Bruno Mars band kicked SB butt.

The biggest problem with RHCP was that their show didn't belong on the same stage as Bruno Mars. TOTAL mismatch in terms of visuals and musical style.

Mars and his band were wearing shiny sport coats and ties....doing a classic rock/ R&B thing. RHCP jumped onto the stage half bare-assed, and their music and apearance completely screwed up the groove that Mars and his band had going.

I haven't heard a lot of Bruno Mars, but everything I have heard has been beautifully sung, well performed, and showed class and real attention to showmanship, not jumping around with no shirt on. RHCP wwas seriously out-classed.

Pre-recorded or not, Bruno Mars is a hell of a performer. Is he drawing heavily from James Brown, Temptations, etc.? Yes. So what! He performs with and energy and style that is highly entertaining, and is a nice change from the pop diva doing vocal acrobatics. The more I see him, the more I dig what he's doing.

RHCP - Meh.

From a show production stand-point, using pre-recorded material significantly reduces the chance of things going wrong. RHCP are notorious for their sloppy live shows. This isn't a risk worth taking for this kind of a situation. Remember, this is a football game half-time show, not a concert.

I disagree...total opposite acts, but I think the counterbalance was really cool.

I did not like the performance of the ballad that Bruno Mars closed with. I don't too much care for that song, but even that aside the singing fell flat as a closer.

Word is that Bruno invited rhcp personally because he is a fan.

Can you imagine the nightmare it would be to roll out a stage, connect to the mains and mix sound in that environment and not duff it? When sound check was done in an empty stadium at a different temperature? For a ten minute show? Exactly. That's why it is recorded. Sound quality plain and simple.

I thought it was a nice touch to bring the spectacle down to a single performer at the end, as it was at the beginning. And it was one of his hits.
