Ha, was typing the same...
Interesting because this Boss is relative cheap.
@Johno Dunn , how loud is it, could you gig with it for 100 people with a loud band ?
I have not gigged with it yet, but it is equally as loud as the SWR 350x/Goliath Jr. 8ohm that I replaced with the Katana. And it is a much easier load in.
As far as losing the CORE and using the Katana alone, the CORE is indispensable for the IE gigs I do. So I’m messing around with the 4cm to see what all I can pull out of the combination!

Has anyone ever found a detailed analysis of the different Main Output Select options?

I've recently started plugging the Core into the input of my Mesa Walkabout Scout, which turns out to be much more sensitive to input overloads than my practice Ampeg PF-350 amp or the Mesa WD-800 leading me to not being able to use "Recording" as the setting as I've had in the other amps.

I've also found the return of the Walkabout to be way more touchy than the returns of the other two amps and picking the correct Main Out Select option has become critical.

Page 44 of this has descriptions but it’s not really anything you couldn’t infer from the name. https://static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/GT-1000CORE_prm_eng02_W.pdf

That is the section dealing with AIRD I believe. And BOSS has occasionally made some additional amps available, which you can upload with the AIRD tool.... They are kind of like IR's, but more than IR. And they supposedly have taken into consideration characteristics of the preamp input of each of those amps, in order to kind of compensate for things that the preamp does to the signal. I'm not sure why they also have FX Return models to use....in theory the FX return should are pretty darn clean line level.

The instrument input on preamps is high impedance for one thing. So you are effectively doing the same thing as when you try to Reamp something. I don't think those AIRD models can actually do anything about the main out not being high impedance compared to what a real bass would be, but maybe they are doing something to make up tonally for what is normally lost by trying to plugin a line level lower impedance device into the front of a guitar amp. Just guessing...

You could try some of those existing models to see if any of them work for you amp close enough, but honestly you should be getting decent results plugging it into the FX return. If not, I don't know what to say, call BOSS about it.

That’s a good idea. I’ve connected the GTCore via USB and been using the reamping feature, so would be easy enough to record some pink noise and reamp it through the unit. I’ve just been turned on to this frequency analyser plugin, so might be worth checking it out.

Yeah, it’s not super informative. I’m curious if the dynamic range is changed along with maybe an EQ curve is applied along with a lower/higher output.

it would be interesting to feed some pink noise through and feed it into a visualizer in a DAW

Thanks for the input on the Headrush FRFR. Most of my gigs are ampless, we all go directly into the board, and monitoring is done via IEMs. For the rare occasions we use amps, I usually go for my GX Fusion 550 with a suitable cab.

So the FRFR would be only for at home use. I have found that dialling sounds thru one of my rigs means a completely different sound through the PA

Thanks for starting the idea. Just reamped some pink noise through the GTCore and into Logic, used the Multimeter Analyzer to see the EQ curves. The pick noise was generated using Logic's Test Oscillator. Interesting stuff. Here's a couple of screen shots. The first is everything turned off, the second is my basic Concert Amp 2x15 patch. It's great to see my patch visualised like this.

Very cool! I feel kind of foolish that I've owned a copy of Logic since I've worked for Apple a thousand years ago and I never realized all this cool stuff was built in!

I'm really curious to try the different Main Output Selects along with the Mastering Effects!

This is kind of similar although I think he’s just playing guitar and observing the eq rather than pink noise so a little less scientific but still handy.

Thought I would drop this here if anyone is interested. Somewhat CORE related, as the combination of the two is filled with possibilities.

Boss Katana 210 review:
I am vey pleased with this purchase.
I replaced an SWR 350x head and Goliath Jr. 8ohm 210 cab with the Katana, and it is easily as loud, and a much easier load in. I first ran the combo with my GT1000 CORE plugged in to the power amp in of the Katana, which bypasses the preamp/fx section of the Katana and gives me the CORE as my preamp and FX. This may be how I run things, as the sound was almost exactly what I was getting from my SWR set up. Plenty of low end, and very punchy. Very true tone with almost no coloration from the Katana cab. Very FRFR. I was running the SWR in a similar fashion, using the FX return and bypassing the preamp.
I then plugged straight in to the Katana, and with some knob turning was able to get a very pleasing tone from the amp itself. The compression in the Katana was very easy to dial in, and could be more fine tuned with the online editor, though I did not feel this was necessary. The drive setting allowed me to dial in just a touch of hair! I used the Vintage preamp setting and dialed the Blend in to taste.
The EQ section is very versatile, as you can customize the Lo mid and High mid EQ points using the Editor, but the settings on board (three for each) worked very well, and I was able to get the tone I was looking for.
The FX on board were a very nice feature and they sounded great. I will probably not use them, as I have everything I need in my CORE. That being said, I could easily do a gig with just the Katana and the available Foot switch, and be perfectly happy.
All in all, I feel this was the right purchase for me. This is a very versatile combo, and could easily replace an amp and pedalboard. The 48lb weight is a little heavier than we are used to these days, but it is a vey easy to carry load, and much lighter than the SWR set up. The on board 160 watts is plenty loud for the gigs I am doing. Mostly Brew pubs with between 100-200 people, and I will definitely be heard over drums, two guitars, sax and a singer in my current band.

That’s good to hear, the demos sound great from what I’ve heard. The weight is a little higher than some alternatives but not bad when you consider it’s an AB class amp. You’re getting a lot for your money!

Well, I’ve gone down a rather deep rabbit hole testing out the effects blocks with pink noise and Logic Pro. Especially the X Bass Compressor, Master FX, EQ, and the AIRD Preamp. Starting to get into the nuts and bolts of this thing. Things like where the EQ centres are, gain staging between Input Level > AIRD Preamp > Output Patch Level, and what the Attack setting does in the compressor. The pink noise makes it a lot easier to see what’s happening.

What's your set up for this? I've recorded and saved a pink noise AIF track which I re-imported into Logic and re-amp through the Core.

I haven't figured out a way to use the Multimeter live, so I need to record a new track of the re-amped output and later run the Multimeter during playback of that track.

That's cumbersome and creates a ton of tracks, so I'm hoping there's a better way, ideally doing it live without the need to record a track.

The Multimeter isn’t real-time, so yeah it only works during playback of the recording. Ive deleted quite a few tracks so far.

I was always a little unclear on what the tone dial does. Might have to have a fiddle with logic and see for myself.

I know that actually doing the work imparts the deepest understanding, but some of us don't have time/ability/gear to do the deep dive... what learnings can you share with the rest of us?
