iAmp Classic is something like 30Hz... It's there for protection and power management, not tone. The tone controls on the SGT-DI are in "musical" ranges with wider control.

Yeah, I guess that was my point. I'm not sure I would use the low cut and combine with the bass boost to compensate. It feels like it would use up my bass control to bring it back to something I could use.

I could be wrong, might be some magic using those 2 controls to boost a notched frequency- somewhat like with Sadowsky basses.. using the vtc to tailor the "voice" of the treble control.

Is the compression and good? I have an origin effects compact bass comp and a Seymour Duncan Studio bass I switch between. If the compression is good that might edge it.
Can you get B15 sound out of the Origin or is it just SVT?

I also have a cali76 and it’s great.

The compressor on the ampeg SGT I really don’t like. However after turning the dial slightly back and forth for several minutes I found that I can set it just to catch the highest peaks and prevent the cabsim from clipping. Of course this level will change with every bass.
On a board I’ll probably put a real compressor on with it, but is is usable alone if you don’t need lots of compression.

So far, so good with the SGT. I'm still learning how the preamp and grit volumes operate. I've been using the preamp side to set my volume and then add the grit volume to it, although the grit side sounds good on its own, clean, if the volume is up and grit turned down, with no volume from the preamp side. The compressor processes the combined volumes.

With passive basses, the headphone output has been pretty low. I'll run some sort of preamp into the input when playing with phones to compensate. The output into an amp input is fine, however. It sounds terrific in front of my Genzler 10-2 Combo stack.

The compressor is simple but effective for an all-in-one unit. I will most likely front the SGT with the Empress Bass Compressor to have more control. I'm thinking Strobostomp > Broughton RFE > EBC > SGT for the Nano+ board.

Hiss can be had with the SGT, particularly with Ultra Hi on and higher volume settings, but overall, it's fine, and will definitely work live. Recording will take some care to reduce it.

I've used the IR Loader software to set all six presets to 50% which reduces the chances of digital distortion from the IRs. I then pushed in the IR volume so it stays set.

I think the IR presets that come with the SGT sound great and they are different from each other, so it's a nice variety of cabs to choose from. I've never owned an Ampeg amp, so I don't know what they sound like, but I like the choices Ampeg gave us.

As others have noted, you can use the software to set high and low pass filtering on the IRs, although I don't know if those are hard cutoffs with no slopes. I will probably leave those alone and do all the HPF/LPF with my Broughton RFE.

There is a learning curve to the SGT, but it's fun and sounds really nice overall. I have not played it out yet, but will take it to a jam this weekend.

I noticed when switching between cab sims, they are not very well volume matched. Could be how I'm using the preamp, but the 410 is significantly louder/brighter than the others. Will have to fire up the software and try to even them out.

That's because the levels for each are set to the same level last used. So you can set each to unity gain to alleviate this difference in volume between cab sims. Set the 115 to your desired volume using the push in cab sim volume knob, then match the same volume to the 410, and finally the 810. From there the volumes will remain the same until you change each again.

Could anyone point me in a direction to what are the best ampeg cab IRs floating atound the internet. Im looking to get some good ones to upload into my SGT when i can get my hands on one. I have the York audio IR’s right now and theyre all kinda woofy. Im looking for ampeg 810, 410, and/or 610. Something in that realm.

I did a (very) little bit of research into this a few weeks back and quite a few guys were liking this for cab sim IRs.

I've got no real world experience with them personally.

Cab Impulse Response Megathread

There's info in there for more than just Ampeg IRs of course, but might be helpful. But I do remember there was some healthy discussion in there about 8x10 IRs as well.

I've been tinkering with IRs on/off for a while now and have collected quite a few (though never actually implemented into my gigging signal chain)... Of the ones I have experience with: Check out Dr. Bonkers, 3Sigma Audio, and the Ampeg IRs in the Shift Line Bass IR pack. Personal taste will come into play here of course, but I've found the ones you actually pay for to be better quality/sound than most of the freebies I've run across.
