Bergantino AE212; Part 2!!

I got the AE212 today. Good sounding 2-way. I gave it some 40hz pink noise for about an hour and tried it again. It sounded better. I know someone mentioned sealing the ports but I can't find it. Is it ok to seal the ports on this cab without damaging it? I tried it at low volume and actually prefered it sealed. I can see how it would save you in boomy rooms.

What is this pink noise thing?

The short answer is, he was breaking the cab in, in an especially effective way.

Thanks Vic,
Sorry but I could not understand what that Wikipedia article said. I majored in Electrical Engineering and have never heard of pink noise, neither could make any sense of how it can make my AE212 sound better.
Forgive my ignorance, but I also have never heard that cabinets needed to be broken in. How does that pink noise help in that, and how can you generate pink noise?
I just got a new AE212 and have played with it twice. Does it still make sense to "break it in"?

The theory, which is highly debated, is I believe focused on the suspension of the driver. There's an initial period of time that it's a little stiffer, but after some initial hours of use, especially at the low end where it'll move more, the speaker kinda' breaks in and has better dynamic behavior.

Personally, I've never noticed a change in the cabs I've bought new, but I've also never conducted an experiment specifically to listen for it, either.

FWIW.

Sometimes pink noise is used to set up the PA system EQ for a room. Devices like the dbx Driverack 260 have pink noise generators. The pink noise is played at gig volume (it's really obnoxious) through the PA, and a microphone is placed in the room to pick up the sound. The mic is connected to the DR 260, which automatically sets the EQ for the room. Then some minor tweaking is done manually to cherry it out. It's called "pinking the room."

As far as breaking in new speakers, I've never noticed the effect.

If the surrounds are any kind of modern elastomer, the excursion strain is unlikely to change the mechanical behavior. I would have to see Instron tests, but not likely the excursion is anywhere near permanent deformation.

Would need to see Mythbuster data to the contrary to be convinced otherwise.

Back to your regularly scheduled Begantino homage....

What????? My question is, is it ok to seal the ports on this cab? It seems to have deltalite 2512-II drivers or some variant. Thanks.

Gig update:

I have been through so many rigs in my few years of playing bass it's ridiculous! I'm back on the 'minimalist lightweight' deal now, and picked up a Bergantino AE212 from BassSanDiego. Any SoCal'ers should do themselves a favor and hit up BSD! Totally cool to work with, really flexible with shipping, and just all-around nice guys. Really pleased with the service :)

I also picked up a MINTY Markbass LM Tube here a week ago.

Last night was the first gig with that new rig and my Dingwall Super J (which is for sale currently). Really a nice stage sound. Previously had an Aguilar rig, which was quite beautiful at home, but on the gig, dialing in a tone that both supported and cut through was rather difficult. Again, loved the wooly tone at home, but out on the gig it wasn't working so well. Anyways, the tone with the LM/AE212 was just golden! Had the blend all the way to tube (forgot to try it in the solid state setting) with the low mids boosted a tad and the high mids cut a tad. Tweeter was at around 10-11 o'clock.

Bass settings were as follows: slight bass boost on the OBP-1 the whole night, and slightly cut the passive tone. Preamp engaged. Parallel pickup mode. Occasionally i'd switch to the bridge pickup and roll off the tone for a couple really moving jazzy tones. Really great tones!

The AE212 is definitely way more supportive than the AE210 I had last year (which is not surprising), though I hear a little of what Ken and others have been talking about in regards to the AE212 being relatively special (tonally) in the AE lineup. It is definitely more big in lows, and outa-the-box more smooth than I found the AE210 (which was rather honky IMO). I suppose I have a few more hours of "hard" playing before the box opens up, so we shall see how that changes things.

As an aside, it is quite nice to have a flat-ish sounding head (though quite warm sorta 'tube clean' if you ask me) again... Really let's the instrument shine through. If you play a passive jazz right into the amp, it's going to sound like a raw passive jazz, which is a tone on a lot of records nowadays... (or a passive p, which is probably more popular right now).

Thinking of adding a tube pedal for some more tube warmth or maybe a VT bass for some grind here and there. We'll see.

Gotta love Bergantino cabinets!

This morning I ran the 9.2's di out to my crown xti poweramp and used a 12db 100hz high pass filter. It gave me pretty much the same sound as plugging the ports and Im sure it would be safer for the speakers. Now Im thinking of gettting one of Fdeck's hp filters and running it in the fx loop of the genz head for the same effect. Would this produce the same sound? Anyway, I like the cab high passed. It really gets the sealed sound. I actually prefered the 24db roll-off. I'll bet I would have like the fearful cabs alot more if I had remembered to try the HP filter trick. Hmmm.....

Glad you are digging the MB LM Tube :)

USed my AE212/ MESA Walkabout rig again on one of the weekend's gigs. Just superb!!

The AE212 STILL aint as nice as the NV215 (IMO) with the WA, but DAMN it's a lovely combination. The NV215 (IMO) is just a tad more 'vintage' sounding (With a P-bass w- flats) than the AE212, but when size & weight restrictions apply...
It's STILL a WOW factor rig. LOVING IT!

Hey,

Thank you all for giving me gas!!!
I just got a Genz Shuttle 9.0 because of a gas attack an now I'm wanting to try an AE212 with it! Thanks for all the great info guys. Can someone post a pic of the back of the cab? Please.

Thanks!
Jim

Unless someone takes a pic B4 me- I'll take a pic of my AE212 tonite & post tomorrow.

If WORDS add up to much for ya... REAR of AE212:-
It's got the spkr inputs-2each jack & Speakon & Horn level adjust up near the top, & 2 ROUND ports (same as the ONE on the AE112)- in similar positions to the AE112...-so if you can imagine 2 AE112's ontop of each other- this is where the ports are & look like.
Other than that- pics later.....

Rod

I found an old pic of my AE112 - now if U can imagine this doubled-vertically (but without another control plate.... :hiding:) U got the rear of the AE212 Sorry NOT a great pic- but I hope it helps

I dunno if it's already in the thread but Jim suspended the line due to massive increases in Neodymium costs. (Drivers).

They're said to be up 100+% in cost.

:(

God. Bless, Ray

From my info from Don at Low Down Sound, it was only Eminence that significantly increased their price on their neo speaker line. However, unfortunately, Jim uses Eminence drivers in his AE line. In order to switch over to Faital or Bema or whatever, that means boxes need to be redesigned, crossovers recalibrated, etc.

To give you an example, Don's cost for a 3015LF loaded 51/6 cab has increased $50 due to the driver price increase.
