Biggest mistake a band ever made

Mr. Roboto was supposedly some big stiff, but the album sold 2.5 million and had two big hit singles. But there was a power struggle between Dennis and Tommy Shaw that ended in them permanently splitting.

Best three Styx albums were Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone, and Paradise Theatre. Mr. Roboto was not in any of those.
Pieces of Eight, yes. Cornerstone, maybe, although I prefer Grand Illusion and Crystal Ball. I hated Paradise Theater, though. The only thing I liked was that fancy laser graphic etched into the record :D

Wasn't just Shaw - DeYoung had his big theater vibe, and has said that he knew what was best for the group. The others just wanted to play rock. I always thought it was ironic - Shaw was portrayed as the "soft" music guy - I think because of his high voice. I first chose a Ric because of Panazzo.

When I saw Styx, Panozzo had already moved to an Alembic. But yeah, true that it wasn't just Tommy. Personally, I think Dennis should have eased up and relinquished some control. But I think both factions are still pretty great, and I find it pretty funny that Styx now has a Dennis sound-alike playing keys, and Dennis has a Tommy sound-alike playing guitar :D

Carlos Santana's band leaving him to back Steve Perry and form Journey. I guess Carlos is having the last laugh now. Other than Randy Jackson being on American Idol, what are the rest of them doing now? I think Journey is doing the county fair circuit now.

I think the biggest mistake KISS ever had was deciding to form a band. "Hey guys, we're simplistic players, our songs aren't great, so lets put on all these outrageous costumes, Gene gets his tongue surgically altered, breathes fire and spits up blood on stage, Ace can have his pickup in his guitar burn while he wanks out a mediocre solo distracting the audience so they cheer and think he's a great player, Paul can not wear a shirt showing off his hairy chest and play a strangely shaped guitar painted in silver sparkle (that looks for all the world like a can opener) and we can have 2 different drummers that were pretty much the same. We can rerecord some of the original drummer's songs with the new guy. Since we're in makeup our fans won't even notice."

Gun 'N Roses. Axl could have not been such a prima donna. Of course they were all using pretty heavily, but I think Axl's personality was pretty abrasive to begin with.

And Metallica seems to have done alright without Mustaine.

Van Halen should have kept David Lee Roth. Never cared for Sammy Hagar (even his solo stuff) and Gary Sharone just couldn't cut it.

Well they didn't leave to back Steve Perry. Steve Perry came on board after 2 albums. And yeah, big mistake to have a band that had like 15 hit singles and 6 hit albums instead of backing Santana, who keeps the lion's share of the money. If that's a mistake, please let me make one that big!

Mistakes??? KISS, Journey, and GnR are all in the Hall of Fame. Rose is hardly the only idiot in rock. Journey had far more success than Santana - it was their choice, and a good one (and Jackson was a late replacement). KISS may not be my cup of coffee, but they accomplished exactly what they wanted to do, although exponentially more successful than even they ever imagined.

Alice In Chains not officially breaking up and starting a new project. Cantrell (and Kinney too) was always the music and poetry, but Staley was the public face and defined the delivery of the songs. The two post-Staley albums have some of Cantrell's best writing, the band have all matured musically, and DuVall has a presence that is worth listening to. But so many people still dismiss it as a lame version of the original. I think had they renamed themselves they could have minimized the distractions.

Yeah, they are doing ok for themselves, so not the biggest mistake ever, but still.
I like the new stuff but Facelift and Dirt are untouchable.

Wrong! We just got back from opening four sold out arena shows for Journey. They are selling out around the world and I'm sure they aren't worried about next months rent, in part thanks to the demographic Arnel brings with him.
They also have Steve Smith in the band, they killed it night after night with two hour shows that were almost all hits. The nicest bunch of guys too!

I always wonder how some bands (and people in them) make the decisions they do.
A few examples would be personnel changes, musical direction changes, changes in producer, recording engineers, their overall band "look" and stuff like that.

-Why did Mick Taylor leave the Rolling Stones? ....he never did anything of note since and Ronnie Wood stepped in and has had a great career as the other guitar player.

-Black Sabbath fired Ozzy and then Ozzy went and kicked their ass for a decade or two before reconciliation measures brought them back together.

-Kiss took off their makeup, the only thing the band ever had going for them.

-Alice Cooper dumped his band and his records just turned into mush.

-Any band that ever stopped using Bob Ezrin, Mutt Lange, Rick Rubin or Butch Vig payed the price.

-The Beatles breaking up was idiotic.

-Guns and Roses breaking up was bad for everyone but Slash.

-Pink Floyd breaking up was dumb.

So, what are the biggest mistakes other bands have made..???
Black Sabbath fired Ozzy because he was growing increasingly unreliable and a liability as a frontman. It reinvigorated the band. Case in point, Heaven and Hell, and The Mob Rules were way better than Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die. People always forget that the last two albums with Ozzy before they fired him weren't very good.

Breaking up was the beast thing that ever happened to the Beatles. It meant that there could never be a bad Beatles album. I much prefer that to becoming a dinosaur band like the Stones.

GnR breaking up was because they didn't what they should have done years earlier... fire Axl.

It's personal taste, I'm just not a fan of Dio's singing, could never stomach any record he was on.
I have a hard time listening to a number of metal guys doing the opera singer thing.

It took me four decades to "re-appreciate" Black Sabbath.
I was 12 when they made their first album and I moved on after their third album, about 5 years ago I started listening to their records again.
Well, I disagree with you. I actually have seen both lineups of Sabbath, and I prefer the one with Dio live. And I vastly prefer the ones with Dio over Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die, which is the kind of records they would have been making if they'd continued with Ozzy. Prefer them to any solo Ozzy album, too, as well as 13, the one they did with Ozzy recently.

Basically it comes down to whether or not you prefer Dio or Ozzy overall. I've never met anyone who likes Ozzy solo better than Dio solo yet prefer Dio Sabbath. Or vice versa.

Myself I've never cared much for Dio although I recognize the talent he had. Probably has to do with his style, that type of singer is definitely not my favorite. IMO everything pre-ecstasy was fantastic, everything after regardless of singer is meh. With the exception of the song Heaven and Hell. That's bad ass.

But it was really like Sabbath joined Dio.
I disagree. If anything, he had his guitarists in his solo band model their style on Tony Iommi. Tons of signature amazing riffs all over the albums with Dio.

I disagree with everything you said except the Beatles comment.
Thought the Dio Sabbath sucked and anything else Dio ever did, to me his singing sounds like a romance novel.
I think the makeup ran it's course with Alice Cooper and few others, and that Kiss should have never existed.
Kiss was designed for 10 year old boys who watch cartoons...and without makeup, no more cartoon characters, and they certainly were not musicians, so what's left?...even Bob Ezrin could not help Kiss.
Well, I think you're wrong. Rainbow was awesome. So were the albums Heaven & Hell, Mob Rules, Dehumanizer, and The Devil You Know. And I'll take any of his solo work over any of Ozzy's with the exception of Ozzy's first two solo albums (the ones with Randy).

Agreed on Kiss, though. Don't get the appeal.

As a HUGE Zeppelin and Queen fan:
1. Jimmy's descent into heroin (see 1977 tour of America)
2. Freddie's "Village People" mustache
3. Hot Space
4. Hats off to Roy Harper (arguably the only bad song in Zep's entire catalog)
Heroin is always a big, sad mistake.

Gotta disagree on that mustache, though. It was magnificent.

To further the thought...Paul stated in a RS article that he went into the studio with John after they had "broken up". The recordings were not good, therefore never released. The band were aways friends. (perhaps sometimes with differences) but, they were done as the Beatles. I think breaking up was the smartest move
I've heard a snippet. Really not good at all.

The band had to end, it was becoming too dysfunctional. The bright side is that the Beatles albums will always be good.

Do me the favor of not posting direct insults towards me here, try to keep them in your head until you can deliver them face to face.
That clarity of differentiation you speak of seems to always remain with people who are sure they are always right. :woot:

OK I've now read all 12 pages of this thread and not one person brought up a band that debuted in this century.

The closest was Rage Against the Machine and a request for Britney Spears to pose for Playboy.
Because Talkbass is a bunch of old guys.

I have one, though. Ihsahn deciding to use an 8 string guitar and that his solo music needed alto saxophone.

Laudanum breaking up.

Ludicra breaking up.

People trying to form doom bands without bassists.

At one point Eric Clapton, enamoured of The Band, flew to Woodstock to ask to join. It didn't happen. Discuss.
Good. Clapton sucks without Cream.

irrelevant. the statement was about firing ozzy, without that happening their never would've mob rules or heaven and hell. the fact that it went off course after dio in no way diminishes what that line up created.
Indeed. The real mistake was losing Dio. Twice.

It depends which of their solo albums. I'd say the first two Ozzy albums were better than most of Dio's solo stuff, but that Dio's solo work was better than everything Ozzy did after Diary Of A Madman.

I also disagree on the Dio albums, naturally. For me, the best Sabbath album is Master of Reality, but Heaven and Hell is a close second.
