Boss GT-10B

Just picked up a GT-10b. I currently have a BOSS SE-70 I seem to keep falling back to. I also have a Line6 M9 that I wish I loved. So many pros and cons to multieffects.

I think the GT-10b is a good unit. It's similar to the GT-6b in regards to my overall satisfaction. I do think they improved the compressors, the synth tracks excellent, and the modulation kicks butt as always. But the overdrive/dirt still sounds horrible. Really, it's the worst of the three units by far. I haven't tried using a preamp sim or EQ after yet which is usually necessary on the BOSS drive models based on my experience. But the Line6 really kills it in this regard, the Facial Fuzz and Fuzz Pi models on the M9 sound so much better.

I browsed the GT-10b documentation before and thought there was no modulated delay, so I was happy to see tape and modulated delay models in the GT-10b.

I quickly tried the Floorboard app for loading and writing a few patches from the Yahoo Group repository. Sad to see so little user uploads and sharing of patches. Get a Line6 guitar product and there's seemingly thousands of factory and user patches constantly uploaded and shared. I haven't check out the Boss Librarian but I'm assuming it doesn't connect to some central online repository to make things easy.

Some questions:

* When connected via USB to my computer I get a TON of annoying digital noise through my amp. It's unbearable and really loud. I'm guessing my computer instantly tries to use the GT-10b as it's sound card and I need to disable this, but haven't done so yet. But it's unusable the way it is right now.
* Is there an official BOSS user forum somewhere? I went to the US site and found the "community" but it's a non-user section of the site as far as I could tell. No user forum that I could figure out.
* How do users communicate with Boss regarding suggestions for their products? Line6 seems a bit more touchy-feely with their users. You find agents on these forums often, as well as on their user forums.

Very little action in the GT10B forum, though.

Again, not that much in the 10B section relative to the guitar stuff. FWIW, if you use Gumtown's floorboard software, a lot of the guitar patches will work on the 10B as the software automatically makes substitutions to the individual components of the chain as necessary.

The USB connected Noise (in my experiances) is due to an earth loop created when my laptop used a grounded 3 pin supply, i change the supply to a 2 pin mains plug type and all the noise went away.
The GT-10B is a bit particular to earting, either lack of (need ground wire to GT-10B chassis) or double connected eathing loops from the grounded USB cable and the line socket shield being grounded via the amp.

The GT-10BFxFloorBoard software will load your GT-6B patches and convert them, and also load GT-10 (guitar unit) patches and convert them too.
If you also download the GT-10 version of the software, you can use it to convert GT-8 and GT-Pro patches to GT-10 format, but there is not really much advantage in using downloaded patches, apart from getting the general idea of a patch sound you want. Most shared patches are designed for use with a particular gear/setup, so they never sound right for you.

I have a GT-10, which I originaly got for some guitar work I was doing. Its handy on a gig because I could go straight into the PA and get a decent sound without lugging amplifiers to the venue.

Now I am back playing bass all the time and I am intrigued to know if its worth selling the GT-10 and getting the GT-10b? Looking through the software from Link Removed I can see that The GT-10 has 2 seperate synths inside it. The wave synth is very similar to the one in the GT-10b. However there is another synth, the guitar synth, that looks a lot more like the synth that is in the GT-6b. The GT-10b also has the multiband compressor.

Any suggetions? Has anybody here had access to both and can comment on the pros and cons?

now you might not take my word for it - and I'm not sure you should - but I've heard that the gt10 and gt1b are the same hardware with different firmwares - meaning you could basically give the gt10b the bass firmware and voila - you got yourself a gt10b... not sure about this though.

as for the pros/cons - I'd go to the boss website and see what difference there is

i have both the 10 & 10B, they are mostly the same except...

10B has XLR outputs which are independantly controlled from the line outputs.

10B has more compressor/limiter controls plus the multiband comp.

10B has more channel switching options including frequency divide.

10B has great bass preamp types plus 4 guitar preamp types.

but...

10 has 2 preamps, but are only limited to the channel a/b part of the chain placement.

10 has extra synth effect controls, and has the wave synth and auto riff effects.

when i opened both units, they share the same main board, but with different firmware eproms, and the gt-10 has a board connector for the XLR output sub-board. The most obvious difference (apart from the 10B XLR outputs), is the silver faceplate, where the 10B has the red faceplate, all the internal hardware is the same.
In 'theory' you could replace the gt-10 firmware with the 10B, but this firmware is not publicly available. It would have been great if boss made the units multi purpose so you could switch between 10 & 10B.

If you are using the 10 for bass, check the preamps are suited for your needs, the 10B ones are superb. If the preamps are not an issue, i would stick with the 10. Or wait for the next generation release, which if following the past trends, should be announced at 2011 NAMM in january.

Just did my first gig with the GT-10B. I normally perform with no effects and have done so for a very long time..

This thing killed. Very easy to set up, very easy to use. I'll need to organize my user patches and do the permanent marker mod for the lights (ridiculously bright), otherwise I couldn't have been happier. I used my Brubaker KXB-6 fretless and it was a perfect match. Not sure how many are using fretless with this but the freedom it allows was perfect for the synth patches (tracked flawlessly down to the low B) and everything else. And surprise... the fretless patches sound great with an actual fretless:D. And the fretless can still sound fretted if you play it that way. By varying my attack I varied how much many effects actually affected my sound, very touch sensitive. I took two basses but only used the fretless all night.

I'm still scratching the surface and I think this will become a permanent part of my gig setup. The unit seems to be extremely well thought out and very user and tweaker friendly. I ordered the bag tonight... it's a keeper.

I ran the fretless to the GT-10B to a tiny AER Basic Performer combo out to the FOH. The AER sounded great by itself, through it and the PA I had everyone grinning. Sounded great onstage.

I agree, Brad, the more I use mine, the more I like it - and not only as an "effects" tool, but also as a sound processor. I love the way I can program many bass voices that are fundamentally different from one another, yet all essentially "un-effected". I use a standard, fairly flat patch with a little compression most of the time, and I also have a patch with preamp and EQ that provides a more motown feel, and another one set up for reggae.

Without the GT-10B, each of these would require lots of knob tweaking at the amp. It might not even be possible to get all of these sounds with a single amp or bass, and certainly not possible to do in the two or three seconds I usually have between tunes.

The effects are great too - I find myself selling off a lot of my pedals. And, as an added bonus, there's only one in and one out. Every time my old pedalboard would stop passing signal I had about 20 places to check for a loose connection.

Great tool!

That's a big plus for me too.

I'm doing my best to work through the manual and the GT-10b without using the Floorboard software as a crutch. Simply so I can fully understand everything and be able to program the 10b on the fly away from a computer.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to program the Exp Sw to turn the tuner on and off.

System > Control > arrow right to Exp PEDAL SW SETTING and set to System \ Tuner \ Off \ On \ Toggle

I'd thinkt that should do it, and setting to System should override any patch settings for the Exp Sw.

However, stepping on the switch does nothing. The LED by the pedal doesn't come on, neither does the tuner. If I set it to Reverb, nothing happens either.

The 8 per patch assigns always work well. It's these simple system assigns that I can never seem to get working properly.

Unrelated to my previous post, I've never gotten any of the 10b fuzz effects to sound good. I've spent way too much time on pairing fuzz with preamps and different speakers and eq. They never sound driven enough, and always thin or something. So I've stuck my Line6 M9 in the effects loop and am letting the 10b control it with MIDI patch changes and toggling the FX loop. Seems to be working well. And effectively gives me all of the M9 functionality with the ability to insert it into the 10b effect signal wherever I want.

Originally I was going to trade the M9 towards some analog fuzz boxes and do the same. But this might prove to be even better.

If i am reading this right, you want to assign the tuner on/off to the exp pedal so when you press down on it, it goes to tuner mode. I set my CTL1 button to do tuner functions, seemed easier. I find the pedal to be a little too sensitive and when stepped on it sets it off. When i use the tuner, i use the vol pedal to silence my tuning. Hope that heps a little.
ADDED:

The way i set it up in manual mode: (seems to be easiest for live use)
patch 1-Boost
patch 2-Octave down with mix at 30%
patch 3-funky touch wha
patch 4-a little Flange (reminds me of the o'jays for the love money)
CTL1-Bypass/Tuner
Ctl2-turns on light over drive

So far this has worked great. When we play Sly Stone's Higher, i get to use the octave and the over drive,STAND BACK!!!!!

It sounds like you just need to adjust the sensitivity of the Exp. Pedal Switch. It should be in the System section, IIRC - but it's 6am and I'm just getting home from a gig....so...

If you can't find the pertinent info in the manual, post and I'll figure out how I did it.

I thought using the chosen patch button for bypass/tuner was a pretty slick move. Then use the volume pedal to mute it. That leaves both CTL buttons to do what they do (secondary patch functions).

And pressing any patch button reverts it back to the patch. Sweet IMO.

The more I gig with this the more impressed I am with it. And the bands I'm working with love it.
