Born in 1950 before Leo Fender built the first P-basses, my only option would be an Audiovox Bass Fiddle, and of the 100 or so built in the 1930s and 40s, hardly any survive to this day. Only seen in photos.

I had one. My 2nd Black Eagle was a 1977, made when I was a month or two old. I am an idiot and no longer have it; the guy who does have it won't sell it. But I keep asking every few months =0)

I started a similar thread a while ago. I decided that for me, the BYB is not too important. But since I have YA significant birthday coming up, I went out and ordered a nice handmade bass. Seemed like the better choice and was cheaper, too. This is what happens when you are a few years older.
Agreed...I feel the same, a "66 Pbass doesn't really excite me, so I had Kiesel do a custom build for me in June of '17 and I bought a '16 Warwick Custom Shop Masterbult Corvette $$ NT...seems to have done the trick...for now.
I have a '72 Jazz Bass, which is a birth year bass for me. I didn't necessarily buy it because it was my birth year. I got a crazy good deal on it because it had bad paint and terrible aftermarket pickups in it. I had it refinished in Fiesta Red and installed some Duncans and it is a beast. I just wish it wasn't so heavy.

My Pedulla is from 1976/77, so not good enough. With 1974, the choices are not too shabby (but expensive): heavy Fender Precision, Tele and Jazz basses, Gibson Triumph style basses (which look very cool, but rare so expensive, there's an Ibanez copy on Reverb for around 700), Hayman, Rickenbacker 4003's and Fender Mustangs and Musicmaster basses that seem very affordable.
This 1974 Musicmaster on Reverb looks very cute to me, and I think I might like the difference in sound and feel in comparison to my rather hifi Pedulla collection.

Yes sir. Picked up my birth year bass last year. 1973 Fender Jazz.
I was unaware such a thing as birth year basses existed until I saw it mentioned on TB. Raised in the UK it made no sense to buy a birth year made in America so this old Wilson Sapphire fit the bill nicely.
Sure, there'd be something cool about owning a'64 Jazz or Precision. But, I wouldn't be interested unless it was in good condition and I don't think I'd ever be interested enough to be willing to pay for one. I'm very happy with what I've got.
My 90 year old dad, however, still plays the violin my grandfather bought for him when he was 12 (1939). The violin maker who serviced it a few years ago said it was a German made instrument that was built around 1880-1890. Yikes!
