Bruno Mars band kicked SB butt.

... Bruno can't hold a candle to James Brown, E,W,& F, Sting, and other influences he tries to draw from.
OF course not -- he is 28 years old. Every group you named has a body of work that is lengthier than his age.

That said, he is one of the few current acts out there that are even trying to draw from those influences. As someone who grew up on the music you mentioned, I have no problem with his show last night -- the kid threw down and we need more acts with that kind of energy, musicianship and respect for the past.

I appreciate that he is drawing those influences and maybe bringing some attention back to those great bands, but his music still seems watered down, IMO. I've seem some local bands recently playing old funk/motown styled stuff that seem to have a deeper groove than he. Each to their own, YMMV, etc.

As far as his age and comparing him to those acts, it is fair game as he is on a national stage now. Plus, if you do the James Brown dance moves on stage, expect to get compared to JB (who IIRC was starting to cook around his mid-late 20s).

I don't keep up on the contempory music scene. So, for me, Bruno Mars was a "breath of fresh air."

With that name (Bruno Mars) I thought the group was some kind of Euro-Electronica crap. Man was I wrong.
I really like the whole vibe the band puts out. Good stuff.
RHCP? What could they do besides the big hit they had back 20 years ago?

Not "really" playing their instruments? WGAS?

That was fun to watch. I will reserve any stronger compliments for a live show, YMMV.

The Mars material I'd heard before last night was smooth, corny loverman stuff like "Marry You", so his halftime show was a refreshing change.

Meh, he's ok. He looked just like a young James Brown complete with skinny tie, pompadour, and groovy footwork. Not sure I would call him a breath of fresh air though, 1965. Any of you guys hear his tunes besides the halftime syncshow? ;)

here here !!! by far the best new act out there.

If we had more hard workin bands like that maybe there would be some hope for good music to continue to flourish, in the pop music category anyway, what I saw at this years grammies was pitful.
