Bands that have two bass players

I saw a James Brown concert video a few months back and there were 2 bass players, but only one (stage right) was playing. The other bass guy was on stage left and just stood there holding his bass and wearing a s--- eating grin all night! I wonder if he was getting paid?

they alternated, or played at the same time at the show that I was at.... pretty sure that they all got paid on his gigs.

Watched the Live in Madison Square Garden Vid, (seems to be understandably in heavy rotation every December) and saw two bass players not sure why,but one is left of the drum kit and the other, in flowing robes, is just behind and to the right of Lennon.

Peter Hook uses a second bass player. He can't sing and play bass at the same time. While he's been on tour playing Joy Division, he doesn't even play most of his own bass lines, since he sings lead.

Ken Vandermark's Barrage had two bassists. Two of everything, actually; his "Double Trio" predated King Crimson's by several years.

edit: ...and postdated Ornette Coleman's by several decades.

Tortoise have featured two bass players also. Interesting band!

Back when Faith was a new album, The Cure used two basses (four strings, not the Fender VIs) on Primary.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned 1970s English rock 'n' roll revival band Showaddywaddy. They had two vocalists, two guitarists, two bassists and two drummers. Having said that, I've no idea how they used their two bassists and drummers live or in the studio (did they take turns?), but I know they had a fair number of mainstream hits between the glam-rock and punk eras.

Huh? I was at one of the Halloween 1978 Zappa concerts (Palladium in NYC) and neither Arthur Barrow nor Shankar were present.

EDIT: Oops, I'm wrong, I was at a 1977 Halloween show, not '78. Sorry, nevermind.

Barrow played fretted and O'Hearn played fretless. I think FZ wasn't enamored with the fretless sound, but Patrick was a good soloist and also one of the funnier guys in the group, so Frank brought him back for that Halloween run.

I quite like O'Hearn and that era of FZ in general... for me the lineup with him, Bozzio, and Adrian Belew was my favorite.

He also has used Billy Sheehan, Steve Bailey, and Adam Nitti.
