Anyone else trying to quit smoking in 2013?

Holy moly. So you gonna chastise the people I know that have been chewing Nicorettes for years too? I'll not belittle your effort, yet you feel superior because of it? Pfizer makes millions off helping ease people off nic, supposedly, but truly you know they would love to have you use their spray and inhalers for life. Vaping is safe and cheap and I have encouraged you all to continue with your mission. The Emperor has no clothes.

You want a private conversation? PM amongst yourselves, don't open a thread.

My rigid definition? You're joking?

Here's the problem: those guys are still addicted to nicotine. I would wager that most folks, including those such as myself who HAVE ACTUALLY QUIT AND ARE NO LONGER ADDICTED TO NICOTINE, and have a real understanding and appreciation for how hard it is, would call vaping what it is, which is addiction to nicotine. It's not quitting. Vaping is easy; quitting is not. Quitting is really ****ing hard. Accepting vapers as quitters serves no purpose other than to belittle the efforts of those who have actually QUIT.
If to want to pat yourselves on the back for switching to vapor, there's already a thread for that.

No its not. If quitting smoking is hard you're doing it wrong. Stop telling people that. That makes people not want to quit smoking. What exactly is so hard about it anyway?

I don't generally like to play along with willful ignorance, but it should be fairly obvious that trying to quit smoking is indeed difficult for many people, particularly heavy or long-term smokers.

As I said in my earlier post, if quitting smoking is difficult, there is probably a problem with your approach. I smoked for 9 years. That's not that long compared to a lot of people, but its long enough to develop a lot of psychological associations which can make quitting more difficult. For probably 3 or 4 of those years, I was "trying" to quit. It was really hard, but that's because I was doing it wrong. I quit 10 days ago. The first three days sucked, but I kept reminding myself it was temporary and that it would go away, and to be totally honest, it was easy. I'm not going to tell you there haven't been moments where its been hard, but overall it has been very easy. A year ago I would have told you that quitting smoking was really hard to do. I was wrong. I was doing it wrong. If anyone is trying to quit smoking and is having a hard time, post here or PM me, I'd be happy to share the book that helped me with you. There's a link to it somewhere on this thread.

But yeah, if quitting smoking is hard, it's hard because you're making it hard for yourself. It doesn't have to be hard. I was a heavy smoker (close to 2 packs/day for the last few years), but I abruptly stopped and lo and behold I did not die, my head did not explode, and hey, I feel pretty great. This whole deal where I wake up at 5AM every day kind of sucks ***, but I'm hoping it's temporary.

I'll say it again, just to reiterate. If you're having a hard time quitting smoking, you're doing it wrong. Examine your approach and modify what isn't working. IME and YMMV of course, but that was certainly not the lamest thing you've ever read on talkbass. There are much more deserving candidates for that title. You know there are.

I have to agree with that and your " lame remark" too. Psychology. A hundred people telling you you can't do it might convince you you can't. The opposite applies. Try and deny it? Just refer to nazism for proof that suggestion convinces people to any action you like. I had hoped to not evoke "Godwin's law" here but it's the best example of psychological manipulation available.

Edit: that's the whole purpose of this support thread ain't it? Spreading good vibes and supportive language. One guy here said cold turkey is the only way to handle it and if you choose another way, you aren't doing it right. That's lame.

So let's get it back on track.

I haven't smoked in 10 days, which is awesome.

Anyone else?

Congrats on your 10 days! Every day is a new accomplishment!

I dont remember the exact day I quit, but Im just over the 5 month mark.
The odd thing is, one can always pick up the habit again. I quit the first time a bit over 5 years ago, and stayed smoke free for 2 years.
Then, on a 3 day roadtrip with my band, began smoking again. Im glad to be off them.

There are many benefits to quitting smoking, far above and beyond anything related to your health or finances.

I gotta go, I have a date with a hottie who probably wouldn't want to talk to me if I was still sucking down 20-30 Marlboros every day.
