Bands That Your Amazed That Made It.

This thread is fine. No one should feel insulted. It just shows how subjective music is to us all. What one person calls the greatest thing they've heard is the worst thing ever heard by someone else. Success or the rating of an album in the Rolling Stone record guide have absolutely nothing to do with my musical preferences. I simply let my ears do the listening and decide if I like or dislike it.

I have to stick up for Nickelback. I wasn't a fan either, but my wife wanted to go to see them. Chad Kroger worked the crowd amazingly. Their show was tight and sounded good. I was truely ENTERTAINED by them. IMO, THAT is why they made it.

As do I. I was invited to a Nickelback show and wasn't really jazzed up about going. However, they put on a great show.

Bands that I am suprised that made it....

* The Darkness. I saw a music video of theirs and instantly loved it. But when it came to their image, which I thought was cool, I was shocked that anyone had signed 'em.

*Adelita's Way. Saw them open up for GN'R on New Years Eve. Awful sound, and the singer stumbled around with the lyrics a lot.

Don't forget what a good producer can do if the musicians are willing.

So many national bands, especially nowadays, would sound like garage bands if it weren't for producers' magic. The music business is funny that way. I'm sure we all know musicians who have careers in obscurity playing cover music who can smoke national musicians with one hand tied behind their back.

Oh, and I've always thought that Kathy Griffin's hot. :hiding: But I have a thing for redheads and funny women.

Shes does have red hair but i'm still waiting for her to be funny ;)

Actually what makes people here hate Nickleback is the same reason they made it. They use certain "formulas" to write pop songs. That makes for successful hits. Also the guy does have a good voice and good guitar tone. They also employ the drop tunings to get the modern sound. They do have a few good songs. But some of their hits are cheesy.

The same explaination applies to Creed and other bands.

Beautifully said. I actually don't hate Nickelback and own one of their albums. I also have always found their stuff deceptively tricky to cover because vocal arranagement is so important to their sound.

Agreed. My brother and I were laughing just the other day over the fact that he was a college radio dj when the Stones' Some Girls came out. At the time he and his music nerd friends had vigorous debates over whether or not it was any good. It's now recognized as one of their greatest records by most fans.

Not much of a band and the front guy was not much of a singer IMHO.

I still remember flippin' a lid when I saw this commercial a few years ago: Burger King Fantasy - YouTube

And yes, as a teen in the 90s, I owned Cracked Rear View. It's still a good album. :D They didn't do much of anything else. I think they had a minor hit with Old Man and Me. I guess that makes them the Dexys Midnight Runners of the 90s.

Dig it.

Now,
I'm a huge Primus fan. But, Primus. It looks as though they actually set out with abject failure in mind!

And since all we can really offer here is opinion, here's mine -
Johnny Cash's fame boggles me. Did he attempt to hit a single note in his life? Bob Dylan falls firmly into that category too. I've listened intently to these guys trying to figure out why them & not a million other warblers but gotten nowhere on the subject. Ah well.

I have to agree with those mentioned and would like to add The White Stripes.

I'm the antithesis of their fanbase and probably "old". We're also entitled to be biased because they don't have a bassist. :D

To be honest, when I heard them the first time they reminded me of every crappy guitarist, singer, and drummer audition rolled into one band.

The drums were so basic that I could probably do that. I don't consider that bragging. I listened to all sorts of music as a kid and it just reminded me of someone learning to play drums.

The guitar is like nails on a chalk board. Very cheap and pitchy sounding. Just reminded me of someone who didn't have a very good ear or good gear.

I'll leave the vocals alone, only because I don't know where to start. I'm not a singer, but the guy's tone seems to cater to the less is more crowd where everyone can celebrate mediocrity and bash people who work hard to learn their craft.

even before I saw all the replies, the title of the post made me think Nickleback..

I'm not surprised Nickleback made it, but continuously surprised that they continue to do well releasing the same songs over and over again. They're not the first band to do this and I doubt they'll be the last. I'm simply shocked that it continues to sell very well.

To be honest, they're not a horrible band. If they only got played every once in a while, they might be alright. I don't think the songs are good enough to warrant that much overplaying.

I love Dave Matthews Band...I guess I'm in a minority.

DMB is ok, but it's their fans that are the deal breaker! :p I was in college for 6 years and EVERY college kid who thinks they're musically sophisticated listens to DMB, who are highhandedly the BEST rock, jazz, or blues band of ALL TIME.

+1
The music industry is dumb.

Yup.

Nirvana. Yup, I said it.

Yes, the music of the 80's had turned into copy-cats and lame wannabes. But that's no excuse to get even lazier. And then to bitch about it and blow your head off when you get famous?!?!

Gimme a break. Sign me to a multi-million dollar record deal. Give it to someone that wants it.

Ok, I'm done.

Oh yeah. And Katy Perry. I mean, really.

+1 to Justin Bieber and Dave Matthews Band.

Boober is....well, you know what he is, but he has Disney or someone behind him and a never-ending supply of pre-teen girls to be his fans.

Dave Matthews....elevator music or worse

to the guy who said the White Stripes, I have to agree that Meg White is probably the worst excuse for a musician that I have ever heard, but that is not the point...Jack White is an amazingly inventive guitarist and I also like his voice. Meg was just there for laughs.

there is a two person group who fits this category, however-- the god-awful Ting- Tings. if they made it, there is hope for anybody.

Bands that my what? I'm amazed you made it through high school.

'your' amazed too? ;)

And I add, ANY rapper, period and I DESPISE death. speed and black metal, ALL GARBAGE. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

while we have opinions....ones that make such generalizations are hard to even take at face value...

sounds like Grade 10 locker room BS....
