The whole sound / PA thing seems to polarize opinion. The whole "My way or the Highway" mentality resides permanently in the ongoing sound system / worship team "issues" that perpetually come around.

Fortunately / unfortunately our church will not likely force this type of decision on us. Our A/V budget last year was $0.00! We'll need new mains speakers, mains amps, a decent set of piano mics, wall acoustic treatment, a new keyboard, compressors, training for the soundguys etc. (the basics) before we'll ever drop megabucks on a sophisticated IEM system.

I've never quite understood the "all amps off the stage" mentality. It seems like a half-baked compromise to the grey hairs (of which I am one) who seem to regularly carp about modern worship music. Maybe it's an "out of sign out of mind" thing.

I've been enjoying my Genz Benz GBE600 / Neox 212 rig so much these days, I think I'd really miss it as I'm relying on it a lot to generate the different tones I'm using for different songs.

Yeah it's definitely not the same.
Now I have a smaller amp I could bring and use tastefully, but oh no, not that...
But our worship leader is the lead guitarist, and he keeps his Mesa .22 combo on an amp stand facing his right side, and he doesn't let anyone tell him what to do about it.
It just is a mess right now, as we try and tell the elders and everyone, "This sanctuary wasn't built for acoustic pleasantries!" but they don't seem to get it.
It's not always bad, but yeah we mainly need some soundpeeps big time.

I pulled out my IEM's during soundcheck yesterday, and it really is loud onstage.
We have 3 350W EV monitors w/in about a 5 ft. radius of each other, for the violin/viola players (which are totally unnecessary), one girl BGV, acoustic guitar, and another girl BGV who plays french horn (LOUDLY, I might add).
So, of course, it's the bass and guitar that are always too loud but when you have those loud orchestral instruments on stage one, and then coming BACK through monitors, loudly, it is a problem.
That's why I had to get the molded IEMs, to block out all that ruckus.

You want to try the E5s or the SE500s...much better bass response...that what I use when I'm "forced" to go in-ear...I'm still not unconvinced that down the road someone's going to say that it does after all affect your hearing...

I've been playing a least once a week when the other bass player isn't there. His amp is a crate BX100, it seems pretty week considering the church seats 450 or so. There is only a piano with the choir so a lot of volume isn't needed.

It just quit for while the other day and faded in and out another time. If it dies I'd know where there is a peavey 300W head and a 410 cabnet sitting. It would be a little overkill but even with low volume it think it would sound much better.

IMO it has to.
Is it as much as playing open-ears, at loud volumes w/ monitors? Prolly not. However, I get volume-spikes ALL the time that almost bring me to tears on some of our BGV people, and I go straight back there after we get done to the soundbooth and make sure they know never to do that again, as that's MY eardrums they're about to burst.
The E5's are good from what I've heard, but go here, http://www.earphonesolutions.com/ and read some of their shootout stuff. I did a lot of reading before buying mine, and the UM2's are the best bang for the buck is what I found.

Though this has changed now. We've downsized to a smaller building for a short while! I've never seen 100 people in such a small room! :smug: at the moment I'm going into my Sansamp bass driver straight to the desk, using a wireless in-ear setup for monitors. I tell you something I can't get on with this In-ear monitoring stuff...its a right nightmare!

This is one of the main reasons I don't go out and buy IEMs. That and I'm hoping we can bring our amps back onstage when they build the new sanctuary.

I play every week at my church (approx. 9,000 members w/ 3,500 people in attendance for each of 3 services). We have an Ampeg SVT 4 Pro head into an SVT 8x10 cabinet. They run a line from the preamp out into a passive direct box into the house system. I play my own MusicMan Stingray bass into it and I have no complaints at all. People always comment how good the bass sounds in the house mix. Our stage is pretty big so I run the master volume at about 45% and the pre-amp gain just to the point of clipping. I do not use the decibal pad. I tried it for a while but it seemed to suck some tone. I keep the EQ settings almost completely flat and disable to the ultra high and ultra low switches. I basically EQ through my bass since it has a 3 band on-board active EQ. Our church PA is powered by 30 QSC amps (1,000 watts) a piece. Our frontline and the drummer (singers, acoustic guitar and piano) use Shure in-ear monitors and the backline uses traditional wedge monitors.

I wanted to add that our personnel consists of a drummer ( in a fully miced and enclosed booth) a percussionist (also in a fully piezo miced and enclosed booth), a 40 person choir (on risers w/ 4 overhead condensers), a synth/organ/piano guy, a regular piano guy (electric Roland AC-90), an acoustic guitar (direct through an LR Briggs active DI), an electric guitar (playing through an original Fender Twin Reverb (miced with an SM-50) and me on bass (same rig as described in previous post). Sometimes we have a 4 piece horn section as well although that hasn't occurred in a while. We play modern praise and worship music but are moving more towards black gospel and "celebratory" type music. It's quite a transition going from U2 wantabe worship music to black gospel! But it is alot of fun.. especially for a bass player!

Well if we ever build a new church, it'll be engineered a LOT more towards the praise and worship aspect, as opposed to just "getting it done cheap", because they see the problem with having a 4 ft rasied/wooden/hollow stage about 6-8 feet from the front row now.
But Aviom's come in this week, and I'll be good after that, being able to make my OWN dang mix!

I use my Eden Nemesis NA650 with an Avatar SB112 Delta LF and run direct out of the head to the sound system. We have a 450 seat sanctuary and I really wouldn't need to run through the sound system as my rig has ample power to fill the area. However, running through the system does allow the volume level to be distributed more evenly than if it were coming from only a single sound source. I typically have little, if any, bass going through the monitors as my rig does an excellent job of filling the stage area to everyone else's satisfaction.

I haven't played the GBE heads, but the clips sound really good. I love the GS112 cabs.

I'll be playing my Epifani PS-112 with a Focus 2 Series II outdoors this Saturday for an Easter Egg Hunt at church. I like this amp alot with the PS cab - it matches better with it than the UL cab. The cabs complement well when stacked and sound awesome. Might be too much for the FOH (or 'Y'=yard) guy.

I played the PS/Focus rig last Saturday at a downtown festival and it sounded great. Love this rig!
