Big E speakers: Pt 2

Oh man, we need to get together sometime as I would love to hear that combo!

Boone county isn't that far from Crawford, so it wouldn't be a long journey. The 110 Flex will arrive before the Reeves, which should land in Missouri in August. It will be equipped with KT-120 power tubes (no upcharge!) which minimize mid-scoop according to the 'expert ears' of Tom Bowlus...

Back home from vacation

The Reeves sounds ASTOUNDING with the 110!

I was thinking about a Valkyrie to push the 110 Flex harder than my Walkabout, but ended up going with some old-school big iron. I'm in the build queue for a Reeves 225. This is going to be fun. I'm not saying that I'll never try a Valkyrie - I've learned to never say never ;) .

Anxiously awaiting your opinion on the matter! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :D

ok---some news

Two 110Flex cabs are built and I have all of the components--- they will be finished next week.

The 210 Flex cabs are built and Steve is finalizing the (annoyingly complex) crossover. Likely the first week of August for these guys.

Cool new thing--
Finished the cab and crossover for the 110/45 combination. I'm SUPER happy with it. It has the purity of the 45/85 but with the low end of the 110. My son and I spent an hour going back and forth between the 110Flex and the 110/45. We couldn't decide which we preferred. The Flex is crazy in how many sounds you can get--all functional. The 110/45 just has this purity thing happening. Don't know how to describe it.

Now---I can build the 110/45 as a single cab but it's a little bigger than the 110Flex. Likely about 26w x 14d by 27 high.

Here's the cool thing. What I recommend is a 110 sub with a 45. The crossover is built into the sub. The sub cab is 26 x 14 x 13 and likely about 30#.

My idea is to have a speaker pole socket (top hat) mounted on the top of the sub and the bottom of the 45. This way you can have a pole of any length to elevate the 45 as high as you want. Great floor coupling with the 110 and you still feel the mid to upper bass with the 45 but hear things with incredible clarity.

I know that lots of guys prefer the "one cab solution". Which I can do. I prefer modularity. A 45 for an upright gig or an electric gig where a 12 would suffice. Add a 110 to have the equivalent volume of a 15 or 410.

I will also have a 210 sub to use with a single 45. I'll be trying this in a few days. I'm thinking of adding a single pad switch to the 110 sub. The 45 is just a wee bit too hot (actually I like it) for a single 110 but the pad switch would make it flat. I need to find out if a single 45 will be efficient enough to compete with a 210.

The 110 sub cabs will have a Speakon input with another parallel Speakon to hook up another 110 sub. And a Speakon output to the 45.

If an existing 45 owner wants the sub I will install a top hat socket for free (you pay shipping) Also--it's really easy to install yourself. (for you European owners).

Also---works VERY well for PA use.

I'm also building the 45's with the Ciare tweet which is a bit better for electric bass.

Very cool! Any word on the grill situation?

oh man--

I can never keep TB monikers and people's names straight. I'll send yours out tomorrow. (sent a grill-less cab so he'd have it in time for an important gig)

I also have a new (and closer than Ca.) grill manufacturer that's good and REALLY fast

Ok again

To get a reasonable starting point we go by the air volume displaced by the speaker. With conventional speakers it's the area of the cone times excursion max.

With the Big E due to the contribution of the rear wave you multiply by 2.5. To be a bit more conservative let's say 2.25

the 5" woofer has a Vd of 42cc's. That's how much air it can move. So times 2.25=94.5cc's

The 6 winds up being 165cc's

The 8 is a whopping 419cc's.

NOW--

a Kappalite 3012lf 12" woofer is 496

A Kappatile 3015lf 15" is a crazy 844

A Deltalite 10" (pretty much as big as you'll see in a 10) is only 147

So--an 8x10 cab will be around 1176 cc's

A super 12 cab is about 496

A super 15 cab is 844

A 210 is 294

A 410 is 588

OK to compare

a 45 (4x5) is 378

a 65 is 567

an 85 is 756

a 26 (2x6.5) is 330

a 46 is 660

a 66 is 990

a 28 is 838

a 48 is 1676

So to compete with a 410 you have

a 65

a 46

to compete with a super 12

a 65

a 46 is a lot louder

to compete with a super 15

an 85 will do it--I've had them head to head if you go with the 2.5 ratio it's 840cc's

a 28

the 46 comes close---again when you go with 2.5 it comes out to 733

to compete with a 610

a 28

a 66 will beat it

an 85 will be very close

to compete with an 810

two 65's

two 46's

a 48 will beat it pretty easily

to compete with a 212

a 66

a 28 will come close

to compete with a 215

a 48

two 46's are pretty close

these have proved pretty close to accurate in my experience. As far as the 10's---most are within these parameters. A small few 10" cabs use custom oem drivers that have Vd's of more than 147cc's. Not most, though.

Am I reading this right? A 2x8 will compete with a 1x15? And a 1x8 will compete with a 1x12?

I need to replace all of my Trace Elliot drivers/speakers.

I have the 4/10 + horn and the dual front ported 15" travel bottom. Both were purchased new in 1994.

4 - 10's, 1 - 15 and the tweeter. After reading some posts here, I think that I will replace them with what they we're originally fitted for. The Trace Elliot drivers.

Feedback? Opinions?
