Is that where he talks about "xenochrony"? That was the first time I'd heard of that concept (regardless of what it was called), but I eventually recognized it as the natural evolution of some of Charles Ives' compositional techniques.

Reminds me of a story from my youth: In 1977, the summer between my junior and senior years in high school I attended one of the 6-week intensive music courses at the Berklee College Of Music. In the Arranging class we had to arrange a tune for 4-piece ensemble (piano, guitar, bass, drums). Most of my classmates chose a jazz standard from the Real Book (e.g., "All The Things You Are" or "Autumn Leaves" etc.)

I chose "Absolutely Free" from We're Only In It For The Money.

And btw it was a rousing success, especially the point where all four musicians had to stop playing and yell "BOING!" out loud. I got an A on the project.

"Absolutely Free" is first Zappa tune my piano playing wife chose (out of the FZ Songbook) to work on and play along with me. One of her more memorable quotes is "The melody is so beautiful...then the lyrics come in.". She's now working on "Let's Make The Water Turn Black" and "How Could I Be Such A Fool".

He was MIA for a lesson we had scheduled that I showed up for (in Manhattan) and made it up to me by taking a looooong subway ride to my apartment in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn to make good on it.
